This is kind of a brain dump, so I apologize in advance if this is out of the blue...

But given the nature of this virus, and considering the idea that this could become seasonal... would a cumulative effect of damage on target areas (heart, kidneys, lungs) be a reason for concern if this happens year after year?

Talked with my sister who decided she'd go try to clean out one of the HEBs in College Station.

It's not been wiped out yet, but the buying of bottled water, toilet paper, canned foods, and various other long term items, plus every kind of cleaner, soap, and hand cleaner is definitely picking up in B/CS. She said nothing was completely sold out, yet, but the shelves were a lot more empty than normal, even more so that what one would see when just before the fall semester begins.

I assume she probably drove an 18-wheeler to the store and filled it up; knowing how she responds to stuff and everything is a disaster on the level of a full scale nuclear war.

I'm no fan of NBC News, but it does debunk some of the crap floating around about the Kung Flu.

It's more the reaction and fact that with such mild symptoms it's likely infected and spreading wider than reported confirmations. That is not the right way of looking at it. The high percentage of those infected requiring hospitalization is the biggest concern. Once the healthcare systems are swamped, people will start dying from minor health problems unrelated to COVID-19.

Less than 5% of those who were infected with poliomyelitis had severe symptoms, and less than 0.5% died, but the long-term care required to treat those was tremendous.

You dont know how many are infected. Is it 10% detected 80% or 1%. There is no sophisticated testing and won't be for at least weeks and mass produced kits for months. People with mild cold symptoms don't go to hospital, especially if their antibodies effectively clear the illness within couple days.

I don't think the hospital beds will take anymore patients than the flu, not anywhere close. That's not to say there won't be a bigger panic and more negative economic impact thru March and April maybe till end of summer. Things will either return to normal by then, or we will be moving towards walking dead type hysteria.

Since this a respiratory illness, makes you wonder how much (if any) correlation there is between air quality the numbers coming out of China

I would think constant exposure to poor air quality would have a very negative effect on your immune system... so it can't help.

My guess is yes. I would wager a ton of people in China have chronic respiratory disease from long-term exposure to air pollutants. This may explain in part why children don't seem to be quite as affected as adults. Interesting in the study posted that they are finding ground glass opacities in CTs of a lot of people affected by the disease. Ground glass opacities are pretty nonspecific and could mean chronic disease but also acute processes. Curious if this is a chicken/egg scenario in some of these people.

N95 masks are sold out everywhere. There are some sellers on Amazon, last I checked, price-gouging the **** out of what is available.

Eh, roughly half of people who get seasonal flu go to the doctor. Even if we say the severity of this is like the flu (since everyone is hellbent on using flu as the benchmark) then half of the people who get this will go see a doc. Probably because they'll have a fever higher than 102, or a fever that lasts more than 2 days.

I don't know why you think it's mild cold symptoms. That's not the same as the flu, that's less than the flu. What have you seen that suggests this is less than the flu? Every indication points to worse.

I got n95 masks and supplies a couple of weeks ago 'just in case', while most here were telling everyone it was a nothing burger. Maybe, and hopefully it will be.

When it comes to surgical/cloth type masks, they much more useful to be given to patients who are showing symptoms of any respiratory illness to keep them from shooting out droplets if they cough/sneeze.

Flu illness symptoms have a spectrum. In fact you can get flu and not even get a fever. Do you think those guys order a home flu kit them call into to report they were positive, but didn't go to doctor. How do you even come up with a stat that half of flu people didn't go to doctor? How many people even confirm they got flu without visiting doctor?? We know even less about corona virus in that regard. That's my only point. The CV numbers will go up, but death and real threat to health won't reach flu levels. That's why economy will recover when deaths stay in thousands as it is contained.

I have no problem deferring the masks to health care workers. They're the front line. Protect them so they can fight.
