Damn. I didn't realize it was only in 800 theaters this weekend with no plans yet to go wider. 600+ theaters is officially considered wide, but 2000-3000+ is a true wide rollout. I though it was closer to the latter…

Quote:

Because 800 locations is considered a wide theatrical release for a documentary feature, any further theater expansions will depend strictly on its box office performance and per-theater averages following its opening weekend.

That said, I could definitely see this being a big money-maker, relatively speaking, so hopefully it earns that wider rollout, and soon.

That's my thought. I absolutely want to and will see this. But 3 hours?? Yeah I'm not going to the theatre and watching a ****ing 3 hour documentary

Probably going to go see this tomorrow afternoon depending on how my day shakes out. Just happen to be going right by a theater playing it for some other business.

Guys, it flies by. The theater was more than half full for a 3 PM weekday showing and I don't remember seeing a single person leave to pee. You're riveted the entire time. It maybe hits a tiny bit of lull right before the midpoint, but once you realize what the second half is going to be you can't look away, and by the third act it *almost* even feels like a thriller at times.

Idc, was just surprised to see that run time. There's only one ticket sold in the showing in looking at so I can just take a leak in the middle of the theatre anyways. Won't have to miss anything.

Whatever you're doing stop and go see this movie ASAP.

My jaw is on the ****ing floor right now.

I'm not going to call it a "twist," but the second half isn't in the trailers at all, and is almost assuredly about to be spoiled all over social media, at least in the film world. Normally, I would have seen this on a Friday or Saturday night, but the friends I saw it with could only do 3 PM today - the very first public showing - and I was kind of pissed that I wouldn't be seeing it in a sold-out, prime-time, Friday-or-Saturday-night environment.

I've never been more happy to be so wrong.

Because what this ultimately turns into is just... next level. And two words would have spoiled the whole damn thing.

I'm not exaggerating when I say there's a 20-30 minute sequence in the third act that gave me a feeling I basically only ever get from the third acts of Christopher Nolan movies; that almost levitating, in-awe, how-the-hell-did-he-pull-this-off feeling. Except this is a documentary, which makes the feat all the more impressive. One that's partly taking place in Bryan, Texas, of all places, which makes it all the more surreal.

I fully realize that I'm likely overhyping it (and to be clear, the third act isn't some giant spectacle), but literally everyone I saw it with thought it was a "masterpiece," while everyone coming out of the theater was smiling / clearly blown away as well. It's just so damn funny, weird, and revealing, while slowly but surely becoming one of the best documentaries I've ever seen. In fact, it will absolutely be the first documentary in history be nominated for Best Picture. Hell, I might even have it as my personal Best Picture winner.

Just… holy *****

Nathan Fielder is a god.

Seriously, after this he might now be one of the great entertainers of our time. To the point where the word "entertainer" doesn't even do him justice.

I can't wait for everyone else to see this, but after you do PLEASE don't spoil it here. I say we give everyone at least a week if not more, seeing as it's still not wide wide in theaters yet.

It's been spoiled for a month but I can't wait to see it

I'm sure it has been. Point is, the masses are seeing it now, as opposed to just the festival goers, so it's going to be way harder to avoid.

This really does feel like it's about to blow up and become a whole thing. Like a genuine pop culture phenomenon. Like The Matrix of documentaries in terms of how buzzy and unprecedented it might be. I can't stop thinking about it, already want to see it again this weekend, and I just keep seeing post after post like the ones below. Dozens and dozens of them, so many more with language that I can't post here…

All of this to say, DO NOT wait for streaming. Not just because of the spoilers, but because of the audience experience. I can't remember a movie that's both this funny and this riveting, where the audience is basically fluctuating between laughing and gasping throughout. It's just such a fun, poignant, unique experience and, again, mine was only a half-full middle-of-a-weekday showing. If I can, I think I'm going to try and find a Friday or Saturday night packed-house showing.

I thankfully got to see this unspoiled, and it was incredible. But the "twist" didn't really surprise me at all... because it's exactly what I've come to expect from one of Canada's top business school graduates.

Was looking for showtimes for this movie y'all are discussing.

Saw there is a Musk documentary. Haven't heard about.

It's four freaking hours long? Can that be correct?

Part of it was like Nathan For You.
A big part of it was like The Rehearsal.
A tiny part was even like The Curse.

So I would say no!! (But it was great)

Only one (of quite a few) in my city playing it. At least it's my go to place.

I'm genuinely starting to think that this could actually win Best Picture. The Odyssey feels almost boring and cliched next to it as the current front-runner / closest prospect. There's just something happening here that I don't think I've ever seen before, especially for a documentary - this level of universal praise / obsession / word of mouth. It's obviously not going to do Top Gun: Maverick numbers, but that's the last movie I remember catching on like this. Though, speaking of obsession, I could maybe see it doing what Obsession did earlier this year, numbers-wise, if A24 takes it wide enough, considering the audience pool for this is potentially so much bigger. I tried to get tickets for it again this weekend, at a more popular theater, and it's sold out everywhere. Just nothing left. Word of mouth is only going to explode from there, and I wonder if, in the end, considering a documentary has never even been nominated for BP before, the Academy is going to be able to ignore how much general audiences love this thing. But I think its novelty in that regard is going to be undeniable. Enough to actually take the win? We shall see…

IMO, if someone hasn't previously enjoyed Nathan's work, they almost assuredly won't like this. Again, it's very much a three-hour episode of The Rehearsal.

Now, I will say that Nathan isn't quite as needling/antagonistic here. Yes, he's always trying to get reactions out of Holmes & co, but for whatever reason he comes across as a bit more subtle/reserved/human here (though his confrontations with Elizabeth's husband are hilarious). Also, Holmes' inclusion may be interesting enough to overcome the Nathan factor for people who don't care for him. She's so utterly fascinating throughout. Like observing an alien. That and, again, her husband steals the show, to the point where you can't help but actively root for Nathan against him.

So… maybe? It's hard to say. It's very, very much a Nathan Fielder production, but there are also a number of elements that change the dynamics enough that someone might not be as annoyed with him as they usually are? He really has met his match with Holmes, and I can't underline enough how much the husband outdoes even her.
