So if my count is right that's 7 cities and roughly 25 MM people. That is roughly equivalent to quarantining the population of Texas. That's insane.

Yeah. And multiply the #'s they've been giving by 1000

I know. We have to learn more what this virus does and how fast, and if you do recover from it. Those measures do not seem like something a nation would do to just avoid an inconvenient `disease making the rounds' with yes even a few deaths.

This total shut down stuff sounds worse.

Lots of media downplaying the virus as some far off issue.

Mother****ers this could be in your backyard with one plane flight.

If the incubation period is as extended as some of the rumors (7-14 days), then it is already here in sizeable numbers.

It's already here.

But until cases show up in D.C., NYC, etc., the coastal media elites won't care.

Hell, they pulled a passenger off a plane at LAX today who came from China (Wuhan) who had the fever. The kicker, they tried to get around the increased scrutiny by flying through Mexico City and then up to LAX.

Thank God whoever on our end still caught them, but damn - Mexico City is a huge airport and there's so many people they could have encountered just while changing planes.

Could be in your backyard? Don't kid yourself. They are already here. 70000 students come to colleges and universities in the US each year. Some of them went home over the holidays. And they came back here for school before the lockdown happened. Just like the student here. He won't be the only one. And if they are sick they will be scared to go to the doctor.

If they do that we have good reason not to let mainland Chinese students into the country for the foreseeable future.

All these climate change alarmists. Want to worry about something? See China. Disease. Pollution. You really worried about the end of times? There lies your problem and what should be your focus. Otherwise, you just reveal yourself as interested in a power grab

Flip the script for a second. If our government was shutting down that many different cities one after another as fast as China is doing, would it be assumed to not be a very serious matter? That is what concerns. China is not so backwards that its reactions are going to be so hugely different in response.

nish flu only killed about 2% of the infected. Oddly it was mostly young healthy people. But it still killed 40-50 million people.

That said, if this flu kills 2%, mostly sick and elderly, China would not be locking 25 million people into their cities.

The number one absolute top thing Chinese leaders fear is panicked, rioting population. Top. Fear.

This act is CREATING their worst fear.

Something big is going on

I think it's horribly telling that they are doing it. Forget texas. Imagine doing it for the greater Houston area. Martial law. No transportation in or out. Food and gasoline would become scarce in about 2 days. It would make Harvey look like a soft open.

The good news is that the mortality of this only appears to be around 2-3%, which is still scary if a major outbreak occurs but compared to MERS (35% mortality) and SARS (15%) it's not nearly as virulent.

There's some reports the real mortality rate is around 17% - China is underreporting.

Based on the actions of the Chinese government I expect this mortality rate to climb significantly in the next 7-10 days.

I agree completely but based on the history of China with the SARS pandemic I am skeptical about the accuracy of the current data at face value especially since they have put 29million citizens in lockdown.

You really think China is using its military to cut off travel to cities with a combined population of 29 million over 25 deaths (0.00000862%)? Come on man...

Novel meaning something other than just `new' strain of coronavirus?
