Considering the WHO was repeating constant Chinese propaganda for weeks? Why would we trust them, ever? I don't even trust the CDC on this.

I 100% trust the WHO to accept the Chinese numbers without question.

Take that for what it's worth.

They are also accepting Iran's claim of 150+ recovered. Do you trust that number? For reference, that's double South Korean recovered in 1/4 the time.

Is the San Antonio incident indicative of an unreliable virus test or that we still don't understand the incubation period? Tested clean, but...........

The real problem for China:

what happens when you let everyone out but there isn't a cure, vaccine or an effective way to contain it? Wash, rinse, repeat????

Have a trip to Vegas planned in a few weeks. I'm assuming this thing is going to be so blown up by then that my wife is not going to let that happen. Vegas is probably the worst place to be right now.

I'm not going to freak out about this thing when no one on my family is high risk, but I definitely wouldn't take a trip to Vegas. That's just asking for trouble, and will probably be right around the time this thing is really hitting the US hard. I would expect Vegas to be on the leading edge of infections with all the Asian tourists. Be surprised if there's not already quite a bit of cornavirus floating around the strip.

Almost certainly unreliable test. The report yesterday suggested that the positive result was on a sample that has been retained from the subject. She did not come back for a new test after realease.

I was just using CRISPR as a placeholder for gene modification research in China because it is a case we know as factual and already occurred.

wasn't something about ACE2 mentioned early on in that smokers were more susceptible? If so, smoking is not as prevalent here as it once was. It might hit the boomers and greatest generation the hardest. Perhaps all the potheads as well.

Does vaping have any effect on ACE2?

Maybe, but don't know. ACE2 is a cell receptor that is used by coronaviruses as an entry point. A quick search finds a few articles suggesting increased expression of ACE2 in smokers and former smokers, but I don't know if that's well vetted or related to propensity for infection.

More likely, I'd guess that severity in smokers would be related to respiratory compromise in general.

Not from a news source but there's a preliminary case in DFW (Ft. Worth, specifically). Tested positive with local test kit, samples sent to CDC for CDC confirmation.

I begin to wonder if it is possible the test kits are throwing false positives due to the that the genius it belongs also contains viruses that cause the common cold?

BTW all of China except Hubei is back to work right now.

There are rumors that the virus was supposedly originated from Africa because Wuhan had a military expo. I've not come across any evidence to disprove it but I do remain doubtful.

Oh and if you play any Chinese video games... I think the government is 'requesting' them to give a few more promotions then usual, I've been hit with a deluge of "free" stuff from one of the games I've played starting with the quarantine dates... Bread and circuses

Until we have more data it's hard to know, right? Most of the data we've collected is tainted and/or unreliable.

So because of the San Antonio case - the people that have been quarantined at Lackland for last 14 days are not being allowed to leave. They were packed up and ready to go - busses ready to take them and now they are not getting much info and busses have gone away empty. Folks talking to lawyers about unlawful confinement.

Or you know we're trying to prevent another serious illness from becoming another seasonal flu? I would much rather deal with only the flu instead of multiple serious respiratory illnesses every damn year. If this means we have to do things we normally wouldn't do for the flu then so be it.
