yes, you can. it's the only possibility that makes any sense.

the reason he didn't tell anyone was because he was an undercover cop, which was also clearly evident on DeCaprio's face once he realized it.

I liked the movie, but I don't understand some of the character's motivations behind their actions.

Why did Matt Damon's character tell the cops the actual location of the drug deal that was going down that lead to Costello's death? Was he purposely turning against his boss?

So I finally watched this movie today. I also watched Little Miss Sunshine for the second time today. After seeing them both, I'm definitely pulling for LMS to win Best Picture next week, but I wouldn't be disappointed to see The Departed win as it's a pretty solid second for me.

Combo of two things.

1. His boss was informant for the Feds. Damon was pretty scared that Costello would give him up at the drop of a hat.

2. Costello wasn't listening to Damon's advice anymore ("laying low is not what I do". He was too reckless and it was clear it was only a matter of time before his actions exposed Damon as a criminal.

Trapping Costello gave Damon a great opportunity to off him.

If this movie doesn't win best picture tonight they should stop making movies all together.

its a great film, but Letters from Iwo Jima is more superior film IMHO. Also, dont be surprised to see Little Miss Sunshine win it this year.

I perceived the references to the state capitol to be imply that Damon has higher career ambitions than just being a cop.

After watching the movie this weekend, I was anxious to see what clip would be played on the Oscars for Wahlberg...since I couldnt' immediately recall 10 seconds of his dialogue that didn't have a couple of f bombs. Fortunately, they found just enough. I agree that his character didn't get near enough time, but I'm not sure what else could've been added.

I also thought the moment when Leo and Damon were on the cell phone for the first time and neither wanted to be the first to speak was greatness.

This would've made a great TV series.

The fact that he doesn't have one yet will win him the award, not to mention he has made the best movie of the year EASILY.

He won this solely on the comment last year by Jon Stewart.

"For those of you who are keeping score at home, I just want to make something very clear: Martin Scorsese, zero Oscars; Three 6 Mafia, one."

He may have made a great film, but this definitely ensured he won.

Too many questions at the end of this movie for my taste.

Why did Leo not track down Marky Mark himself? Would have been much easier, he knew he could trust him and MM was eaiser to find as he was sittin on his can suspended.

I figure that would have been the most logical play for leo's character - go to the one guy you know you can trust.

Other things that were problematic for me in this movie:

- Jack just did not come off as a hardass mobster to me. More like a mentally disturbed mobster. Is that b/c the motion picture medium has created a stereotype for the mobster role? Perhaps, but he did remind me of his joker performance

- really would have liked to see where the envelope ended up and see the srink open it

- also would have liked for the love triangle parties to all figure out who was with who and just who each person really was

- I felt like i really did not know Matt D's characters motivation for doing what he was doing. By the end of the movie I felt like he did all this for nothing...

All that said, it was a hard movie to hate or dismiss as a bad movie. There were numerous great things about this movie

- the cell phone conversation - greatness
- marky mark's performance
- Alec Baldwins performance (great when beating the bug guy)
- the whole suspense of the love triangle
- plot twists that kept you guessing
- the music/score
- setting/southie accents

Nice catch on the symbolisim of the milk/eggs at the end of the movie...

Don't have answers for all your questions, but did you see his condo and the kind of life he was leading? Plus, he had been in with Costello since childhood -- what happens if he remains a cop but just tries to cut the cord with Costello? The only way to get out of it (like he suggested to the girlfriend) was to move away and start a completely new life without all the perks he had previously enjoyed.

I want to know Whitey Bulger's opinion on the Oscar. Let him come out of hiding to say something, then go back into hiding.

If there was ever a movie that deserved the audience standing up and chanting "OVER-RATED".... this movie is it.

Character development?? What development? The characters were EXACTLY THE SAME at the end of the movie as the were at the beginning, minus the lead head.

Perhaps it's just because I've seen this movie done FAR better when it was called Donnie Brascoe.

Maybe I misspelled it, but I remembered it. Which I won't The Departed, other than it being "that movie Jack played the mob dude."

What stood out about this movie? Seriously.

Leo didn't go to Markie Mark himself because he intended to kill Damon himself, he told him that on the elevator ride down. Getting the message to Markie Mark was just a back up plan in case something like what happened to him happened.

Movie was very good, but not Goodfellas or Godfather (but what is?!)
My wife hated it - she also hated Goodfellas and the Godfathers.
Only problems I had
First - Nicholson would never have let a former cop in his crew - "Are you still a cop? ARE YOU STILL A COP?!!!
Second - Why would Leo go see a shrink whose primary patients were other cops? Way too many chances to get busted - by another cop or by Damon himself.

It was part of his probation to see a therapist, and as a former cop who broke the law and went to prison, it would make sense that he would see her.
