I am so glad that the President had a "formal" press conference today on both Corona virus and the Taliban peace deal. It just reminds me that characterizing the "Press" as "enemy of the people" and "fake news" is 100% right. I can't decide if career political *****s or members of the "4th estate" are the worse form of human life?
The "4th Estate" has become a 5th Column.

The Trump administration's CDC screwed up. Bad testing kits, an extremely low rate of tests is not revisionist history. Its an absolute fact deranged individuals wish to deny just to show their unconditional devotion to their dear leader.
I put most of the blame on the Democrats. If they weren't actively trying to cripple Trump's administration with spying, impeachment, Russia hoax, etc., Trump and his administration could have have spent more time on addressing this coronavirus health issue.

Shanked, you were surprisingly reasonable on this thread early on but now you've jumped the shark.

Tell me, how many tests should have been performed? Of those, how many weren't performed because of the CDC screw up?

Why did the CDC decided not to use the test recommended by the WHO? Do you agree with their reasoning or not? Why do you trust the WHO more than the CDC?
I'm looking at how countries like South Korea and the UK have been testing people. Its night and day with what we've gotten out of the CDC. Are you trying to say the South Koreans have gone overboard on this?

The situation in SK is no where equal to the current situation in the USA. Shut up and take a seat over there.

How is anyone defending the CDC right now? Tests should have been developed and already widely distributed. They should have been testing near where anyone was quarantined or released from quarantine.

Appears it's out of the bag on the west coast at this point.

Are you under the impression that stuff like this could happen overnight or in just a matter of a week or two? They have been working on it just because some dumb liberals hate a Trump doesn't change the fact.

I was wondering the same thing, in a way, several pages ago.

Who made the decision to invent a different test from the one that was obviously working? I wish someone had asked that question at the press conference.

That decision let someone slip through the cracks in California, and now there is an entire line of healthcare workers who had been treating that patient for a week without PPE. That's not good, and it was preventable.

Again, I love Trump's policies and shudder at the thought that he might not win, but I want to know what happened with that test.

The point is that China and SK were already using a perfectly good test that WHO offered, and for some reason we declined it and designed our own, which did not work. That's why we were not testing anyone: we were trying to figure out what was wrong with ours and to fix it. Huge waste of time and opportunity.

The R0 is troubling, for sure. Combined with the ease that it transferred, I think we're in for a long haul here, particularly for the elderly and at risk.

But, for the general population, I think it's going to be a huge inconvenience for a while and then pass.

I'm 39 and had bronchitis (which turned into a slight pneumonia, whatever that means) in December. It sucked tremendously.

The good news in my opinion is that the numbers so far show covid-19 is nowhere as deadly as SARS or MERS, which was my initial fear when this thing started. The only place where this doesn't hold is Iran, but their data is about as trustworthy as China's, and I imagine their public health system is likely far worse than China.

While I hope this is the case, the low CFR is based on Chinese data, which is suspect.

South Korea data, which I trust, had a much higher CFR when calculated with a week delay. I would like to see if the South Korean data converges to a single CFR.

The Singapore numbers are more trustworthy as well, and I think they are yet to report a death (obviously a much smaller sample size vs SK). Hopefully it's another sign of a lower CFR in counties with modern health systems.

Of course this is what Washington is worried about.

They should be more focused on more pressing concerns.

Can someone help explain to me why there is so much confusion and debate surrounding the fatality rate for people infected with the Coronavirus?

I understand the debate in the beginning when we were all trying to decide if China's numbers were legit.

Out of curiosity I ran the calculations myself from data obtained from

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries and this is what I came up with.

Fatality Rate By Country
Fatality Rate = Fatalities / (Recovered + Fatalities)

Country: S. Korea
2/29/20: 41.46%
2/28/20: 40.00%

Diamond Princess
2/29/20: 37.50%
2/28/20: 37.50%

Italy
2/29/20: 36.71%
2/28/20: 31.34%

Philippines
2/29/20: 33.33%
2/28/20: 33.33%

Iran
2/29/20: 25.90%
2/28/20: 31.78%

Taiwan
2/29/20: 16.67%
2/28/20: 16.67%

USA
2/29/20: 12.50%
2/28/20: 0.00%

France
2/29/20: 14.29%
2/28/20: 15.38%

Japan
2/29/20: 13.51%
2/28/20: 13.51%

China
2/29/20: 6.73%
2/28/20: 7.10%

Hong Kong
2/29/20: 6.25%
2/28/20: 10.00%

All other countries that have patients that have recovered but no fatalities:
2/29/20: 0.00%
2/28/20: 0.00%

Australia
Belgium
Cambodia
Canada
Egypt
Finland
Germany
India
Israel
Macao
Malaysia
Nepal
Oman
Romania
Russia
Singapore
Spain
Sri Lanka
Thailand
U.A.E.
U.K.
Vietnam

World Fatality Rate:
2/29/20: 6.88%
2/28/20: 7.23%

I know that the figures will continue to change and a range will start to stabilize as more and more time passes. I also know that unseen factors can play havoc on statistics at the beginning when the data collection process first starts taking place.

For example: People that are more susceptible to the disease dying quicker and thus making the fatality rate seeming higher than what it will be but

Even if we look solely at the information coming out of China the fatality rate would seem to be a lot higher than anything I have seen published officially.

What am I missing?

FWIW, the WHO test is unreliable and delivers a lot of false positives and false negatives. As a result, sick people have been released to the public and healthy people have been sent to quarantine.

It's not a reliable test, so the CDC had good reason to develop their own.

And the problem with the CDC test wasn't the design, but a manufacturing error.

Wonder when this gets to the point where flight attendants start revolting and saying, "I'm not flying today"? (talking more about international flights).

That's pretty much what stopped the US carriers from flying to China.

The crews simply flat out refused to fly the routes.

See my post up a little bit on this page.

That said, Kirkland has a fairly large Asian population, so if they find out where it came from, China or Korea would be the most likely places.

Seattle has one of the largest Asian populations in the US and the airport services just about every country in Asia.

This occurring in Seattle area is no shock to me personally.
