The Chinese own more real estate in Vancouver than the Canadians.

That's my point, why no massive outbreak?
Are they testing for it?Exsurge Domine said:Mr.Infectious said:

Good question. We may end up seeing average human life expectancy shrink back to 50 years or so.
VaultingChemist said:That is not the right way of looking at it. The high percentage of those infected requiring hospitalization is the biggest concern. Once the healthcare systems are swamped, people will start dying from minor health problems unrelated to COVID-19.thirdcoast said:
I don't think COVID is something any healthy person should worry about being physically impacted by any more than the flu. It's more the reaction and fact that with such mild symptoms it's likely infected and spreading wider than reported confirmations. Prob a lot of people who have it but it passes thru them like the common cold and causes no reason to go to doctor.
Less than 5% of those who were infected with poliomyelitis had severe symptoms, and less than 0.5% died, but the long-term care required to treat those was tremendous.

Since this a respiratory illness, makes you wonder how much (if any) correlation there is between air quality the numbers coming out of China

What's the theory on why the US is telling the public not to buy masks?
N95 masks are sold out everywhere. There are some sellers on Amazon, last I checked, price-gouging the **** out of what is available.Moxley said:claym711 said:

Because most of the masks you can buy won't trap the virus. They may offer some protection from virus particles trapped in droplets, but the virus itself can flow right through the mask or around the sides.
The masks needed for healthcare workers are going to be N95 rated masks, which are thicker and more expensive, and also require the correct fit to work properly. Healthcare workers have to go through fit testing and training to wear these masks. Yhey are also expensive and harder to get. They don't want the general public buying up these masks and having hospitals/clinics running short.

Of course this is what Washington is worried about.
They should be more focused on more pressing concerns.
No you see racism is more a more egregious sin than even murder, we must always consider it the most pressing thing I all situations. This is why you should go and hug every Asian you see to make them few welcome.
It isn't stigma. It's just a fact. Chinese New Year was recently celebrated which means lots of travel between the US and China.
I'm still questioning the Vancouver thing, I would have though Vancouver would be a hot zone.
Eh, roughly half of people who get seasonal flu go to the doctor. Even if we say the severity of this is like the flu (since everyone is hellbent on using flu as the benchmark) then half of the people who get this will go see a doc. Probably because they'll have a fever higher than 102, or a fever that lasts more than 2 days.Quote:
High percentage of those infected? There is a difference between known infected and infected.
You dont know how many are infected. Is it 10% detected 80% or 1%. There is no sophisticated testing and won't be for at least weeks and mass produced kits for months. People with mild cold symptoms don't go to hospital, especially if their antibodies effectively clear the illness within couple days.
I don't think the hospital beds will take anymore patients than the flu, not anywhere close. That's not to say there won't be a bigger panic and more negative economic impact thru March and April maybe till end of summer. Things will either return to normal by then, or we will be moving towards walking dead type hysteria.
I saw that statement. Contradictory, no?JJMt said:They supposedly do little to keep you from getting infected, and the panic buying is making them hard to get for those who need them.claym711 said:

When it comes to surgical/cloth type masks, they much more useful to be given to patients who are showing symptoms of any respiratory illness to keep them from shooting out droplets if they cough/sneeze.deddog said:I saw that statement. It's not going to help you so don't buy them.
But our health care workers need them?

I don't know why you think it's mild cold symptoms. That's not the same as the flu, that's less than the flu. What have you seen that suggests this is less than the flu? Every indication points to worse.
