Seems like an arbitrary number. Does the virus really target large events vs small gatherings?

You cite a lack of critical thinking, but you want us to simply take what you say as truth with no sources to back your claim. That's not critical thinking.
I want you to get off your arse and challenge what the government propagandists are feeding you. I want you to research this virus yourself. I want you to come to your own independent conclusions. I want you to act like you went to Texas A&M and learned how to teach yourself.

I spent days getting a crash course in virulogy to understand the seriousness... I've done my research and I don't currently believe its a bioweapon. Now if you would care to share your legitimate sources, I'll be happy to review them.
You have to google his sources yourself... Never shares them. Just tells you to look it up.

Indeed. Like I said, I've gone down this rabbit hole big time and have spent too much time learning about all this in order to speak intelligently and act intelligently for the sake of my family. I've seen stuff regarding bioweapon theories, but not one of them pass muster. Peer reviews break them down hardcore. So unless he can bring legitimate material to review, he needs to stfu and stop trying to incite panic.

This is correct

If it's a bio weapon, it's the ****tiest bio weapon ever made.

No it won't
Anyone that's been to China is subject to quarantine upon return after a health check and is advised to self-quarantine for at least two weeks. Hubei means you're quarantined regardless. If it wasn't for that little snippet, I'd be in China and HK in a week.

I'm as prepared as I can be. I have 2 small children and take this serious AF. But the scenario you painted is literally as bad as it can get. I dont see that happening right now. Yes there is tons of disinformation and troubling reports and news, but if you are going to paint Armageddon, provide a link at least if you want people to take you seriously.

I posted earlier in the thread that my daughters have a classmate in italy at the moment. The school made the decision to prevent the child from returning to school when he returns.

I'd cancel. You will end up with a two week quarantine at some point in your trip. Could end up in on while in Italy and then another once you get back to the US. Not worth it.

Not at all upset about it... we've asked for proper sources. He plays it off as we need to do a better job of inferring info and stop being government drones. He's not engaging in a discourse that's educational... it's conspiracy theory porn.

Swine flu killed 12k Americans, it cost 1% of GDP, this is a huge nothing burger. Likely will not be as bad as swine flu or influenza, taking precautions, smart, over reacting dumb. The media is certainly over reacting. Any company limiting travel in the US is Likely over reacting.

Back on topic.... at some point we'll have to decide if we just need to let it run it's course or try to quarantine everyone and everything.

The constant unexpected disruptions could be worse than the disease. I'm starting to think we say **** it and let it run free.

It's also not particularly lethal. The death rate for relatively young, healthy people continues to drop as the sample size grows larger, and that's still an overestimation because of the thousands who never see a doctor because their symptoms are mild. And that's without diving into the rates of asymptomatic carriers, which seems to be the predominant presentation in young children.

The reality is the true chances of the average working age adult dying if they contract this are probably between 0.1-0.4%, and the ultimate data will bear that out. Still higher than the flu, but again nowhere near societal collapse.

As of now, they seem to have done the job. In almost 10 weeks, the US has 20ish cases that aren't from the cruise ship? The measures ARE working. I admit I thought Trump jumped the gun when he banned the Chinese and the flights started cancelling, but it was the right call and he went from a racist to not doing enough in a matter of three weeks.

My thoughts are if the need arises it'll be a lot easier to cancel later than deal with whatever policies are in place right now.

For clarity, I am not arguing this will collapse society... at all. I'm arguing this has a much higher chance of killing people who are already compromised than the flu does. If we don't take extra measures, we'll lose people that could have otherwise been saved. That's the extent of it.

Once the cases start popping up in patients without prior known epi exposures, it's out of the bag. We'll have hundreds of cases in the next two weeks and likely thousands by the end of March (assuming reports about their lack of known exposures are accurate).

Basically it means there is asymptomatic transmission occurring within the country.

Too early to let it spread. Containment only inconveniences a small number of people and buys time to get a vaccine and warmer weather. Once we have dozens of cases around the country then yes, we should let it go.

As this thing spreads, large scale gatherings and events will likely be cancelled and this thing will hopefully be contained within certain communities. 6-8 weeks and this thing like probably be an afterthought. I hope.

We are going in June - I've said all along let's see what March brings. Enough time to see what has happened to all those infected. If this thing is still spreading but people aren't dropping like flies in the videos from China, the markets will rebound , travel will resume and life will go on.

Sure, now combine Corona illness/deaths with the normal flu illnesses/deaths and there is a potential problem not to be ignored
