If China is reporting 139 cases, then you better believe that the real number is closer to 10,000 plus.

Which means the mortality ratio is overblown too
Or falsly recorded,

I get corona virus every time I drink at least 12 Coronas in a day. Best cure is lots of water followed by a greasy Mexican lunch with a margarita followed by a nap

Who knew? Pillars of shame actually exist...

And this Japanese shop owner is doing his part to avoid being on one.

"No Chinese Allowed": Hysteria Grips Asia As Millions Travel Amid Viral Outbreak

On Wednesday, health officials in China once again announced a sharp increase in the number of reported cases of the mysterious new coronavirus that is now confirmed to have caused at least nine deaths, as we reported last night.

As hundreds of millions of Chinese leave the country for vacation destinations abroad - all part of what the NYT described as the largest human migration on Earth - the hysteria has reached a fever pitch.

In Japan, one shopkeeper in the mountain town of Hakone (a popular vacation destination) has been heavily criticized for hanging a sign outside his door reading 'no Chinese allowed'. The full message displayed on the sign (pictured below) reads: "No Chinese are allowed to enter the store...I do not want to spread the virus."

According to the SCMP, the as-yet-unidentified owner of the confectionery store told the Asahi newspaper that he used a translation application to write the message in Chinese, adding, "I want to protect myself from the virus and I don't want Chinese people to enter the store."

Japanese tourism officials apologized for the shopkeepers' actions after he was roundly criticized on social media.

Shin Hae-bong, a professor of law at Aoyama Gakuen University, said the store owner was not breaking the law, as Japan doesn't have any laws against discrimination on the books.

And while Chinese tourists could try to take him to court, that would take some time.

The Japanese hate the Chinese anyways and vice versa. This just gives them an opportunity to wear their racism openly.

No. One confirmed case in Washington and the person is quarantined.

Also leads me. To believe it's worse than reported. Spanish flu? No. But worse than 400ish cases with 9 deaths and only 2200 exposed. You don't shut a city almost 50% bigger than NYC for 400 people.

Africa: more gross stuff than you can comprehend happens here daily.

China: Hold my beer. Wuhan virus: Rats and live wolf pups on the menu at China food market linked to virus outbreak. Food emporium: "A price list circulating on China's Internet for a business at the Wuhan market lists a menagerie of animals or animal-based products, including live foxes, crocodiles, wolf puppies, giant salamanders, snakes, rats, peacocks, porcupines, camel meat and other game - 112 items in all.

"Freshly slaughtered, frozen and delivered to your door," said the price list for the vendor, "Wild Game Animal Husbandry for the Masses".

I am convinced the Chinese have had all humanity beaten out of them through hundreds of years of brutal oppression. These people behave more like insects than they do any of the rest of humanity.

Rural Chinese are just now becoming civilized in the way that the rest of the world, even Africa, has been for hundreds of years.

Racism (Han vs all others), extreme poverty from statist planning and neglect, a brutal federal government that required conformity over effectiveness, communism, the Great Leap Forward famine brought on by forced farming collectivism....the list goes on and on.

These people created their own gods, religion, culture, and diets to endure.

SARS came out of the exact same market. The first carriers were workers at the market. That disease was found in the remains of Civets (cat breed) being sold that themselves had contracted the disease from eating infected bats.

How do they track these? How do they know 200 people had the exact same strain of a virus?

Maybe another 2000 had it and already got better and never saw a doctor?

What makes this something to be more concerned about than the flu?

IIRC, Nate Silver has a book that touches on this and how some diseases go underreported and others are overestimated. I think it was The Signal and the Noise. . Good read.

Yeah, if and when that virus that wipes out a sizeable chunk of the population comes along, bet on it originating from one of these chinese live markets where there is all sorts of nasty, fresh stuff mixing. It's a petri dish of zoonotic diseases, and one of these days, one of those hybrid mutations it produces is going to be a beast.
