Futures jump on reports of coronavirus treatment breakthroughs
(Reuters) - U.S. stock index futures surged on Wednesday on reports of medical breakthroughs in the fight against the fast-spreading coronavirus and expectations of more stimulus from China to limit the economic fallout of the epidemic.
A Chinese university found an effective drug to treat people with the new virus, according to a local TV report. Separately, researchers in the UK told Sky news that they made a "significant breakthrough" in finding a vaccine.
Reuters has not verified the media reports, but several traders cited them for the sharp moves in global stock markets. U.S. stock index futures turned positive and the world equity index .MIWD00000PUS moved sharply higher after the reports.

That has been one of my biggest questions. How the hell are these people getting food? The articles talk about shutting down supermarkets, etc., then you have all the people barricaded into their buildings.Hogties said:

Some first hand anecdotal info -
Coworker's parents live in Wuhan so this is direct from the parents in Wuhan, not an anonymous internet post. The parents tell her it is much worse than anyone is reporting.
The elderly parents have a "small circle of friends" (what does that mean? fewer than 50? 25?). Of the small circle of friends, 5 have died from the disease. These are not health care workers in high risk environments but simply elderly residents in Wuhan. 5 dead in the "small circle of friends".
Parents are telling her that food is very hard to come by and they spend all day trying to figure out where to get food.
Parents are also telling her that all of the funeral homes in Wuhan are begging for any plastic bags (trash bags or other plastic bags) to put bodies in for transport because they are all out of body bags and normal supplies.

So that is first hand info from a known source, not an internet hero in their basement making stuff up and scaremongering for clicks.
That sounds like zombie apocalypse stuff. This is not last year's flu season.
I'm not heading for the hills (yet) but if I am paying attention to what is happening and the possibility of this spiraling out of control if it gains a foothold outside of China.
the cure is to lock everyone in their homes until all the sick people dieQuote:

Several cities in northern Italy did this the the 14thC black death pandemic. Sad to say it worked relatively speaking. No not advocating this approach just saying its happened before.TexasAggie_02 said:the cure is to lock everyone in their homes until all the sick people dieQuote:

Leaked Chinese videos and actions look apocalyptic. Hoping other races are less susceptible
Not convinced it's a bio weapon, but definitely open to the possibility.

Surely not everyone has months of food stock piled.
