Question. How are bills to be paid if this gets out of hand? Your mortgage, your car payments? If you're not working then you're not paying bills. How about money being paid to you if it's VA money or social security? If nobody at work to pay you then what???

We should have thought about that before electing a communist like Bernie.

Supply chain problems affecting anyone here directly yet?

I'm just a hobbyist but all of my IC and other electronics sources are now "on vacation" on eBay. I know, first world problems.

Anyones job actually being affected yet?
I'm actually an analyst in the transportation industry. Just in time manufacturing deliveries are having some issues out of China and their overall volume is down quite a bit. It's come up over the last two weeks but we should be seeing a sharp rise after lunar new year and we won't. Energy transportation is also starting to see some effect as energy demand is down sharply and some companies are either delaying (slightly) some projects or just stock piling a bit waiting on prices to rise slightly before easing back into the tap.

If China doesn't really get ramped up in the next 3 weeks I'll start to worry.

For those of us that live out in the country, and have water wells, that would seem to alleviate the need for fresh water, no?

Serious question, If it actually makes its way over to the U.S. in broad numbers, will you really be that afraid of getting a flu like virus if you are otherwise in good health? I think the real threat of this is the economy from governments and people panicking about it.
Yes and no. If it kills 1 out of 300 people (2.5% morbidity with a 15% infection rate), are you likely to die? Well no. But lots of people will. And remember this is just the first wave of the damn thing. In 1918 the second wave was far more lethal than the first. That, of course, is neither certain or even probably here, but there are a lot of unknowns not to be wary of treating this like just a case of bad sniffles.

If we lose mass power for extended periods of time then there's no since worrying about anything.

Aside from general preference to tap water, is there a real concern of local water sources becoming contaminated or otherwise undrinkable?

Unless people are vomiting or sh****** directly into the clearwells/finished water storage tanks, the disease is not going to make it thru the treatment process. Plus water treatment plants that have been modified within the past 10 years are able to be operated remotely if necessary

If anything does come over here, I'd think paid sick leave should be mandatory. At that point, it's a public health crisis. People showing up to work sick because they need the paycheck would greatly exasperate the problem.

I think the media needs to be really careful in what information they relay. Running with death counts is just as irresponsible as saying everything is alright. Politicians need to not discuss this thing because they can't keep their freaking bias out of it.

We really need to have breakdown of mild/serious/dead we can trust. It's incredibly frustrating China is an idiot nation when it comes to stuff like this. Until we know this, panic and fear will rule. This is the data I'm waiting for and the one I'm frustrated we don't have yet.

We knew this wasn't going to be contained from day 1. It has always been about delaying. There are too many idiot countries like Iran and Italy who were going to screw the world over.

At this point, it's a waiting game, and I truly hope this thing settles down with the flu at the end of flu season.

One good sign could be the relatively low fatality rate among the cruise ship passengers. We were on a 10 day cruise to Mexico's Pacific Riviera which ended last Friday and most passengers were geriatric. That means that the Corona virus, like the flu, seems survivable if you are relatively healthy. And even on that cruise, with staff being fanatical about having people wash hands and use sanitizer, there was a lot of rinovirus/upper respiratory stuff going on. It could be the ship's air circulation system but more likely just people being together, coughing and sneezing.

About 1 month delay from mild symptoms to serious or critical. Still to early to know.

True enough. The colds seemed to occur about a week after sailing but time will tell.

Shanked, wouldn't you agree that forgiving student loan debt would decrease stress and therefore increase resistance? Might as well swing for the fences!

Just went and got enough non-perishables for 2-3 months along with cleaning supplies, anti-inflammatory meds and expectorants to last a few weeks. Not worried about water until hurricane season.

I don't expect chaos. I expect schools to shut and businesses to be asked to use work remote if possible. Supplies may be in demand due to panic, but this isn't something that will destroy society. The warm humid weather is just around the corner which will probably slow this stuff. A vaccine will be found and life will go on.

If not, my wife is going to Spec's to load up on spirits... go down happy.

I agree contaminated water isn't a high probability. However Remotely operated doesn't mean operated from home, it also doesn't mean remotely maintained. Everything runs great remotely until there is a maintenance issue Then you have to source a replacement motor/compressor/pump or whatever . Also there are consumables involved in the process, how much chlorine/fluoride and whatever other chemicals do they keep on site?

This is my position. Get enough items to last a while so that if they do shut down businesses and schools, we don't have to go outside for a long time.

If we don't need happen to need any of that, well, we prepped for hurricane season a little earlier than normal.

Hoping we've just prepped for hurricane season.

I wish they would outline their reasons why. I hate headlines / tweets like this because although they say no confirmed cases at this time, people will still freakout.

This, in my opinion, is an example where the media not really helping matters. At minimum, link to the article. At most, provide follow up details.

Not saying run out and load up on debt but if this gets really out of hand financial institutions are going to collapse. We are a very LONG way from that but it's a possibility. I wouldn't bet the farm on it playing out that way though.

Your best bet is to cut out all unnecessary expenses now and build up a rainy day fund for the unfortunate day you get caught in a two to four week quarantine.

Amid intensifying worldwide concern about the spread of the new coronavirus, Mayor London Breed declared a state of emergency for San Francisco Tuesday, which will ramp up the city's efforts to prepare for and confront potential cases.

There have been no confirmed coronavirus cases in San Francisco to date, but "the global picture is changing rapidly, and we need to step-up preparedness," Breed said in a statement.

I agree. I also think that we would need to declare some sort of national emergency to prevent employers from forcing people to come to work or else such that employers who do that could be fined severely and/or punished with jail time.

We should not mess around if it gets that bad. Most of us are guilty of showing up to work with colds and such. We cannot afford to do that with this one.

What choice do you have? You can't force people to come to work during a pandemic because that actually makes the problem worse. Quarantine exists for a reason. The economy should be secondary to human life, period.

People Here need to remember that we are aware and tracking this issue. I ask people all day, in all walks of life, if they have heard about the virus or are preparing... the answer is no. The vast majority of people are either ignorant or apathetic. So don't stress out yet. Enough people are not panicking to cause hysteria. You got this.
