Now we are getting some benchmarks. Massive quarantine makes more sense if that is the case.
And you said it is a small private school. Hence more direct notice, not as much attention to public hype. Probably more reliable. No, that's fatalistic loser thinking. Excluding kids with fever can make a significant difference. Even if they just have a fever for, say, 10% of the contagious period -- excluding them reduces R0 by 10% (or more, given that the period with fever is the "maximally contagious" period).
