FFS... this is ridiculous. Arrange for them to home quarantine... its a little late to feign containment. I can't believe this isn't considered illegal detention considering the facts of the matter.
Federal judge just denied the City's application for a TRO. So now the City/ State has to decide if they have authority to extend the quarantine on their own, and if so, how to pay for it.

Twitter is encouraging its more than 4,800 employees around the world to work from home in response to the spread of the coronavirus. It's one of the most drastic steps taken by any tech company so far in response to the outbreak.

Over the last few days, a number of Silicon Valley companies have been coping with the virus's incursion into their workforces. Two Amazon employees based in Italy have contracted the coronavirus, and Facebook has reportedly advised its employees to "feel free" to work from home.

But Twitter went a step further on Tuesday.

"Beginning today, we are strongly encouraging all employees globally to work from home if they're able," the company said in a blog post. "Our goal is to lower the probability of the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus for us and the world around us. We are operating out of an abundance of caution and the utmost dedication to keeping our Tweeps healthy."

Twitter is also requiring its employees based in Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea to work from home, which it said in a blog post that it is mandating "due in part to government restrictions."

And airlines stocks don't move.....

I'd be lucky to find Tajikistan on a map. Somewhere north of Iran in Central Asia is as close as I'll get.

I'm aware of a few "-stan" countries. Tajikistan is not one of them.

I counted between 40-50 bags. The camera is bouncing around a lot.

Iran's official count is 66. Either this video is at the morgue where all of the CV deaths for the entire nation are being stored or their govt is way under reporting the numbers.

4 or 5 years ago the Texas A & M Health Science Center received a ton of funding. They said TAMSC could produce millions of flu vaccines in very short order. I think they are one of 2 or 3 places in the USA that can do that.
I suppose there isn't a vaccine for the Coronavirus yet? I would assume A&M would be a leader in producing the vaccines?

I have to agree

That looks like a typical morgue you would see in any big city on any given day... showing a morgue doesn't prove a single thing about Covid-19 unless your employing scare tactics ...

The biggest delay with a vaccine is testing it to ensure it is safe, and that it works.

IDK maybe they don't want to look bad to the world?
Or maybe they just don't have the communication networks to filter information up to the reporting body. Maybe they are overwhelmed?

Who knows? Doesn't always have to be a grand conspiracy, they could just suck at actual reporting.

I don't really think like a theocratic dictator, at least my station reflects such, but I would assume it has to be something regarding control of the populace. They're definitely boosting their "recovered" numbers.

There is an original article describing the Wuhan clinical characteristics, epidemiology, attack rates etc. Very good and free on their site. The editorial is from Tony Fauci of the NIH. Excellent content. I am a pulmonologist. I remember the H1N1 epidemic 10 years ago. From my standpoint it was awful. ARDS. Our hospital nearly ran out of ventilators. Never seen anything like it and the mortality rate from that virus was lower than COVID-19. I got the infection that year but thankfully survived. Scary stuff.

If one assumes that the number of asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic cases is several times as high as the number of reported cases, the case fatality rate may be considerably less than 1%.

Many posters here are speculating the same thing, a huge underreporting of mild cases, especially in China where reporting symptoms could get your doors welded shut.

We will see how this plays out in South Korea.

Fauci is one of the authors and it cites to the underlying data from studies done in China. It's a lot more credible than most of the stuff on this thread, but I would hope everyone recognizes that it's still early days for studying this.

Do you think the NEJM is going to accept a bogus article for publication in their journal? I was in academics for a while and submitted a very good molecular genetics paper to them for publication re familial IPF and it was summarily rejected. Got it published in the AJRCCM. They have intense standards. The mortality data (1.4%) mirrors other recent publications. I think it's legit.

Other than very humid Singapore and Indonesia, the temperature across italy, s Korea, and china ranges from 40-60 F. I wonder if warm dry air limits COVID growth?
Some viruses that are spread by sneezing ride in tiny water droplets that will, in dry air, evaporate. Such viruses tend to be far more infectious in the winter when the air is cooler and wetter. It is quite possible that this is the same in this case, too.

I've never heard this explanation and have consistently heard the opposite. I think you're confused because the air is definitely drier in winter and more humid in summer. One of the reasons, along with temperature and increased UV, for the seasonality of airborne viruses like the flu is that in humid weather (summer) the drops from a cough or sneeze don't travel as far due to the moisture in the air.

Too bad the warm weather theory was debunked by Mr Infectious.

I missed that. Can you repeat what was said?

The average American spends 90% of their time indoors. The virus is spread via aerosol and surface contact. Meaning offices, schools, grocery stores, movie theaters, hospitals, nursing homes, airports, concerts, sporting events, buses, subways, trains etc. will be the places where it's contracted and spread.

It's not floating around the air outside.

With the R0 somewhere between 3 and 6 warm weather may only reduce the transmission to R0 2 (still above the pandemic level).

Yes, sunlight will boost your body's immunity, use it to your advantage.

Hopefully I am proven to be wrong.....

Thanks for explaining

Respiratory viruses remain more stable/alive ex vivo in cold temperatures. Hence their propensity to transmit more in the winter. Warming thru spring and summer will mitigate this epidemic.

Report on Miami patient:

Quote:

In the case of the Miami woman, she is still confused by what took place. She had spent a week in Northern Italy, just as the virus was spreading across that region.
"There was definitely a sense of doom and dread everywhere," she said
On Wednesday, February 26, afraid of being trapped in Italy, she flew home, stopping over in Madrid, before boarding an Iberian Airlines flight to Miami. She landed at Miami International Airport around 9 pm Wednesday.
"I started feeling a little bit sick leaving Italy on Wednesday morning," she said. "I was having a rather, severe sore throat and a headache and mild cough."
She said she was surprised there were no health officials meeting the plane to check on passengers. "There were no screenings at Madrid and there was there was no screening when I arrived in Miami," she recalled.
Quote:

The woman shared with CBS Miami copies of her test results from Jackson showing she tested positive for earlier strains of the virus coronavirus 229E and NL63.
She said her doctor told her that based on the results of her tests, the fact that she had been in Northern Italy during the outbreak of the virus, along with her symptoms, he felt confident she was positive for COVID-19. But they couldn't answer that question definitively without a test conducted by the CDC in Atlanta.
"I was just very confused," she said.
One of the reasons why they wouldn't do the test, the woman said, was that she was not considered in a high-risk category because she is in her 30s and otherwise healthy.
She said her doctor at Jackson, however, was still angry he couldn't get her samples tested
"The doctor said that there was basically nothing he could do," she said. "He was quite frustrated."
Instead, of leaving with answers she was sent home and told to stay in her house for 14 days.
The Miami woman tested positive for two different strains of coronavirus commonly found in humans. But she was not tested for COVID-19. Her husband is now sick also.

So, we are getting questions.. I'm curious to hear what the actual answers are...

Can viruses live on surfaces like fabric for more than a day or two? Our merchandise is air freighted from China, so I would say that the viruses are put in a very unhospitable environment.. but if I just google, it says that viruses can live up to 7 days or more on those sorts of materials.. couldn't find anything that would help about method of transfer.
