I have said a few times that Chief Justice Roberts controls the calendar on SCOTUS. None of the current SCOTUS member can be pleased with what is happening. (Even RBG doesn't like it.) Plus Kagan and Kav have worked together before and have a friendly relationship. (Harvard where she hired him.)
Kav is only recused if he's not there for oral arguments. Roberts can change the SCOTUS calendar to allow for a vote on Kav. If Kav goes down in the vote, no harm no foul. If he's confirmed, he can be seated and play catch-up on the briefing (assuming he's already selected his clerks and they are working quietly in the background on the early cases on the SCOTUS schedule.)
So if Grassley agrees to this delay, it may be because Roberts has already told him not to sweat it.

I wish this were true, but if there was, I think they would have already played it. Going for a "gotcha" in a hearing with some supposed sexual assault survivor (I'm vomiting on my keyboard as I type that tripe) does not sound like a wise strategy. Remember health care reform. They are going to keep extending without really having a plan and at some point Kavanaugh will just walk away or they will let media drive a false narrative to the point they think they have to pull support. Have the damn vote and move on.

Perhaps, but let me suggest this: Maybe this isn't about Grassley and Ford dancing with each other or just getting Kavanaugh confirmed. Maybe this about getting Kavanaugh confirmed AND keeping his reputation intact. In this case, it is much more than just a gotcha....it is the salvaging of his reputation. Maybe the only way to have a chance at both is to have her testify.

Or it could be that Kavanaugh himself wants her to testify. He wants to face his accuser and answer the charges directly. We can all say to play it smart and secure the SC seat at all costs.....but it isn't our reputation on the line. It is his. And maybe he is telling the committee that his reputation is more important to him than the seat.

Not necessarily. I haven't seen anything that said that for certain, just rumour and speculation. Someone else said that Roberts can control when the SCOTUS term starts.
