You do know that people that die from viral infections already have weak or compromised immune systems, right?

So...
If 5 confirmed cases, why has the brazos valley health department and TAMU not come out and said the suspected case is negative?
Did the quackshack send the sample to the wrong CDC for testing?

Can we get an actual name for it please?

Coronavirus is a category of viruses.

I propose Wuhanana, or Wuhanaids.

It has a name already I'm pretty sure.

Could be absolutely nothing. But I Noticed an incoming flight to Easterwood (college station) from Atlanta Ga. Which happens to be CDC headquarters. Not sure if they charter flights from private companies, but this is a for hire jet.

I am guessing they want to be 100% sure before the confirm it. If the dude comes back positive, things will change dramatically on campus to say the least.

Whats best? Hold off on the announcement until secondary cases (IF ANY) are confirmed from his direct contacts OR send everyone on campus into a panic.

They aren't sitting around on their thumbs waiting for the results. Be patient and calm.

Seriously? You're trying to equate a flu from over 100yrs ago to current living conditions? Not like hygiene, health, and awareness has improved in that time or anything.

Quote:

Scientists offer several possible explanations for the high mortality rate of the 1918 influenza pandemic. Some analyses have shown the virus to be particularly deadly because it triggers a cytokine storm, which ravages the stronger immune system of young adults.[15] In contrast, a 2007 analysis of medical journals from the period of the pandemic[16][17] found that the viral infection was no more aggressive than previous influenza strains. Instead, malnourishment, overcrowded medical camps and hospitals, and poor hygiene promoted bacterial superinfection. This superinfection killed most of the victims, typically after a somewhat prolonged death bed.

Or maybe because it's the one that healthy, younger people reacted strongly to.

I wasn't suggesting this was a medical transport. I'm more thinking CDC officials coming to speak to press/local authorities.

Only that it is known for targeting the young and healthy. That is all. Not always does a flu strain attack the old and infirm.

Has there been anything to suggest that young people are dying from this disproportionately? All the deaths I've seen were 50+.

no, the Irish was claiming just because he is "healthy" he feels he has little to no risk from this virus

The point was that may not be the case.

Anyways, enough of this tangent.

I have little to no risk of mortality from contracting the virus...I never once said I was immune to the virus.

Hmmmm, I wonder what world events were going on in 1918 that could've possibly created a disproportionate number of younger, malnourished deaths from the flu?

I believe what they're pointing out is that the Spanish flu virus itself tended to have an abnormally bad effect on healthier people (like this). Takes no other event to hurt people who would not normally be hurt by a flu virus.

Interestingly enough bird flu and swine flu's mortality seem also to be related to cytokine storms. (Link)

Quote:

Cytokine storm is now seen as a likely major cause of mortality in the 1918-20 "Spanish flu"which killed more than 50 million people worldwideand the H1N1 "swine flu" and H5N1 "bird flu" of recent years. In these epidemics, the patients most likely to die were relatively young adults with apparently strong immune reactions to the infectionwhereas ordinary seasonal flu epidemics disproportionately affect the very young and the elderly.
If this virus is similar, that means that being young and otherwise healthy may not in fact by itself tell the whole story about likelihood of severity or mortality.

They weren't heathy young adults though in 1918. Just like they weren't healthy during the SARS outbreak. Living conditions and hygiene play a major role. Hygiene has drastically improved in western culture over 100yrs and the Chinese population density, diets, and poor hygiene plays a major factor in their metros being a breeding ground for influenza
Zobel

Non sequitur. Hygene and general population health are common for all ages in any particular decade, so these should affect general mortality rates - not the distribution of the mortality by age demographic.

Normal flu mortality is for the very young, the very old, and those with other problems. Spanish flu inverted this, where young adults were the most likely mortality because of the immune system response it caused. Paradoxically the healthier your immune system was the more susceptible you became to that kind of reaction.
