What is it about a 'shortage' panic always involving toilet paper? Uh oh, virus panic...honey, need to go to Costco and make sure we have 40 rolls of toilet paper in stock at home!

I could probably make a single roll of TP last an entire week at home by simply jumping in the shower right afterwards. Actually I'm pretty sure as long as I had running water, I could survive just fine with minimal inconvenience indefinitely with No toilet paper whatsoever.

I get wanting to stock up on something like prescription meds if you don't want to have to be going out, and maybe some non-perishable food items...but a particular fascination with toilet paper is what you often seem to hear about in the news.

I sympathize with you as my wife is pregnant with our first and it freaks me out to think that this thing has even the smallest chance of hurting her or my unborn child. I mean this with all sincerity, I think it might do you some good to take a break from following this news for a little bit. You seem to be well aware of the steps your family needs to take to minimize your chance of infection, and I don't think following this day by day, hour by hour is going to give you more clarity...it's only going to worry you more.

if it's a pretty severe outbreak, yeah we'll probably be sticking close to home and cooking there. limiting trips to the grocery store and trying to stock up more per run.

I mean I don't want to break out of my comfort zone either, but if it becomes more clear you can get this bug from people making your food for you, then you can decide to avoid that vector.

the name of the game is to stretch out the time it takes for you to get infected and minimize your contacts after you're infected. time is everything.

I keep being told by internet geniuses that this is no worse than the common flu - personally I cannot afford to get irreversible damage to my body. Hopefully in 2-3 weeks they will have more data - either good or bad. Until then I am laying low, and will re-evaluate then. There's too much good and bad information coming out to know what's fact - every government has their own agenda at this point.

It's general good practice at this point to begin limiting your contact with others when you don't have to. Wash your hands extensively and make sure you clean your cell phone.

So in South Korea they have tested 140,000 people for Coronavirus and found ~6,500 cases. Of those 6,500 cases, they have 135 recoveries and 42 deaths so far. Due to their massive testing program, they have to be finding a higher percentage of the cases than elsewhere.

So there the actual death rate is at least 0.6% (6 times higher than flu), but likely higher as the other ~6,300 cases resolve. Recoveries should lag deaths as you die before you would have recovered. As reported elsewhere, most of their deaths are in the older population.

There are only so many to go around and it's going to be that way for a while. Blame the CDC for completely botching this - we should've been at the forefront in testing capacity a month ago, instead South Korea is showing the world how it's done.

Until we have a greater capacity to test there will be very specific criteria for those who are tested and meanwhile this seemingly highly infectious disease will continue to spread in our communities.

Hey, but at least our #s will look good for a while and we can continue to hold our conferences and sporting events for the masses to mingle with a clear conscience.

There are stories from all over the world of people not self-quarantining due to ignorance (didn't know they had it or should have been isolation) or selfishness (ignoring self-quarantine orders) but let's only blame the muslims.

Containment efforts and mass testing is pointless at this point and I think the CDC knows it and is focusing on a management strategy.

Yep, married with several kids and pets, including some teenage daughters. And both my wife and I are amused that the item most likely to be out of stock at the local store when people think civilization is in danger of ending apparently is toilet paper, even though it is relatively easy it is to make a small amount toilet paper last if you are forced to do that. Yet you go to the store, plenty of food on the shelves, but no toilet paper!

Containment and mass testing are part of the management strategy. How is this so hard to understand. Every little bit of friction you put into place to slow the spread of the disease reduces the burden on the medical infrastructure.

Conscript the resources of research labs in universities all over the country, which are largely funded by federal grants anyway, and you have your capacity overnight. The bottleneck is purchasing reagents, for which there are an abundance of suppliers (and supplies on shelves of said labs)

i also understand the recovery criteria is pretty stringent

like people who would clearly be considered recovered if this was the flu are still waiting to be cleared

the tail to completely clear the virus is long, but the mild symptoms dissipate long before that happens (if you have a mild case)

I had this same worry when my wife was pregnant with our first, but it was when Zika was a big thing. Everything was fine and I actually had to look up what it was called because I'd forgotten in the last 3 years. Hopefully this is the same.

you wait for bad outbreaks and manage those, resulting in mass quarantines (rather than contact tracing and more localized social distancing)?

Yeah, I just didn't want anyone to freak out about the 42 deaths vs only 135 recoveries. A 24% death rate would be implied without the extra context.

I've been several pages behind and just caught up. I have determined that we are all either really f^cked or this is nothing. Zero consensus here which doesn't surprise me.

Two other things:
1. My brother's company (Regeneron) has announced they plan to have human testing underway with a drug for prophylaxis and treatment by late summer. They apparently have a lot of experience with SARS and MERS and "tweaking" their existing drugs for this.
2. Before all this started, my wife coincidentally bought a "SoapPhone" which is a product that cleans your phone using ultraviolet. Assume it works. Maybe something to check out.

Let's just not test people so we don't have any #s to report like the rooskies.
