It's been mentioned that roughly 900K die per month in China, so had bad must this be for China to take the draconian actions that they have.

What would be useful to know is how many of that total normally die each month in the Wuhan area, where the most drastic actions have been taken.
Rough numbers:
Hubei Province/China Population. ~60,000,000/1,400,000,000 = 0.043

.043 x 10,800,000 (Total deaths in China) = 464,400

464,400/12 = 38,700/month dead in Hubei

Again rough numbers based on populations

The researchers estimate that the true burden of disease in Iran is 18,300 cases, but that it could be as low as 3,770 or as high as 53,470. They said uncertainty in the data creates a wide margin of error but that all of those numbers are much higher than has been officially reported, and any significant outbreak would be difficult for the country to handle.

I've got two young ones at home, 6 and almost 2. Should I be concerned for them? I haven't really rad anything about children getting ill from this illness. Anything I can give them to help from getting infected? We've already done all of our prep shopping (water, gatorade, canned goods, pasta, elderberry, vitamin c, etc.)

From what we currently know this virus seems to be harmless in children.

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/02/26/microsoft-warns-it-will-miss-guidance-for-segment-that-includes-windows-because-of-coronavirus.html

Quote:

Microsoft shares fell 2% on Wednesday after the company said it doesn't expect to meet the quarterly revenue guidance it previously provided for the segment that includes Windows.

"Although we see strong Windows demand in line with our expectations, the supply chain is returning to normal operations at a slower pace than anticipated at the time of our Q2 earnings call," Microsoft said in a statement. "As a result, for the third quarter of fiscal year 2020, we do not expect to meet our More Personal Computing segment guidance as Windows OEM and Surface are more negatively impacted than previously anticipated. All other components of our Q3 guidance remain unchanged."
This is the real story. of this whole thing. The death rates are supposedly low, but the global economic impact has not been finalized yet.

It seems to be much less severe in kids. That doesn't make them immune, or no risk, just less than someone in their 50's+.

(Edited my original post so it isn't as combative. I also want to acknowledge the person's tweet may have just been an observation to the world in general and it made me want to vent that we don't have truth because of China.)

We know this virus spreads as quickly as the flu. We know the recovery time seems to be long. We know the symptoms and what the worst case scenario is. However, we still really have no freaking clue about the true nature of this virus.

The Chinese have been lying thru their teeth and letting the world see only what they have wanted us to see. Therefore, I throw out any numbers of mild/serious/critical/dead with corresponding percentages out the window as most are based solely on Chinese numbers to this point.

The report saying they number of mild cases don't seem to be under reported? It's based on Chinese numbers where literally the increases seem to be slowing down because a directive came out from the CCP that any new cases reported would be on the region leaders heads. How the heck can we trust any reporting dealing with Chinese numbers, even if the data is reviewed by a 3rd party, as China is stacking the deck in their favor? The only way I would trust this is if 3rd party investigators were going door to door counting and monitoring every single day from the moment they arrived in country.

We are still in a holding pattern as Singapore, Japan, and SK cycle through mild/serious/critical/dead. I think anyone claiming anything is premature. Let's get some true numbers from Singapore, Japan, and SK regarding mild/serious/critical/dead and their corresponding percentages before we make claims. This may end up worse than the flu (I think likely, but am unsure of what factor), but there is a chance it isn't.

I think we can all agree at this point it's smart to prepare for a possible directive in your area to stay home for a week, two weeks, or three.

Or, possibly, even more.
So we plan for Black Swan events at my company. The powers that be are more concerned with the panic than they are with the virus. I talked to an FBI guy that I know today and he reiterated the same concern. Think College Station before Rita with the shelves empty, and gas pumps empty. That is what you need to plan for. His advice was to go to the store and buy $40-50 bucks worth of stuff before the President's speech tonight.

Buy the stuff you would eat over time like beans, rice, etc. He said that this could turn out to be a 99% non event, but it's always good to be prepared. His words, "That may be the best $40-50 you ever spent," if it does turn into something.

As I was at HEB buying this stuff today, I thought hell we got this. It's just like we were as kids being poor. Beans, Rice, Spaghetti O's, Ramen, canned chicken. I think I got a months worth of food for about $70. Hell, I might go back to the being poor method year round so I can retire at 50!

Just be logical and prepare for those that have no clue how to survive at the slightest hiccup in their normal routine.

No, our servants do, but besides my wife I do not associate with them. I expect my meals to be served in my quarters along with a brandy. I have no idea what those peasants eat. I am a $100,000aire and living the good life. Good day sir.

This will drive POTUS supporters mad, it's not political (well maybe a little) but truth be told the CDC and our federal govt shouldn't be dictating how states, counties and municipalities deal with this.

Feds should set guidelines and provide support, not dictate from on-high by granting themselves emergency powers.

Taught myself how to make homemade biscuits last weekend, was pretty easy. Being able to make some type of bread two or three weeks into a SHTF situation seems like a worthwhile skill to have.

I'm really starting to hate the "just the flu" retort. It's so damn annoying. We don't have any truth in trustworthy numbers.

I'm sure the CDC has been communicating with states, and the states have been communicating with counties.

It's annoying we need to declare a "state of emergency" in order to get "extra prepared". Can we not figure out a way to do this without using phraseology that will incite panic?

It's a government thing. Declaring an emergency frees up money they wouldn't have access to otherwise.
