Great, how is it working out for James Talarico? Even with our heretics in the Catholic Church I have the ability to point at them and say "heretic! That is NOT what we believe"

Every single heresy ever came about with someone's personal interpretation of scripture. Hell Talarico cited the annunciation for why he believe God is Pro-Choice.

I'm briefly in Texas visiting family. Wife's baby brother getting married next weekend. What is this Talarico and why should I care as a Florida Man?

He is the newest Democrat skin suit pretending to be a folksy Protestant pastor who has a decent chance of being the junior Texas senator, because Ken Paxton while light years better than Cornyn is an absolute degenerate.

He argues that since God gave Mary the choice to bear Jesus, he supports abortion.

Ok, so it's Dumb vs Dumber? Or the Bad album vs the Even Worse album? Sounds like run of the mill American politics. Hey everybody... It's election season and choose between the types of manure we have served up for you. I was wondering why I was seeing their ads last week watching the Ags vs MO St. Donalds vs Jolly I get (FL gov), but TX Senate? We're now sending such manure choices via interstate commerce. Murica.

At least you are being fair and saying he's pretending to be…so he's either pretending or is a "run of the mill" Protestant
As an outsider, I really don't know how to pin down run of the mill protestant because of the variety of confessions and liturgical styles... Episcopal vs cowboy church vs pentecostal vs that tbn guy on the television.

For us Catholics as well as the Orthodox, protestantism is some weird mishmash of things over there. It's likely why you get the run of the mill comments... it's all weird and foreign and likely why the Talarico is viewed by many as part of that vast amount of differentness and he doesn't stick out as an aberation. Spitballing here. Anyway, have a blessed Sunday y'all.

Talarico is a run-of-the-mill Protestant whack-a-doodle.

Since a good bit of protestants cannot recognize heresies and beliefs completely antithetical to Christianity they are falling for his preacher schtick and false Christianity.

The dude very well may be in the US Senate so even as a Florida man, you should care. If Texas goes America goes.

This basically disqualifies your opinion on Protestants if you classify Talarico as a "run of the mill" one.

I failed to see the difference.

He is interpreting scripture as he sees it to the best of his personal interpretations. I'm sure he even feels led by the Holy Spirit and his heart is open to Christ.

He is absolutely a Protestant. One so palatable to Protestants that he will possibly or likely become the first Democrat elected statewide in 30+ years.

They just needed the right guy that appeals to the most people.

Why do you possess the authority to disqualify his interpretations?

Is he a non-Protestant for doing things the best he is led by the Holy Spirit to understand? I'm sure he feels he is.

He has been dedicated to a church and seminary to a far greater extent than most people.

Protestantism has been the genesis of moral relativism, women's lib, universal suffrage, and virtually everything ailing the west in this moment.

You are confusing "protestantism" (really the western American trajectory of Christianity) with a cultura/societal slide to philistinism and narcissism, because many reject Jesus. Cultural degradation is not unique to Protestant countries; it is a feature of what happens when countries are too comfortable materially.

Protestantism's rejection of authority, emphasis on personal revelation and individualism are the genesis of all of those things I mentioned.

In Protestantism, there is a fixed source of morality, but it can be interpreted in a billion different ways by a billion different individuals which absolutely neuters its theology and practice, and creates a gigantic vacuum where relativism grows.

If Pastor Joe says A is right, but Pastor Bill says B is right, is anything really right? Or is morality just a preference?

I'm sorry you believe all this is true. Must be a deep echo chamber you're trapped in.

Let's play a game. What was mainstream Protestant's opinion on artificial birth control 100 years ago, and now today.

Same for divorce and remarriage and the ordination of women.

We know what the answer will be. Then, tell me how the Holy Spirit moved among the Protestant faithful at the same exact time society's opinions on the subject changed.

I feel like this is picking at such extremes of the spectrum. Yes, obviously the conglomerate that Protestantism is known as and has become in the modern sense is something I also am not a fan of. As I have said on many other threads, I don't see how it is fair to lump in any modern progressive anti-pope churches into this big bucket and pretend like we all know each other but yet have different beliefs and come up with whatever personal revelation we want. Yes, there are heretical cults, but the majority do find common ground on the basics. All that said, I see no value or point in even maintaining a group called Protestants who are so far gone from the original intent.

These aren't heretical cults though, I'm not quoting the Westboro Baptist Church or Steven Anderson's coven, I'm talking about mainline Protestantism.

Strangely enough, the heretical cults actually haven't changed on women's ordination, divorce or birth control

Perhaps I am trying to understand why American "Christian nationalism" is such a problem for some here when it manifests so benignly compared to the brutal Russian subjugation of peoples they have conquered and why the Russian Orthodox hierarchy supports it.

For me personally, and I imagine this is probably shared with different groups and individuals

American Protestantism is so fractured divided and all over the place with some straight into lunacy (Christian Dispensationalism out other whacky prophetical groups) that I would never ever want it to have any influence on our government.

It would have the potential, depending on who's in charge, to be right up there with the Iranian Death Cult regime in nuttiness.

That's the nicest way I can put that unfortunately.

And you don't think that the Russian Orthodox hierarchy blessing Russian invasion troops is not nutty? Of course, now, Orthodox Russia is kidnapping Africans and employing atheistic North Koreans to fight for them.
And you call the Protestants whacky.
I won't even get into Roman Catholics supporting and blessing dictators like Francisco Franco or Benito Mussolini or any of the Latin American dictators.

You live in a basically Protestant-formed country here in the US. Be grateful for that fact, that Protestant Christian pioneers, soldiers, scientists and farmers offered up a society that was stable and prosperous who twice rescued the old Europe from its own follies and hatred of minorities. I have ancestors who fled France for Holland due to Catholic oppression.

Orthodox and Catholics emigrated by the millions to this (Protestant) country because the countries which embraced the Orthodox and Catholic cultures trapped their citizens in poverty and oppression. Protestants did not emigrate to Orthodox or Catholic countries.

As to Dispensationalism:

As an Orthodox convert I feel bad for my Protestant pioneers. Some of their writings show a genuine attempt at Christianity and I'm thankful for that but most of it is pure idolatry. I wish we had a real nation and it's no wonder our society has been nothing short of one big insane asylum for some time now. Overall it just sucks but I'm going to try to find some joy in this absurd closing act of America. I try and view our country in the same way the North American saints did and that was with love. With that said, I stand with what Patton mentioned about the enemies. Even a short look into events like Pearl Harbor show how dumb we are. Don't even start with 9/11.

Well, just enjoy and celebrate the bravery, courage and generosity of those Protestant pioneers driving out the hostile Indians and bringing the fruits of the land to full bloom so that Orthodox and Catholics could flee their oppressive homelands and find liberty and prosperity here. You might google the 2nd Great Awakening to glimpse how God touched these people and delivered them.

Yeah you might do the same for the fact that you aren't Muslim, when Catholic/Orthodox kings had to keep both the Moors and the Ottomans from conquering Christendom that Greco-Roman philosophy and culture as kept alive in the monasteries during the dark ages after the fall of Rome. The same people that brought you the Renaissance, the scientific method, beer, and everything else the first 1600 years of civilization cultivated before some random German monk thought "if random Catholic do bad thing how whole church not bad?" And started hacking off parts of the Bible he didn't like.

It is factually incorrect, and an absolute delusion.

Very serious. The (Protestant) US confronted the Barbary pirates and the US/UK/Australia have battled Islamic militancy abroad. Spain tucked tail and ran and other predominantly Catholic countries have shown little inclination to battle jihadists. In fact, it is Catholic and Orthodox Europe which should be thanking the US and its allies for holding the line against jihadists in the modern era.

Part of my lineage includes a family that came with the original 300 to Texas. They were ranchers which I consider to be one of the most important and defining identities of America. Something that we should go back to after everything falls. Some pioneers were generous and some were not. Many of them were crazy which makes sense given the risk. Further back I'm directly related to George Jacobs Sr. who was hanged at Salem by the Puritans for being a witch with zero proof.

I'm sure you know that Protestant history is not good guys vs bad guys. For centuries they hated each other and were never able to connect on what is true. That's obvious at the start of the reformation. There's no hierarchical structure for this nation to preserve identity. "We the people" is nothing but an idea stemming from centuries of developing the western individual. Hyper-liberalism tries to free people from any identity they inherited from family, culture, nation, etc. so they can invent themselves. What you get is a kind of manufactured state of nature, where everyone is a self-made identity rather than someone formed by the past. This is why Orthodoxy is growing. I see the same thing almost every weekend now. Families or individuals coming in and saying "we had no idea this existed". Western individuals having their mind blown that there is deep Christian history outside the west. All of a sudden their worldview is fractured because it's something they can't explain away.

Anyways none of this pioneer heritage stuck around. It's all faded to background news with your local Oktoberfest or rodeo. You can tell your kids stories and join a city or county historical society. I do these things because I enjoy Texas history. With that said, none of it comes close to participation in the Eucharist. I'm now connected to the Body of Christ and the historical knowledge that comes with it so I can learn this history and participate in the Church timeline. My nation is not baptized which is unfortunate. I wish our cities and towns had shared identities stemming from Orthodoxy. It would be alive instead of whatever this dissected body is.

I would love to hear your perspective.

It is very easy to just throw out an accusation.

I think if you're going to do that, you should explain the reality that you think I've blinded myself to.

My post summarized into into a concise statement would be:

Protestantism is two divided in order for there to be a staple Christian Nationalism in this country that had any influence on the government. That due to its fraction nature and the liberal friendly anyone can interpret anything anyway that they want to mentality that it would immediately be co-opted by the worst of the worst. James Takarico as I pointed out in another post is the perfect example of that. He is so palatable to enough of the Protestant population that he leads with his Preacher and God politics, as he personally sees them, and will probably become the first statewide held office by a democrat in three decades.

I love hearing intelligent, perspectives of people that I don't agree with necessarily as it helps me to understand the way that people think. If you would be willing to articulate your position rather than just throwing out useless one line sentences it might be a fascinating conversation.

I think he is either having an intellectual failure or he is just simply trolling as I honestly don't believe anyone can be that stupid or possess that level of cognitive dissonance.

Right off the bat these are the failures of people within all walks of life and not necessarily of the religion itself.

It's a terrible intellectual argument to make or even bring up as Protestantism has created the most fragmented divisive and combative form of Christianity that has ever existed.

It is worth acknowledging that all people of all Christian Faiths have fallen short.

The unfortunate fact is that division is the leading characteristic of the protestant faith and leads to the most amount of division and hatefulness

You can see that in his post. UTex has a lot going on internally. I've been there and that eventually led me to peace within the Orthodox Church.

You're attributing everything you don't like in America to Protestantism which is grossly oversimplistic and horribly wrong.

There are lots of Talaricos or worse in countries that are historically RCC. Having a standardized "doctrine" doesn't prevent insane politicians and insane political movements. Look at France, Spain, Italy, and all of the South and Central American countries. The RCC has been a prime factor in the lunacy that has historically gripped and still grips those countries.

I can't say much about countries that are historically EO because, truthfully, I don't know much about them. But what little I do know is that none of them can be held up as shining "cities on a hill" that demonstrate the wonderful influence that the EO has on societies and political systems. Like most centralized bureaucratic religious organizations, it appears that the EO leadership in a country or region "adapts" to fit the regime that controls that country or regime. Or do you truly believe that the Russian Orthodox Church is a model for all churches everywhere?

Once again, I would just ask you what authority do you possess to interpret the scripture accurately over someone like Talarico. He is reading the same scripture that you are and he is coming to a different belief.

My intention in pointing this out is not to say that he is correct.

My point is to say that this is the primary failing of Protestantism and the reason that it cannot work in the long run. It's a system that will forever and continually evolve in until eventually it is unrecognizable by its founders.

I generally like to point out that if Luther or Calvin or any of those guys could see the state of American Christianity they would not recognize any of you.

American Piper liberal Christianity simply mirrors, the social movements of this country and the way that people feel. Their feelings influence their interpretation of scripture.

This is a fact.

I don't want to live in a Protestant Dystopia.

Christ and America aren't the issue.

It's a lack of trust that Protestants could be successful. We would end up with Lesbian and Trans pastors as magistrates running our lives after it was co-opted because there is no firm Traditions and safe guards against insanity.

Wow. Truly unbelievable. You've blinded yourself to reality.

He is so palatable to enough of the Protestant population that he leads with his Preacher and God politics, as he personally sees them, and will probably become the first statewide held office by a democrat in three decades.

How do you interpret his success?

If there are non-Christian moderates or independents that are swaying his direction is because they find his social liberal form of Christianity palatable.

There are obviously many protestants who find his message palatable.

Again, so palatable that he is likely to become the states first statewide held office by a democrat in three decades.

While there are multiple ways to see this, I think it's a fairly significant Canary in the coal mine moment for Protestants. At least it should be.

Also, please remember to not really take the comment out of context.

I understand this thread is going all over the place.

My comment was directly related to why Christian nationalism is unpalatable in this country. If the Christian nationalism is Protestant as it is too un staple and unpredictable to know what form of protestant Christian nationalism we would receive.

Please keep the context

There are a bunch of people who claim to be Catholic who'll vote for Talarico.

This is true. It is one of the criticisms I have of the Catholic Church leadership and representation.

It's a bit of a pretzel, balancing immigration, social issues, and their Christian beliefs.

If you're a protestant and you're making the argument that it's OK because the Catholic Church does it then I find that equally fascinating.

The fact remains that there is a very bad version of a protestant preacher running for the Texas Senate and he is winning.

That should terrify Protestants.

If I were protestant and I truly believed in its tenants then people like Talarico would terrify me that they can so easily move the bar to crazy town.

In the Orthodox world, this is very difficult as it takes an incredible amount of unity and belief to move the core beliefs of the faith.

Even when the Church has erred (as we do not believe it to be infallible) we have the mechanisms and ability to walk it back, fairly easily with a top down structure.

In the protestant world since day one, it has been a consistent entropy and degradation. There is no mechanism to correct things when they go wrong.

There seems to be no way to walk back the errors when they occur, and they establish a foothold and create another division amongst the thousands of divisions that already exist.

I don't view this and revel in it as a non-protestant. I believe there are so many good hearted and well-intentioned protestants that I am very fearful for their children, their grandchildren, etc. as they will inherit an unrecognizable form of the Christian faith.

I am by no means arguing that it's OK.

I am arguing that your attribution of Talarico to Protestantism is ****oo.

Stalin attended a Russian Orthodox seminary for ~5 years in training to be a priest.

Again, you were either trolling or you were just ignorant of the facts here

It's a terrible attempt to applied guilt by association.

Stalin was sent to the seminary by his mother. Not out of any personal piety. He was sent there because it was the only form of higher education the family had access to.

He was expelled by the seminary for his belief system.

You literally just pointed out the way in which Orthodoxy successfully rejected heretical beliefs and its followers.
