This is sort of our "home church" since we can't get to Austin/St Elias often.

Sort of a status report on the rebuild, but gives some interesting images/virtual reality demonstration of the architecture/plans. Kind of incredible they got over $800 million in donations.

I always thought Sacre Coeur was prettier anyway, but to each his own.

Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City.

They keep the skulls of the saints in displays in the cathedral which is pretty metal.

Beautiful place

So, I stumbled upon St Sava in Belgrade being…completed?

https://fromplacetoplace.travel/serbiacat/belgrade/cathedral-of-st-sava/

https://www.panacomp.net/saint-sava-orthodox-cathedral-belgrade/

It's an interesting history, and looks beautiful, despite the…colorful and checkered past of the area. Photo's available at the gallery link below (caution; facebook, russia, etc.);

https://www.telegraf.rs/english/3272008-nikolai-mukhin-the-artist-who-decorated-the-temple-of-saint-sava-presented-with-a-medal

Now, while looking for pictures I came upon this story of the Serbian St Sava church in NYC having burnt in a fire a few years back. I believe it will be rebuilt, but wow, what a tragedy.

The one in Milwaukee looks quite stunning as well.

St. George Istanbul

Small, considering its location, but beautiful. Incredible relics including the remains of St Gregory and St. John Chrysostom.

Second pic is an icon painted by St Luke.

Been a few times to this little, but pretty church in Frenstat, TX. Holy Rosary Catholic Church

Got to check out the Minor Basilica of Immaculate Conception in Natchitoches, LA on a work trip.

Attended mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in DC last year as well.

Headed to Italy this year for a vacation, will get to see lots of churches in Rome/Vatican City and Florence, looking forward to that!

My family did a private tour in Rome with "The Catholic Traveler" (Mountain Buterac). If you can schedule even a half-day tour with him you will be very glad you did!! We saw more before lunch than most people see in three or four days on their own! Well worth the cost and he has all the right connections.

Best way to reach out to him is on instagram DM

A snotty way of begging a snobby question, but beautiful nonetheless.

For those who haven't played around with it, the virtual tour of the Vatican website is great.

Many cathedrals have good sites nowadays…

Ani, in Turkey would be an interesting place to visit.

Quote:

East of the Turkish city of Kars lies a complex of lonely medieval churches. Octagonal towers, crumbling walls, and fallen columns lay scattered across vast grasslands. In the gorge that drops away to the Akhuryan Riverwhich forms Turkey's border with the modern state of Armeniais an ancient bridge, broken in the middle.

These ruins are all that remain of Ani, the cosmopolitan capital of medieval Armenia, one of the earliest kingdoms to adopt Christianity as its state religion in the early A.D. 300s. The site of a fifth-century fortification, Ani was chosen to be Armenia's capital in the 10th century. It became home to as many as 100,000 people, and was so richly endowed with sacred buildings that it came to be known as the "city of 1,001 churches."

Its strategic position along trade routes between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea made it an attractive possession, condemning it to centuries of invasionand eventually, a long period of abandonment.

Quote:

Ani's cathedral was completed in A.D. 1001 by Trdat the Architect (who also reconstructed the damaged dome of the Hagia Sophia cathedral in Constantinople). Its ribbed vaulting would not be seen in European cathedrals until at least two centuries later. During Ani's sacking by the Seljuks in 1064, it was converted into a mosque; but returned to Christian usage in 1124. Its dome was destroyed in the earthquake of 1319.
