I'm happy to play devils advocate on this in that I'm not concerned at all about a mass spread in the US because I've spent so much time in China and SE Asia over the years for work. Developed nations do not have these outbreaks. Our standard of living is significantly better than that of most in China and SE Asia. Look at SARS, MERS, H5N1, etc.. These are Asian issues that grow so quickly because of densely populated areas and complete lack of understanding of what we consider normal hygiene and standard bio-security preventions

IIRC, 36m infected, 600k hospitalized, and 57k died from the flu in the US in 2018. How is a couple thousand infected and a few hundred dead worrisome compared to the above?

Flu fatality rate = .01%
nCov fatality rate = 2%

The concern is that the 2019-nCoV is growing exponentially probably due to the fact that it's a novel virus that humans have no antibodies to combat. Additionally, the Chinese habit of lying about true numbers of ill and dead doesn't give anybody the warm and fuzzies. Add the fact that they have quarantined over a dozen cities and millions of their people, and it gets folks a mite more worked up than the flu.

Now imagine this stuff is roughly as contagious as influenza but 5 to 100 times more deadly, and even when not deadly, 10% of those infected require hospitalization.

Do that math for 36 million people infected

If the only thing that was going on was the reported numbers of sick and dead in China I wouldn't be concerned at all. Yeah big deal, small numbers considering, unlikely to come to my neck of the woods, and just another typical flu season type risk. No biggie.

But how about you forget you know any numbers about sick and dead and pretend the only thing you know is that China is saying they have an epidemic on their hands but they are taking steps to control it, and those steps include
- quarantining many of their major cities totaling the entire population of Texas and California
- in many of those quarantined cities only one person every other day can leave the home to scrounge for food and supplies ( I say scrounge because with those population restrictions what grocery stores and shops are open?
- mandatory widespread closing of businesses and schools that will absolutely impact their economy in severe ways
- Extreme PPE being worn by all Chinese government responders not just in direct proximity to infected patients, but just in the public square
- extreme measures are being taken by other countries to restrict travel including no flights and their own quarantine

Not knowing anything about the numbers of sick and dying, I would react to those Chinese and other govt reactions with the attitude that whatever is going in, it is not your daddy's flu.

And I for one do not hang my hat on anything the Chinese govt reports on numbers of sick and dying.

Potentially good news is rate of increase of confirmed cases is decreasing. Now just 19% and hasn't been above 22% in 5 days. Need that trend to continue. Based on the efforts to contain hopefully it slows way down.

I spent 2 years buying and merging and setting up logistics companies over there. Many were soe. We spent over 150 mil over there doing that. I ate ****ing dinner in the ccp headquarters in shangai. I spent weeks in the jinjiang headquarters. I ate their ****ty food. I spent weeks in ****holes. Spent weeks in the la meridian and ritz. I had their execs living at my place in between trips.
