The rest of us would rather use rational thought when we post.

And your obsession with me is creepy. I never mentioned you whatsoever, but you flip out anyway.

I feel the same way about your obsession with me.....

The thing that you don't seem to grasp is what you are doing is actually putting people in harms way by trying to downplay this.

When the thread was started it was just a joke. For years numerous threads like it went absolutely nowhere and the only thing of significance was the first response to OP got a bump in blue stars for posting "user name checks out".

This one took a serious overtone the moment the Chinese locked down a city larger than New York City. People like you have been downplaying it the entire time, no big deal that manufacturing ceased, travel bans were implemented, international borders were closed, people were getting welded into their homes, it spread to additional countries, we saw increasing fatalities and severe illnesses everyday, oil markets tanking, US bond yields at historic lows, stock markets around the world in complete disarray, airlines seeing dramatic drop offs of revenue, sporting events and business meetings canceled around the world and now we have community wide spread within the US.

Whether you believe it or not the danger to the economy and health of the entire globe is real. Corporations, healthcare providers, experts in their field of study, Governments, and organizations around the world with vast resources are sounding warning alarms and taking action, YET you are claiming that you know best, that this is nothing to worry about.....It's all overhyped for political reasons or fear spread by worry mongers who need to be in a bunker.

If I'm wrong and people take my advice and warning of potential danger; the worse case people are stocked up extra food and supplies and might have some additional stress in their lives for a month or two. And i get embarrassed and catch ridicule from the posters on here. Life will go on.

If your wrong (this is as bad as the experts are claiming) and people take your advice and warnings that this is nothing but a joke; in the worst case people will be caught flat footed and unprepared while trying take care of a wife and kids who are in bed for 10 days at home OR worrying about parents fighting for their lives w pneumonia in an ICU unit OR They will be struggling to feed themselves 4 days into a 30 day quarantine. OR they get trapped in a 14 to 21 day quarantine after taking a cruise or a quick cheap trip to Mexico, Etc. In a worst case of you being wrong, life might not go on for some of the people you advised.

Don't worry about the average idiot, trying to protect yourself is essentially free. Putting blinders on and being an imbecile is also free but it has incredible downside.

The problem is, is the average idiot will be the downfall of the people trying to be safe. You only need to be wrong one time for it to be a big ****ing problem

When did I mention you?

I rarely mention someone by name because of the flag-a-trons love to hit the abuse button. Calling someone out by name, unless they're doing something massively over the top, usually gets a deletion and often a day off.

My comments are on the news, or when someone goes insane with something like "1 billion infected!" which even the mods had enough of. I will also call out Twitter crap when it is unverified or when the tweeter clearly has an agenda. I am not the only one who has pointed out that certain people seek out the worst things they can find, and instantly posting it without even looking beyond the tweet.

When this whole thing started, I commented that concern is warranted, but hysteria, panic, and going full on Walking Dead is the worst thing to do.

Now, I'm not going to let this thread get turned into back and forth over my opinions that some just love to go off the rails so let's end this little circular firing squad.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Agreed. General consensus is it's worse than the flu, question is how much worse. News media politicizing this certainly isn't helping. Just like their reporting on politics, there doesn't seem to be a source that simply puts out the facts without them putting a political spin on it.

Sorry but your position and advocacy is not more innocuous. In fact, I'd argue it could be worse than if the virus were to play itself out naturally. Go read about the great depression. Panic and fear can wipe out a country's economy in no time flat. The economy is all about emotion. If people feel hopeful and optimistic, people have jobs, commerce happens, etc. If we allow unnecessary panic and fear to take hold, we might see that type of collapse. And it won't be made up in future spending. It's lost forever.

Guess what also happens? Drugs don't get produced or delivered. Medical care ceases. Food shortages occur. You think thats a better outcome? What kind of mass suffering and death would that cause?

No one believes its a joke. Some of us just think the panic is over the top at this point. Take precautions, yes. Hunkering down in a bunker with 6 months of food and water is probably uncalled for.

My assessment a few pages back
Quote:

Coronavirus is ultimately going to show large corporations how pointless it is to make employees come into huge offices every ****ing day when they realize there is no loss of productivity and actually an increase in productivity while working from home. Commercial office building space could take a hit over the next few years.

I absolutely agree with this. Once companies see that corporate employees are almost as productive as they were in the office, you're going to see waves of them cutting costs from eliminating expensive, prime office space. The era of the big skyscraper full of offices and dehumanizing cubicles will hopefully come to an end.
With Pepsi and Frito-Lay apparently declaring WFH, that will cause peer pressure and a domino effect here in DFW. I fully expect my company will be next at least for "non-essential" jobs. Will be interesting in our case because we keep adding buildings and square footage to our campus with zero thought to WFH policies or even community work space. We are very behind the times when it comes to some things.

My boss is adamantly opposed to WFH and has actually been trying to propose more stringent rules against it. I've argued with him until I'm blue in the face since I have mostly millennials on my teams who expect it. I think he's about to get a lesson in reality. I was already going to ignore his policy anyway, but I'm guessing this is going to scrap his plans with less WFH by the end of it all.

Two thoughts:

1. I love the idea of WFH for the responsible - the issue isn't the idea it's the people who are not responsible. Is that a management issue, maybe? I think it's more of a hiring issue. Frankly, the ones who work well from home also work hard in the office. However, the ones that are wasting time at work literally disappear when at home... so in that sense I need them in the office.

2. Additionally, if WFH is the new trend I'll find it less appealing to hire or retain old people who can't figure out technology on their own. I spend tons of time troubleshooting headsets connecting to online meetings, software glitches that require a page refresh, and if it gets more complicated than that - the world shuts down. If Technology built to speed your over the phone/online meeting sales up, slows you down to a crawl, you may find yourself in the wrong job.

In the end this may usher out the olds who can't adapt and bring in the new.
I agree. On #1, the challenge for most managers is understanding what their employees are actually doing at home if you have a job that doesn't necessarily produce tangible output every day. It gives them angst if they can't physically see folks to at least know they are in the office and "working".

On #2, if we move this way I absolutely need a better application than WebEx. It's what we use at work and it's complete trash and only works about 50% of the time.

Part of the issue surrounding work from home policies is the expectation of the 8 hour workday when that isn't really needed for most jobs. Managers get angst because most review processes are not equipped to handle situations like that. They are setup for more micromanaging and the need for managers to continually check up on subordinates.

It should be this way instead "So long as you get your work done and you never miss deadlines while providing quality work, then do what you want the rest of the day." Companies don't know how to deal with that kind of reality though.
