I wish they would outline their reasons why. I hate headlines / tweets like this because although they say no confirmed cases at this time, people will still freakout.

This, in my opinion, is an example where the media not really helping matters. At minimum, link to the article. At most, provide follow up details.

Literally took 30 seconds and google. It is behind a paywall though
https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/SF-mayor-London-Breed-declares-state-of-emergency-15083811.php

I appreciate the link. I wasn't really asking for the information. I knew I could find it based on the tweet.

My point was BNO should be a little more responsible and provide the link at the very least. Honestly, how many people do you think are going to google that article?

Are the zombies arriving on our shores yet?

I was following this thread until the last few pages. Geezus. Now I quickly scroll and read a few comments and repeat and it's all the doomsday Discovery Channel Preppers.

I liked the Q thread, but even these last 5 pages make Q blush.

San Diego news today said they have released the 2 victims that were quarantined the last few weeks because they were now healthy.

Does it being a training video make the situation any better?

The situation is so bad that they're practicing forcibly quarantining with an elevated body temperature. Not sure how that's supposed to make me feel better if its only practice.

That should go on tomorrow's #s. We will see. There is usually a good 30 minutes to an hour where they post it as today and then adjust to the next day.

EDIT: Yeah Seoul is 15 hours ahead of Texas so anything reported tonight goes on tomorrow's #s for them. At least that's how worldmeter has been handling it.

Who pays for this?

What choice do you have? You can't force people to come to work during a pandemic because that actually makes the problem worse. Quarantine exists for a reason. The economy should be secondary to human life, period.

The appeal to emotion is meaningless. The money has to come from somewhere. Where does it come from?

It's Chinese propaganda just like everything else coming out of Beijing, probably being used to scare their citizens. It doesn't change any of the other information I'm seeing.

I have no doubt that things are horrible over there right now, plus it's been posted several times already so forgive me for not having a big reaction.

https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/SF-mayor-London-Breed-declares-state-of-emergency-15083811.php
Quote:

Amid intensifying worldwide concern about the spread of the new coronavirus, Mayor London Breed declared a state of emergency for San Francisco Tuesday, which will ramp up the city's efforts to prepare for and confront potential cases.

There have been no confirmed coronavirus cases in San Francisco to date, but "the global picture is changing rapidly, and we need to step-up preparedness," Breed said in a statement.

What I meant is there is no follow up detail for why a state of emergency has to be declared in order to step up preparedness. The phrase "state of emergency" sounds pretty scary to the average person.

The article is also behind a paywall (at least or me), so I couldn't go read the article in full to see if the SF Chronicle mentioned WHY a state of emergency needed to be declared. Now, I know that declaring a state of emergency allows the city to have more availability to greater resources, but does the average citizen? That's not really on BNO though if they didn't have access to the full article.

I'm just stating this is the entire point of my first comment on the matter. People will read that tweet / headline and freakout. Most who read the tweet will not go google the article. Those who will google the article won't be able to even read it in full.

If BNO had access to the full article and the article mentions why a state of emergency declaration is necessary for stepping up preparedness, then it would have been nice if they would have followed up the first tweet with that.

I'm just saying the media is playing an important role in this - especially since the media is now global. They really need to be careful what they are disseminating.

Declaring a state of emergency opens up Channels for funding from state/federal government I believe. Maybe they are just after some cash to help with their homeless problem and clean the **** up off the streets.

Agree with you. I know this just as you do.

My point is does the normal US citizen? I think the answer is no. So, to me, the responsible thing to do would be to provide a brief explanation so the people of SF do not panic.

By the way, I am not really arguing with you. I think people should also be responsible and search for the information themselves.

My only point is I believe the media needs to be super careful, especially now, as cases seem to be spreading.

I'll let this be my last post so it doesn't appear as if I'm arguing with you, and I don't want to derail the thread.

Hence the dilemma we are facing and why things like this can cause economic crashes.

Agree there should be a step between "it's just the flu" and state of emergency.

I have been watching closely since late January, and I feel like I have slowly ratcheted up my responses. Seems like they went from 0 to 11 pretty fast, but I think there are still a lot that have not even thought about it yet.

When the internet was more freed up coming out of China, these types of tweets and videos were everywhere. Hadn't seen anything similar from any of the other countries affected until now.

To me the disturbing thing about those pictures is that the bystanders either don't care or are too afraid to offer any sort of aid to a person laying on the ground. Maybe it's a cultural thing... but it's bothersome.

Yep. China is desperate to keep this from crashing their economy. Little do they realize that it's broken containment already. China has no choice here but it's going to significantly increase the spread of the virus there.
