Didn't Shakespear In Love (or something like that) win over Saving Private Ryan?
Quinn

i dont know about worst ever, but the departed was defiently overrated. i thought children of men should have been best picture this year.

I haven't seen them all, but of the ones I have seen I'd say Crash is worst followed closely by The English Patient. Chariots of Fire was pretty weak too.

I thought Children of Men had great cinematography, but the story could have been much tighter, and would have had to have been to be considered for best picture.

The oscar was more of a lifetime achievement for Scorsese.
You're right though the movie was very mediocre with only a few good scenes.
Most overrated movie of all time in my mind.
Remember The Astrodome

When I was told Crash won I said you have to be kidding me, that is the worst movie ever. That person replied, "but it has a great message". I have yet to see the Departed but was kid of looking forward to it, but after reading some of these comments, that has faded.

While I do think The Departed was (very slightly) overrated, it's not even in the same category as Crash.

The fact that Crash was nominated for, much less won best pic is a travesty. What a terrible, trite movie.

Now the thing that I call livin' is just bein' satisfied with knowin' I got no one else to blame

Very similar to Denzel's best actor for Training Day.

LOVED Crash....hmmmm.

I would have to say Forest Gump, how that beat out Shawshank is beyond me. I even thought Pulp Fiction and Four Weddings and a Funeral were better. And even though I have seen the movie at least 50 times if not more I would stop on Shawshank over Gump when channel surfing anyday of the week.

Ben Hur rocked! What an awesome movie...

English Patient is worst ever! God, what a boring movie.

Others I did not like:

English Patient
Shakespeare in Love
The Greatest Show on Earth (this may be the worst)
American Beauty
Enrico Pallazzo

English Patient was the worst IMO. But Crash certainly isn't very far behind. The main "plus" Crash has over EP is that it was an hour shorter.

Opinions are like ass holes...

Forrest Gump is my favorite in the last 20 years.

Shakespeare in Love by a longshot.

Departed is a consolation to the director who gave us so many CLASSICS.

Crash beat out: Munich, Capote, Goodnight and Goodluck, and Brokeback Mountain.

IMO, Crash is the best movie out of the lot(Munich is a close second).

I'm also voting for Crash.

Crash was a good movie, but it was one of those 4-star NBC family movies that come on Saturday night. It did not deserve credit beyond that.

I kind of have a problem with Braveheart winning, but it won in a very weak year for best picture nominees...

I think you're alone on Braveheart. The movie is greatness.

I would say a tie between Chicago and Titanic.

Couldn't even get through Chicago, it was so bad.

"worst" appears to mean "not to my taste."

So I will stick with Ben-Hur and all other movies of a gladiatorial nature where the male leads walk around bare legged and covered in oil that makes their skin shine.

Crash was an ok ensemble piece. Chicago was a musical and not bad for the genre, if you like them. Shakespeare in Love was an English period piece that did not try to make the limeys out to be all noble.

The English Patient was an interesting take on the idea that cheating on a friend with his wife can have some bad consequences.

Braveheart was sort of a Ben-Hur with a bunch of drunk Scots. Good enough for that kind of film but not to my taste, although I do admire Gibson's constant ethnic slurs on the English throughout his career.

Chicago was miserable

Crash was a better movie when it was about people having sex at car crashes

Well I personally think that performance was one of his best so I dont think they're the same thing.

I have no problem at all with Crash winning. Very good movie and none of the other four - Capote, Munich, Brokeback or Good Night, Good luck were as entertaining.

No way should Chicago have beaten The Pianist.

I think Greatest Show on Earth is the worst by far.

While I like Rocky a lot, I don't think it deserved to win given the amazing competition that year (All the Presidents Men, Taxi Driver, Network).

I think THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH won because DeMille had been around since silent movies and the Academy figured he was at the end of his career. He hung up his guns after directing THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (he also directed the silent version).

THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH might have won because it was in color and had lots of spectacle going for it. This was when tv was starting to erode the movie audiences and big, un, make that BIG movies were a tactic to win audiences back.
