The good news is that the mortality of this only appears to be around 2-3%, which is still scary if a major outbreak occurs but compared to MERS (35% mortality) and SARS (15%) it's not nearly as virulent.
Based on the actions of the Chinese government I expect this mortality rate to climb significantly in the next 7-10 days.

Maybe, but all we can go on is the data we have.
You really think China is using its military to cut off travel to cities with a combined population of 29 million over 25 deaths (0.00000862%)? Come on man...

It's a novel virus. That's incredibly scary to anyone who understands what that means.

In comparing apples to apples, this would be like the US closing off the entire DFW metroplex. Can you imagine the impact on stock markets, travel, and the economy when you do that?

This is a big deal.... I don't care what anyone says. This is a virus that has clearly spread across the globe already. The question is can it be contained? We all clearly don't want any other pandemic.

Ah yes we can certainly count on the ever trustful Chinese people to self report their illness and not hide it.

Why do our politicians continue to think that everyone on the planet behaves like Westerners? These people are utterly brain dead.

Novel meaning something other than just `new' strain of coronavirus?
Novel meaning that you probably don't have many populations that have cross immunity from other forms of the disease. That means more vulnerability for more people which means more carriers which means more potential to spread.

That's state department, different than CDC, but yeah don't go to China. I wouldn't go to Asia either.

It's a brand new strain of coronavirus that prior to December 2019 no human had ever been exposed to. We are all immune naive to this and it could absolutely ravage our species under the right circumstances. There will be little to no cross immunity among humans.

As best I can tell/recall, this is by far the largest quarantine in human history. Just wuhan would be. And it's only one of 11.

Other than the nazis siege of Leningrad, I don't know of any similar effort to quarantine a whole city since the Black Plague that killed 40% of Europe.

This is either really serious or by far the biggest overreaction in human history.

Knowing what I know about China and genetic/biowarfare research, I am quite concerned.

People that are saying it's not that deadly...you don't quarantine almost 30 million people if 25 have died. Multiply by at least 1,000 if not more.

I see. Between yours and aezvmp's post sounds like definite reason to cancel the impeachment farce and enter a full attention mode (public and press, not the President who can certainly multi-task) to this matter. If we had to quarantine a city, how would we make sure it was supplied? Time to focus on adult things.

I love how some of the same people that panick over small outbreaks of measles - a disease that has not killed any able bodied Americans and has killed one sick American in two decades - are cool with the importation of a foreign disease because "it's probably ok"

Absolutely. And also because of their more blunt nature. China would blow off hundreds of lives rather than seriously crimp their economy. They made great effort to sideline any issues and lesser outbreaks during the 2008 Olympic games so that nothing would disturb the proceedings.

Since they are NOT blowing it off, it seems far worse than it looks even now, and that is very bad.

China is the type of country that would nuke their own cities to save face. I doubt anything is off the table.

I cannot believe that the Democrats are trying to impeach Trump and China probably started a pandemic with a virus they created in a lab.

Maybe not that far, but your point is solid and what am saying. China WOULD dismiss hundreds of lives rather than quarantine cities and partially shut down their economy. So this is scaring them as worse, something they are pulling out alot of stops to halt.

Senate is meeting at 10:30 about this virus outbreak. It may come to the public demonstrating in the mall "all of you knock it off, and get back to running the country. The election will decide who is President or we drive you all out."

Something to that effect.

IF this is a biowarfare novel virus--- it rates that.

You only do that for excess numbers, OR, when trying to keep something out of structures and away from other people--- somewhat like leprosy. If it is airborn, you don't do that. Odds are this is indirect evidence of many cases overflowing room inside, rather than the other two scenarios.

Someone explain why this is a big deal. Ebola was going to kill us all. So was H1N1... so was whatever that virus in the carribean that hurts pregnant chicks. Then suddenly it's all a nothing burger.

What gives?

Even the ebola outbreak didn't result in quarantining giant cities. Partly because it is so fast acting.

The other thing is we don't know this is a `big deal' for sure.

IF it is a bio-warfare weapon - or even an artificial engineering for other purposes- that got loose, you can count on it being a bid deal. The location being in the same general place as the big special lab is very unsettling.

3% of your nations population is quarantined is a big deal...

I think it is transferred more easily than Ebola. The incubation is 7-14 days according to reports. People have been guessing a 15% mortality rate.

China has quarantined 30 million people. Yet only a few have died according to them. You are really quarantining that many people for a few deaths? Yeah right.

Also they built a bio-lab 3 years ago in Wuhan. They were working with this virus. So maybe their man-made virus escaped the lab.

. Most natural screams of epidemic are bullsh*t. My issue is that the cdc follows political winds and not actual concern for the public.. Read Levins Liberty and Tyrrany chapter 4 and you will understand. He loads it with historical facts.

Ebola isn't spread via airborne droplets and it kills people too quickly for sustained widespread pandemics to occur.

Under the right scenario, a novel respiratory virus could kill hundreds of millions of people in a matter of months with modern travel as it is.
