This is just to keep the internal spread down, they aren't in a position to care about exporting cases.

From what I've read, after about 10 or 11 days, the worst is over and one starts to recover if it hasn't progressed to anything worse.
Everyone is in a state of illogical, instinctual panic right now. Individuals all the way to entire governments are just reflexively pissing down their leg and doing things that will at best not help and, at worst, make things worse.

The risk with the flu is fairly well defined as opposed to COVID which we have limited data on.

Take West Nile Virus, for example. Most people will never show symptoms. Most of those who do have symtoms have a relatively mild disease. But a small number will have very serious disease that may be fatal. When my oldest brother had it, he spent two months in a coma and never really recovered much from it.
It would be an interesting experiment. Give the flu a different name and run hourly stats to see what the public's reaction would be.

The defined flu pattern of 2019 was an average of 1,200 deaths per month if you averaged the year totals by months.
Wash your hands folks and don't go on a cruise. If you are 70 or older, take additional precautions.
