Daughters big work conference in California was just cancelled. Folks from across country were going.
https://www.presstelegram.com/2020/03/01/coronavirus-concerns-large-cargo-shipping-industry-conference-in-long-beach-is-canceled/

This one? I am in Long Beach on business, and apparently a big shipping conference that was supposed to start tomorrow was canceled.

LONG BEACH A trade conference for the cargo shipping industry, set to open Sunday at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Long Beach with more than 2,000 participants, has been canceled amid continued concerns about the novel coronavirus, known as COVID-19, organizers said.
" In light of growing concerns around COVID-19, we've made the difficult decision to cancel #TPM20 and #ElDorado20 this year, officials with the Journal of Commerce, which sponsors the event, posted on Twitter late Saturday.
IHS Markit, which publishes the New York-based trade publication, further said in a statement on its website that it "has an absolute commitment to the health and safety of our customers, partners and colleagues. Given the deteriorating situation regarding the spread of the COVID-19 disease, unfortunately it is necessary to cancel TPM20 scheduled for March 1-4, 2020.
"This decision was made following recent guidance from health officials and in light of the rapid growth in global cases of COVID-19, in particular in the Western United States over the past 24 hours, as well as increasing travel restrictions and other circumstances."
I live in the LBC...I jetisoned to my second home in Palm springs this morning. brought my workout equipment and extra toilet paper. Made a stop at the supermarket when I arrived. Enough protein and fruits, nuts and berries...and booze to keep me going for two weeks no problem. I can hunker down here since I wfh.

Pope cancelled more events...

Quote:

(AP) A coughing Pope Francis told pilgrims gathered for the traditional Sunday blessing that he is canceling his participation at a week-long spiritual retreat in the Roman countryside because of a cold. It is the first time in his seven-year papacy that he has missed the spiritual exercises that he initiated early in his pontificate to mark the start of each Lenten season. The 83-year-old pontiff, who lost part of a lung to a respiratory illness as a young man, has canceled several official engagements this week as he battled an apparent cold. His weekly appearance Sunday to pilgrims from a window high above St. Peter's Square was the first time he has been seen publicly since Ash Wednesday, when he was seen coughing and blowing his nose during Mass.

It's really interesting to see the bravado of some. I'm sure there are monetary reasons behind it.

This is a big deal and everyone would be wise to avoid large gatherings. Follow hand washing protocol and wear masks until more us known about domestic spread.

Literally every WHO including the US Surgeon General has advised against wearing masks. Some have said it increases potential for infection.

They only say that because they do not want the shortage to affect medical personnel.
No scientific reason why masks would not be beneficial.

They know American buying power...

I honestly believe that every public official that has made this statement has been directed by superiors.

Why the **** would they care if people buy masks...they don't give a **** about gloves or other PPE.

Up until very recently, Indonesia was not testing. The US and neighboring countries have been putting pressure on them.

A diagnosed case in Singapore recently spent some time in Batam (island just across the strait). It's going to be significantly harder to contain in Singapore if/when the virus is running amok in Indo.

They are shedding infectious just like Iran and Italy. Three just confirmed in Singapore w/ recent travel from Indonesia. Brings the total to seven.

Will find the article, but look for Indonesia to "explode" in the same manner as the other two.

Three people in Singapore latest to test positive for COVID-19 after visiting Indonesia

Three people, two Singaporean citizens and one Myanmar national, have tested positive for the novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19, after visiting Batam, Riau Islands, Singapore's Ministry of Health has announced.

Mask are mostly protective for others around you so when YOU cough the droplets are better contained.

Do get me wrong, it helps to protect you but it is really is helpful keeping the virus radius of influence down.

The three cases bring the number of COVID-19 patients who tested positive after visiting Indonesia to seven.

The three people, identified only as Case 101, Case 103 and Case 104, visited Batam together from Feb. 21 to Feb. 23, and are part of a cluster of COVID-19 cases linked to Wizlearn Technologies Pte Ltd, a Singaporean software company.

The Ministry of Health's website announced that Case 101, a 61-year-old male Singaporean citizen, tested positive for the disease on Saturday.

Case 103, a 37-year-old Singaporean woman, and Case 104, a 25-year-old Burmese woman, were announced as confirmed cases on Sunday. Case 103 is a colleague of Case 101, while Case 104 is a domestic worker employed by Case 103.

The two women had close contact with a previously confirmed case, a 38-year-old male Singaporean identified as Case 93. Case 93 is a relative of Case 103 and tested positive for the disease on Feb. 26. The ministry's website said that he did not have any recent international travel history.

Cases 103 and 104 had been under home quarantine since Case 93 tested positive. On Feb. 29, both reported that they previously experienced COVID-19 symptoms.

The number of cases is gonna spike dramatically because they are ramping up testing -10K a week. But come end of March if 98-99% of those folks are still walking around and not showing up on random internet videos passing out (see China) people will start resuming normal activities.

My biggest concern about this whole thing is the high amount of severe cases from the people who end up with covid-19. It seems like around 20% of patients are exhibiting severe symptoms, and if this thing blows out of control in the US, not an impossibility considering how transmissible this thing seems to be, there is going to be a huge strain put on our hospitals.

I've seen some people estimating 5-10% for critical cases, which to me translates to patients that need ICU level care. Assuming a large percent of these critical cases are patients who need to be intubated for ventilator support, that's going to be very concerning if we start to reach China level of infections (especially if you believe the number of infections in China are far larger than reported). I've also seen some studies reference very severe cases requiring ECMO, which is a last resort type treatment for ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome) that is limited to large urban hospitals and/or academic medical centers. Hospitals simply don't have the the capacity to treat that many severe cases if the numbers get out of control, especially accounting for all medical problems people need to be in the hospital for unrelated to covid-19.

For, that is by far the biggest concern I have about covid-19 and I really don't trust that hospitals and public health organizations like the CDC, WHO, and local health authorities have a good plan for this.

Oh forgot to update on my trip to Costco (Cypress). I don't actually go that often and had the opportunity to go today. The seemed well stocked for a Sunday except for bottles water. Every car that went past seemed to have 2+ cases of bottled water. One guy had a flat bed full. I looked at my sister and asked if I missed something saying we needed bottled water. We never could figure out why ppl were buying such large quantities. She bought a case as she normally doesn't keep bottled water, normally reusable bottles.

I got a few things as did she. We joked we were stocking up for the apocalypse.

I keep a fairly stocked pantry and freezer. Outside of of "normal" food, just got peanut butter and albacore canned tuba for food stuffs. Got a bottle of Tylenol, because I was low and vitamin C gummies.

Aside from the stripping the shelves of bottled water, everything seemed normal.

You do realize that you both can be right? There are certain products that are going out BUT that doesn't mean everything is back to 100% normal everywhere......

The poultry industry is critical to the survival of China right now. Not only to feed itself but for the cash flow from exports. From what you've said, I'm assuming that your poultry is shipping to the US and/or around the world. From what I know about raising my own chickens, it's a process that needs constant attention, you can't just shut it down and walk away for a couple weeks. Whereas consumer electronics and automotive parts manufacturing you can.

I've got a friend who runs a restaurant supply distribution company (Paper and plastic products). She was told by her main supplier that all of her products coming from China will be delayed until mid-April. Her supplier has five large warehouse around the US with the vast majority of products from China. They are going to furlough all of the warehouse staff starting mid-March.

From your data point everything is fine, from Scots and mine things are different.
