I wanted more from this scene as well, but this explanation at least makes sense...

Quote:

The problem is that there's a power imbalance between Scylla and Odysseus's crew. It's hard to show a prolonged confrontation because there's simply no possible fight. That's why the Scylla and Charybdis passage is very short in the poem too. If you made it last longer, consistency would have required the entire crew to be wiped out. It's also worth saying that this episode doesn't add much to the film's message, so it makes sense that Nolan didn't give it much screen time.

Makes sense but I think the FX for this were a bit lame as well. It looked like someone with a green sock on their arm was reaching down and plucking those dudes up.

Yeah... I had absolutely no idea what was going on. I haven't read the Odyssey in 25 years. I feel like this movie assumes the viewer has some knowledge of the Odyssey.

Agreed. I didn't know what those appendages were supposed to be. Like, was each a mouth/face, were they simply tentacles of the same brain... I couldn't tell. That was the only scene I was a bit disappointed in.

The feral looking Telemachus is strong! He put that guy 10ft up the wall with that spear.

And Eric Roberts... the original Matthew McConahey. They could be brothers.

Ok yeah this was the loudest movie I've ever experienced in a theater. Full imax at 10pm showing Tuesday night and I'm rocking in my chair at ever boat scene. Usually I'm disappointed a little knowing that I will play it louder at home. Not here. Good lord. Ludwigasms all over the place. Peak Nolan aggressive sound.

This version clears Nolan's by a mile, at least for the reveal/revenge climax. The tension build-up was better, it was framed better, and the acting was better. Free to watch on Prime.

7/10 movie. Nolan needs a butcher as part of his post team; spent too much time on unneeded scenes, and not enough on others considering source material. He also needs to fire his current script supervisor because - cringe. Still a beast when it comes to framing, large-scale staging, and sound, but man, this movie was exactly what I thought it would be based on the trailers. Was hoping he'd prove me wrong. He didn't. Fair to middling as part of his filmography.

Hathaway killed though. She was awesome.

Saw it this morning with my wife in IMAX.

I thought it was fine. Some really cool scenes for sure.. if you're seeing it IMAX, consider bringing earplugs the sound level was so intense.

I've read The Odyssey, like we all did, in high school. Didn't really care that it drifted from the original source material. I'm pretty far right, so seeing Ellen/Elliot Page was weird, but I also don't really care? Nor do I care that Lupita N'yongo was Helen of Troy. Would I have preferred a smoking hot blonde or brunette? Sure. But don't see why it matters. It's a movie.

I love Christopher Nolan so I'd give it like an 8. Probably won't watch again, but glad I saw it in theaters on the biggest and loudest screen I could.

I would also add that, at least in the case of Odysseus' crew, the colorblind casing at least made it easier to discern all of these bearded, sometimes helmeted soldiers from one another. His second-in-command is the Indian guy, got it. The ring belonged to the hefty Black guy who died in the cave. Oh no, the Asian guy fell for the sirens! This is in contrast to Dunkirk, where I remember really having a tough time keeping track of who was who. That's not to say that there should've been a multiracial group of soldiers in Dunkirk, but for this movie that's dealing in myth rather than historical fact, I don't see any any harm whatsoever.
Dude I never considered this angle but that is really really good!

Compare it to Black Hawk Down…other than Tom Seizmore (cause he's a bit fat) it's really hard to tell who's who cause it's all skinny white guys with no facial hair and buzz cuts wearing uniforms and helmets….

Really really good point!

Thought it was really good but didnt blow me away. The movie was stunning to look at but also so incredibly loud. My ears were ringing at points during the movie.

Some of it also felt a bit rushed after a slow start. Wish they had some more screen time with the sirens and scylla

Lastly, the casting was a little strange for some of the roles. Tom Holland was kinda meh and the blind man, i couldnt get past the voice of John Leguizamo and king of sparta John Bernthal

8/10

Saw it in 70mm IMAX. First time seeing a movie in that format and I'm really confused on how that was decided as the gold standard aspect ratio for movies. It's just so square relative to a person's field of vision. It did produce a really pleasant theatre experience though. Didn't hear any talking by an audience member, didn't see any phones, and didn't really even notice anyone getting up to leave the theatre; everyone was there to watch it.

Movie was good, not sure anything in it matched the Dune 3 preview at the beginning of it though, wow that was awesome.

That's an unintended benefit of watching movies in IMAX. Everyone there shelled out at least $30 so it's understood that everyone not mess up the viewing experience. **** is expeeeeensive.

My 14 year old son enjoyed it quite a lot. We were in the car talking about the movie for about 10 mins, and then he said, I'm not sure I'm going to be able to sleep after that Other Mommy trailer though.

Yeah $34/ticket. Even those with the top Regal pass had to pay full price. The projector at this theatre was also down for about 5 days, it got fixed on Thursday so I think everyone was likely thankful for that as well.

Finally got to see it today. I had tickets opening night but was too sick to go. I haven't read anything on the thread in several days, so I apologize if I'm leaching anyone else's thoughts/questions.

My overall impression puts it on par with The Dark Knight Rises in my Nolan rankings. Several really cool sequences and performances, but felt sloppy in a lot of spots and distracted from the great stuff.

Positives
Anne Hathaway - dominant performance; easily the best actor in the movie. Hope she gets an Oscar nod; she was ridiculously commanding in every scene and made me want to get back to Ithaca instead of taking the tour of the islands.
The brutal truth of the sacking of Troy
Seeing some of the suitors start kneeling for Odysseus during the final fight. That was a really cool effect when you started seeing them among the guys still trying to off him.
The soundtrack. The use of ancient instruments was a gorgeous choice. Even my daughter who was 90% there for Tom Holland and 10% there for eating candy at 11 a.m on a Sunday noticed it.

Frustrations
At least for my memories, the sirens are every bit as iconic as Polyphemus from the Odyssey. The sequence felt like it belonged in the 1997 Armand Assante version; you kind of see them from a distance?

I got tired watching Odysseus lead the blind charge back to the boat - against the Giganto Knights, against the Cyclops, and in Hades.

I don't understand why we had to wait until the last 15 minutes to see how he felt about what happened in Troy; it seems like that have been presented much earlier in the movie to give him a lot more empathy from the audience.

Odysseus fights off 60 guys, but Robert Pattison isn't one of them. Pattison had been physical throughout the movie and showed no signs of being a coward until the very end. The non-stop action fight against a zillion guys works for Batman, but not for Odysseus.

Epic Moment of Confusion
Has it been discussed or did anyone else notice Holland slip out of his American accent into straight British English when he first walked into the banquet hall with Odysseus behind him? I can't remember the line but it was odd it made it in the movie.

I agree Pattinson's character was a bit too weak in that last act, made it hard to have ever really viewed him as a threat. But he was definitely cowardly throughout the movie. Him making Sinon take his place in the war was a huge part of the movie, and then he came pretty close to killing Tom Holland in a cowardly way that night Odysseus got back.

Helen was ugly as hell with her scars. I guess I missed how she got those. I don't recall Helen of Troy being scarred. This a Nolan thing?

Yeah its clear that he was always a coward. I think his skill isn't combat, but in making people do what he wants them to do. So he was in control of the suitors, but it was clear he wasn't the muscle. Anytime he threatened Holland's character, it was really another suitor doing the heavy lifting.

My takeaway on this (I could be wrong); during the destruction of Troy, he first realizes he has those feelings, but perhaps its the 10-yr journey home that really puts in into perspective for him. and in typical Nolan fashion, he wants there to be a gut punch/weighty portion of the final act, and with him finally being home, finally talking to his wife, he puts it all into his final perspective that this was something he knew deep inside when it was happening, but the experience of the last 10-yrs and finally being home brought it all home for him.

I kind of agree with you there. I realize he's remembering as he goes along, but his remorse was still much later, when he's finally back home. I feel like at least some of that could have been hinted towards, or revealed in Hades...so you understood why Athena kept telling him he didn't want to go home, and why he's being punished. It makes sense now, but it did seem out of place, to be told he doesnt want to go home, as he's facing deadly mythical creatures over and over again, in an effort to go home.

And I didnt really think it was some huge reveal or twist. Throughout the movie he justified acting outside of their customs/laws. He's so concerned with violating Zeus' law with that one act...but all the other forms of killing/plundering was ok? It didn't really land with me.

I thought he was shown to be a coward the whole time...even from a boy. But more of a devious coward, than a shivering one.

I did chuckle though, has he continually yelled out to 'get' whatever was thrown through the ceiling. Swords fall...'get the swords!'...shields fall: "Get the Shields"...spears fall; "The Spears!" I think it would have been more fitting if he'd have calmly directed his guys from a safe vantage point, instead of shivering behind a column and yelling out the names of weapons. That seemed more like the type of coward he was the majority of the movie.

Ellen Page was a nothing burger. She sounded like a woman trying to do a guys' voice, but her part in the movie was fine. Not bad, not good...just a part.

A few minor complaints, but overall, I thought the movie was pretty dang good. It's not on the level of Braveheart or Gladiator, like some were making it out to be...but I hope Hollywood starts to put out more movies like this again.

He wasn't facing mythical creatures in an attempt to get home. He was doing those things to protect his men or on trips to get supplies and what not.

That was the twist. He didn't follow Agamemnon who was taking the most direct route, because he didn't want to go home. His men start realizing this and they leave him to hunt on Circe's island because they see his sabotage and poor judgement.

He only does what he does after Hades to try and save his men. And that is why he stays so long with Calypso, because he doesn't want to go home,/he can't face himself.

It's definitely a change from the poem, but the breadcrumbs are there from the beginning of the movie.
