So not to fear monger here in the US, since most cases are in China. But how do you protect yourself in the US without looking like an idiot? My immune system sucks and when so get sick, I always get sicker than a normal person. Whatever China has mutated could possibly kill me. How to protect myself? Serious and not serious answers welcome.

Not really medical advice (that would be on the Health and Fitness board--they already gave good advice on diabetes for a relative), but do you fly much? Hopefully not. If your system is that way, try to avoid airports and being in aircraft as much as possible. They are self-contained incubators for passing on things. It is going to be the big problem with this outbreak too. Any enclosed area in fact, where people sneezing carelessly and you can already be `too close'. If go to church or similar enclosures with crowds, hang around the back or sides if necessary even in normal flu season.

I actually haven't had a need to fly in several years. I generally take precautions and try to stay away from large gatherings of people like a store or movie. A few years ago flu season seemed bad near me. So I think everyone looked at me strangely but I often wore disposable gloves when I would go out and I knew I was going to touch a bunch of surfaces. Likely overkill, but my health wasn't as good as it is now. I'm not to the wearing a mask phase yet, but if it jumps to the US would probably stock up.

Maybe I'm overthinking it, but I fall into that category of small children, the elderly, and people with immune system issues. Thankfully I'm not taking any medications that impair my immune system (did a few years ago), so going to knock on wood and pray that they keep this away from me somehow.

I see. Since you mention gloves, bear in mind that other than the obvious culprit of doorknobs, learned one of the most common source of germs passed is restaurant menus. Had never thought of that By "jumps to the US" you mean a more general outbreak like a flu going around. Because it already did arrive in Seattle. Hopefully quarantined -- but it depends on if that was a case of they knew to quarantine even when landed, because that would mean Seattle checked everyone deplaning.

Despite imposing some draconian travel bans, it's becoming increasingly clear that this isn't going to happen. Even after quarantining an entire city of 11 million people - Wuhan is the 7th largest city in China and larger than any US city - experts are warning that it's too late: The cat is already out of the bag.

But that won't stop Beijing from trying: Now that Wuhan has been effectively cut off, Chinese officials announced another city-wide quarantine on Thursday: Huanggang city, which is in Hubei province and situated close to Wuhan, will suspend outbound train and bus services, as well as all bus services within the city effective Friday. All public places, including movie theaters, have been ordered to close until further notice, practically guaranteeing that the quarantine will take a bite out of GDP. Though even after authorities cut off all flights, Reuters reports that a few airlines were still running flights out of Wuhan.

Inside the Chinese lab poised to study world's most dangerous pathogens

22 February 2017 Updated: 23 February 2017
WUHAN, CHINA

A laboratory in Wuhan is on the cusp of being cleared to work with the world's most dangerous pathogens. The move is part of a plan to build between five and seven biosafety level-4 (BSL-4) labs across the Chinese mainland by 2025, and has generated much excitement, as well as some concerns.

Some scientists outside China worry about pathogens escaping, and the addition of a biological dimension to geopolitical tensions between China and other nations. But Chinese microbiologists are celebrating their entrance to the elite cadre empowered to wrestle with the world's greatest biological threats.

"It will offer more opportunities for Chinese researchers, and our contribution on the BSL4-level pathogens will benefit the world," says George Gao, director of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Key Laboratory of Pathogenic Microbiology and Immunology in Beijing. There are already two BSL-4 labs in Taiwan, but the National Bio-safety Laboratory, Wuhan, would be the first on the Chinese mainland.

The lab was certified as meeting the standards and criteria of BSL-4 by the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS) in January. The CNAS examined the lab's infrastructure, equipment and management, says a CNAS representative, paving the way for the Ministry of Health to give its approval. A representative from the ministry says it will move slowly and cautiously; if the assessment goes smoothly, it could approve the laboratory by the end of June.

The Wuhan lab cost 300 million yuan (US$44 million), and to allay safety concerns it was built far above the flood plain and with the capacity to withstand a magnitude-7 earthquake, although the area has no history of strong earthquakes. It will focus on the control of emerging diseases, store purified viruses and act as a World Health Organization 'reference laboratory' linked to similar labs around the world. "It will be a key node in the global biosafety-lab network," says lab director Yuan Zhiming.

I totally trust the chicoms accreditation service.
And it's nice to see budget was no hindrance in their $44mm BL4 lab complex.

I'd worry about sitting next to/near someone who's actively sneezing everywhere but the cabin air on an aircraft is fairly clean. It is recycled by the pressurization system roughly every 5-10 minutes - you're not just sitting in the same air for 2-4 hours.

Yeah I hate to say it but they are likely going to limit if not shut down air travel to/from China. If you are a US citizen the state department needs to strike fear to get you to come home. Provide planes if necessary and after a certain point maybe a week or two if this keeps spreading I predict air travel to/from China will likely be closed without special clearance.

This is not going to be good. And if the Chinese really created this virus oh hell. The economic hit will be huge. If you didn't move your production out of China, I don't know what will happen if they start shutting down the ports. They show no qualms about shutting downs city of 11 million people. If they can't contain this could be really really bad.

And if this spreads to Africa with all the Chinese there. I yeah this could be bad. All these globalists are going to see the repercussions of unfettered travel and immigration first hand.

I hate to be a fear monger but whatever numbers China is putting out it's probably 200 times worse.

The reactions by the Chinese Government sure lead you to believe it's a lot worse than they are admitting. I hope they get this under control. I have a trip to SE Asia planned in a couple of months, and I don't need this thing spreading across the whole region.

I would already be planning on cancelling. If some kind of large quarantine hits you don't want to be over under some system like that. What I don't like hearing is that this is a man-made virus. They shouldn't really be many. Sounds a bit like a weapon.

I don't know why it is assumed it could be contained much to China.

I know I am not the only one thinking that the Chinese shouldn't have been allowed to build a level 4 bio lab. It sounds like the Chinese version of Chernobyl, and that it is destined to cause problems (yay! Communism).

Also, I agree that you don't shut off tens of millions of people and cancel a major holiday without something being way worse than what is reported.
