Two presumed cases in the Tampa Bay, Florida area.

One traveled to Italy, the other they haven't said if the person has been out of the country, except to say they have not been to a country with travel bans/restrictions.

https://www.wfla.com/news/breaking-news/2-people-presumptively-tested-positive-for-coronavirus-in-manatee-hillsborough-co/

I'm going to bet that in the end, other than Seattle, most cases in the US will be traced to Italy and a few to Iran.

I live in Midland, and know a girl coming back from a week long vacation to Italy. Luckily I don't work with her, and I'll be dang sure I don't cross paths with her or her friends for a while.

This one? I am in Long Beach on business, and apparently a big shipping conference that was supposed to start tomorrow was canceled.

LONG BEACH A trade conference for the cargo shipping industry, set to open Sunday at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Long Beach with more than 2,000 participants, has been canceled amid continued concerns about the novel coronavirus, known as COVID-19, organizers said.
" In light of growing concerns around COVID-19, we've made the difficult decision to cancel #TPM20 and #ElDorado20 this year, officials with the Journal of Commerce, which sponsors the event, posted on Twitter late Saturday.
IHS Markit, which publishes the New York-based trade publication, further said in a statement on its website that it "has an absolute commitment to the health and safety of our customers, partners and colleagues. Given the deteriorating situation regarding the spread of the COVID-19 disease, unfortunately it is necessary to cancel TPM20 scheduled for March 1-4, 2020.
"This decision was made following recent guidance from health officials and in light of the rapid growth in global cases of COVID-19, in particular in the Western United States over the past 24 hours, as well as increasing travel restrictions and other circumstances."

I think that recovery number is probably the slug of cases in China. If you looked at recovery vs new cases outside of China only it wouldn't be that way.

It's all there in that worldometers link. But business forum is talking about China data which I threw out about a month ago.

CV19 has been making the rounds undetected in WA for six weeks, so there is no reason to think that the same thing has not been occurring in population centers across the US. I will be surprised if hundreds of cases aren't found in every major city.

The question is how long it will take to move from panic, travel bans, and widespread shut downs of schools and offices to acceptance that this illness can't be contained so we're just going to have to go back to life as normal (with more frequent hand washing).

Houston Rodeo is gonna have some hard choices to make. Different than a baseball or basketball game - it's 3 weeks straight of people in crowded close quarters and they are from all over. Haven't seen what BBQ attendance was but according to friends that had cook teams - still very busy but did look like less folks. Attendance is sure to take a hit.

No one really knows.

Some people have gotten sick again after being declared cured, or at least tested negative, which means either they caught it a second time, or else they had enough of the virus left that it decided to rear its ugly head again. There are viruses which can come back weeks later, Ebola being the most notorious. There was a British doctor who got it in Africa, was medivaced to Britian, declared cured, and came down with it 2 more times.

Some viruses take a long time to completely clear the body. To use Ebola again as an example, it can hide for weeks or longer in random places like the eyes, testicles, and joints. Most people it doesn't cause symptoms again, but some it does.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Seems highly likely and logical.

Coronavirus: Japan confirms first case of person being reinfected with COVID-19

Officials in Osaka confirmed that a woman who works as a tour bus guide had tested positive for COVID-19 for the second time, further heightening concerns about the spread of the infection in the country.

It came as other nations stepped up measures in response to the outbreak, with Iran banning Chinese citizens from entering the country after it confirmed it had 245 confirmed cases of the coronavirus - and 26 deaths.

There are now 189 confirmed cases of the flu-like illness in Japan, excluding the 639 on the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was docked for two weeks at Yokohama, and a third death was reported on Wednesday.

While there have been a number of cases of reinfection in China, notably in Wuhan province where the coronavirus outbreak originated late last year, second positive tests have not been reported elsewhere in the world.

The woman in Osaka, western Japan, who is in her 40s, tested positive on Wednesday after developing a sore throat and chest pains.

CDC: San Antonio patient released from quarantine tests positive for coronavirus

(KWTX) The mayor of San Antonio said Sunday the city will hold the Centers for Disease Control accountable after the CDC announced an individual released from quarantine at a San Antonio healthcare facility tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
KENS, the CBS affiliate in San Antonio, reports the individual was released on Saturday and had contact with others.

The individual returned to isolation after a pending lab test came back positive for the novel coronavirus.

KENS reports the patient was being treated in isolation after returning to the U.S. on a State Department chartered flight from Wuhan, China.

The CDC said the patient met its requirements for release: they were asymptomatic, and consecutive sets of tests taken more than 24 hours apart came back negative.
The CDC said it decided to bring the individual back into isolation out of an abundance of caution.
KENS reports local public health agencies are working to track down those who came into contact with the individual.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg questioned the CDC's practices.
"The fact that the CDC allowed the public to be exposed to a patient with a positive COVID-19 reading is unacceptable," Nirenberg said. "We will hold the CDC accountable."

I really don't think they were reinfected. It's more likely their nasal swabs were coming back negative but they had some amount of viral load still within them. At some point post-clearing, the viral load increased to a detectable level again.

The other possibility is everyone seems to be struggling with accuracy of their test kits still. It could be as simple as that.

I'd put reinfection at a distant third on the likelihood scale.

So what you are saying is that according to our protocols that determine infection, they were negative...as in not infected...BUT then for some reason, later "post- clearing," the "viral load increased to detectable levels again?.....as in, according to our testing protocols they were reinfected?

I am going to need you to "clear" up some confusion here. I mean is a patient with a viral infection every really "clear?" What viral load actually determines infection?

Seems silly to parse hairs over this viral level of infection..."clearly" they were not uninfected or the tests are bunk.

Thridly, we are talking about an RNA virus with a packaging mechanism similar to HIV....

So are all big gatherings going to be canceled for the next few months. There aren't even 100 cases in the US of 350 million. I think canceling events is premature and the risk is still extremely low. Maybe not a month from now, but it's still early and most cases are still associated with overseas travelers.

The problem is all indications are that you can be carrying for several days, if not weeks, without showing any symptoms. Also, not everyone will get tested for it if they do show symptoms, as it seems the severity for young, healthy people is not that bad. Even though there are only 86 confirmed cases in the US today, the reality is that there are likely several times that who are actually infected by now, many of whom are unaware and spreading it to others.
