I talked about this with my corps roommate, a doc, for a bit yesterday. He's basing all this off of the fuzzy data available but based on what he sees, this virus seems to frequently cause interstitial viral pneumonia (reportedly 90% of cases end up with this clinical diagnosis). The flu doesn't tend to have this same mechanism, it's more upper respiratory (which is why it generates different symptoms - sneezing, runny nose, sore throat) with pneumonia as a much less common complication.
He said this because COVID19 reportedly presents ~50% of the time (even in minor cases) with ground glass opacities on x-ray of the lungs. This also jives with the highest reported comorbidity being heart disease - higher even than breathing or lung issues - swelling of the lungs vs just a lobe or area of the lungs like in most bacterial pneumonia can put pressure on the heart. As well as reports of testicular swelling, as edema around the lungs or heart can cause anything sensitive to swelling to respond.
No idea if I'm regurgitating this correctly. I'm not a doctor, and for the docs here feel free to correct any of that. I did think it was kind of interesting.

You know the craziest thing is there wasn't really an immediate run on supplies. The day the CDC announced, 'Its coming to the US, we can't stop it' I went to Costco and got some of that stuff. Heard from a family member who is a Physicians assistant in a hospital setting.
Hospital policy is Anyone who treats a patient with a Fever and SPO2 of 90% or lower is pulled off shift until the patient tests negative for COV. If the patient is Confirmed, 2 weeks quarantine.
This could prove to be unsustainable if patients start rolling in with bad flu or COPD.

Can viruses live on surfaces like fabric for more than a day or two? Our merchandise is air freighted from China, so I would say that the viruses are put in a very unhospitable environment.. but if I just google, it says that viruses can live up to 7 days or more on those sorts of materials.. couldn't find anything that would help about method of transfer.
A bleach solution will be much more effective and much faster if your material can tolerate a spray down with 0.5%

Was this before the advent of smartphones? I have spent multiple days in a row totally alone just on accident because I'm in near constant contact with friends/family on my phone and just felt like staying home.
They may be bringing students/faculty and people back from the affected countries...

If some 90 year old woman who never leaves her home and is taken to the hospital with pneumonia, and this is her 5th visit in the past year, it would be highly likely to not be the coronavirus.

What you did correctly was include the virus's assumed (yes, I said assumed because, again, its technically still unknown for sure) transmissability in your determination. What I find weird is that there are so many who are either unaware or consciously choose to ignore that data point.
The other issue is that we cluster our elderly, especially those who are generally less healthy, in nursing homes and senior facilities. It would be quite the strain on those facilities and one would think mortality rates would be higher in those locations.Quote:

I am more interested in that are they so infected and surrounded by the virus that treatment is not helping, or is it a weakened immune system (from work, etc.) that causes death.
You would think they would do everything medically possible to save their lives...

Yep. Ideological conformity requires that they express fear of corona virus and that efforts to deal with it have been inadequate.

That's the 1st I've seen of the claim that it does not transmit as efficiently as the flu. If true, great news. But that is certainly different than everything else I've see to date... so where does the truth lie?

So stuff like this makes me think that there will be a wide differentiation between 1st and 3rd world countries with proper supportive care and antibiotics against secondary infections and those without. I would suspect that similar issues are occuring in Pakistan and India that we don't know about yet as well.
