I'd bet it's already rampant and we're about to start seeing it now that testing is going to expand. The next two weeks may be problematic.

Have no idea about the reputation of this site. Just googled the town and went to "news" and this was available

That's the same city that the WA patient just died in.

It described the dead patient as a man, but I thought the reports earlier said it was the woman that came from SK on Sunday.
The initial theory is that it was the woman from SK because the only other case mentioned was the high school student. For whatever reason, the WA officials didn't mention other cases last night, but they clearly knew there were some likely ones.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

I just watched the Washington press conference. It was not the female that traveled to SK. She is resting at home. It was a male with underlying conditions that presented with respiratory issues so they tested him. Sadly he passed. I watched the presser on YouTube. I'm sure you can find it. They covered all the cases staying within HIPPA rules of course.

Press release on victim

King County Covid19

Quote:

Public Health Seattle & King County, Washington State Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are reporting three presumptive positive cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), including one person who died. This brings the total of presumptive positive cases in King County to four.
  • Two of the confirmed cases are associated with LifeCare nursing facility in Kirkland, King County, Washington:
    • One is a health care worker from LifeCare. She is a woman in her 40s, is currently in satisfactory condition at Overlake Hospital, and she has no known travel outside the United States.
    • The second case, a woman in her 70's, is a resident at LifeCare and is in serious condition at EvergreenHealth Hospital.
  • In addition, over 50 individuals associated with LifeCare are reportedly ill with respiratory symptoms or hospitalized with pneumonia or other respiratory conditions of unknown cause and are being tested for COVID-19. Additional positive cases are expected.
  • The death occurred in a patient at EvergreenHealth Hospital but was not a resident of the long-term care facility.

Oh crap.

I don't think COVID is something any healthy person should worry about being physically impacted by any more than the flu. It's more the reaction and fact that with such mild symptoms it's likely infected and spreading wider than reported confirmations. Prob a lot of people who have it but it passes thru them like the common cold and causes no reason to go to doctor.

It would be better to say that "probably thousands of people will get infected and at least hundreds will die before a vaccine is approved and deployed to contain the virus and make it similar to common flu".

Instead you have politicizing on both sides. If Trump says Russia didn't impact election, then the entire media will convince public that a $100K expenditure on social media by Russia stole the election. They will play the same game with the virus and it's relatively small mortality rate.

The Trump administration's CDC screwed up. Bad testing kits, an extremely low rate of tests is not revisionist history. Its an absolute fact deranged individuals wish to deny just to show their unconditional devotion to their dear leader.
I put most of the blame on the Democrats. If they weren't actively trying to cripple Trump's administration with spying, impeachment, Russia hoax, etc., Trump and his administration could have have spent more time on addressing this coronavirus health issue.
Every Republican giving interviews should be saying this. President Trump was not surprised by this and has been monitoring it and making preparations since December. The fact that the Democrats are just now getting concerned about it is telling. Maybe if they weren't so obsessed with all their fake scandals and trying to figure out how to count votes they would have had time to be aware and better understand it while the Trump administration was working diligently to get this country ready as best they could.

Just another example of failed, inept Democrat leadership. On the other hand, do they offer any other kind?

That is not the right way of looking at it. The high percentage of those infected requiring hospitalization is the biggest concern. Once the healthcare systems are swamped, people will start dying from minor health problems unrelated to COVID-19.

Less than 5% of those who were infected with poliomyelitis had severe symptoms, and less than 0.5% died, but the long-term care required to treat those was tremendous.

It is more likely the patient wasn't fully recovered, and the virus surfaced again.

Why is this turning into a "you had one job ... moment with the CDC?

Is this based in reality or media sensationalism? I don't know ...

Seems like this exact scenario should be on Page 1 Section A of the playbook. How TF is it possible that theres any question what to do?

This reminds me of FEMA somehow botching a hurricane response. At this point every possible scenario should be accounted for ... no?

The F-up with the test, IMO, is 100% attributable to corruption in some form. The right people weren't gonna get paid so they jacked around with the test until someone could profit ... guaranteed. Thats the way government works.

I don't think we will ever know how rampant it is as many young people will just dismiss it as a bug. Anyone who has kids is getting a cold every few weeks as it is

If this is reported popping up in most states by Wed, I expect loads of people with slight discomfort and a hiccup to start flooding medical offices and demanding tests. Don't underestimate a mama bear hysteria with parents of small children. No amount of demographics and statistics are going to convince many mothers that there kid isn't dying from bad Mexican beer

Ok, I am a relatively healthy 48 year old with treated high blood pressure. My wife is a relatively healthy 48 year old with treated high blood pressure. (She is as mean as a snake so I doubt any virus would mess with her). My concern is for my 11 year old. He is a super healthy kid in athletics, but he has horrible asthma. He takes three different inhalers just to run a mile. (With the inhalers he is able to do anything that is asked of him as far as exercise)

Should we be worried about him? Is this an underlying condition?

Thanks and Gig'em.

2 of my kids have asthma. As I understand it, as long as they maintain their control meds, they should be fine.

You should practice good hygiene, drill that into your kid, and not panic. The stats would suggest that young children are not being heavily affected, but I haven't read anything that breaks down detailed enough to consider medical history within age cohorts.

It is may not be that they're catching it a second time, but rather the virus was still in their body and came roaring back. Other viruses are known to do this, Ebola being the most notorious.

Why do you compare it to the flu? It's not the flu. It's not the same family as the flu. The commonality with the flu is that it is a viral infection so they both cause fever. That's about it.

In this study in the NEJM of 1099 patients the median was 47 years. 5% were admitted to the ICU, 2.3% were ventilated, 1.4% died.

56% had ground-glass opacity on a chest x-ray, 52% had patchy shadowing (signs of pneumonia or damage to alveoli).

Most common symptom was fever, followed by cough, then a small amount had nausea or vomiting and diarrhea. According to the paper this is a difference in viral tropism (i.e., which cells the virus infects) from SARS, MERS, and seasonal flu.

Roughly 18% of cases were classified as severe. Older people were more like to have a severe case (median was 54 years for severe vs 47 overall).

91% were diagnosed with pneumonia including 89.5% of nonsevere cases.

41% required supplemental oxygen including 35% of nonsevere cases.

93.6% of cases were hospitalized, with a median length of stay at the hospital of 12 days, mean 12.8.

They note their 1.4% case fatality rate was lower than recently reported, due to difference in sample size or case inclusion criteria. They also note that at the data cutoff many patients were still in the hospital. On the other hand, mild and home cases wouldn't have been included, so this may represent the more severe end of the disease. And, because of the epidemic they weren't checking for bacterial or fungal pneumonia so they may have had some misdiagnosis.

Here's some information on the flu in the US in 2017-2018.

Only 1.8% of estimated flu cases resulted in hospitalization, and 0.14% resulted in death. 9% of 65+ yrs are hospitalized.

In the NEJM paper they also put together a nice summary of SARS 2 (this round), SARS, MERS, and seasonal flu.

Median incubation is 4 days for COVID19, 2 days for flu. Also what jumps out is time of onset of symptoms to death is 15 days.

I think this is something that looks like it physically impacts more than the flu. It seems to be more severe and last longer.

I get it. I'm concerned about my girls as well. The good news is that the kids are already on a med to control inflammation... so even though they are compromised, the meds are focused on the area that is scary. Drill in hygeine, honor any quarantine advisory and things should be OK.
