I kind of agree with you there. I realize he's remembering as he goes along, but his remorse was still much later, when he's finally back home. I feel like at least some of that could have been hinted towards, or revealed in Hades...so you understood why Athena kept telling him he didn't want to go home, and why he's being punished. It makes sense now, but it did seem out of place, to be told he doesnt want to go home, as he's facing deadly mythical creatures over and over again, in an effort to go home.

And I didnt really think it was some huge reveal or twist. Throughout the movie he justified acting outside of their customs/laws. He's so concerned with violating Zeus' law with that one act...but all the other forms of killing/plundering was ok? It didn't really land with me.

I thought he was shown to be a coward the whole time...even from a boy. But more of a devious coward, than a shivering one.

I did chuckle though, has he continually yelled out to 'get' whatever was thrown through the ceiling. Swords fall...'get the swords!'...shields fall: "Get the Shields"...spears fall; "The Spears!" I think it would have been more fitting if he'd have calmly directed his guys from a safe vantage point, instead of shivering behind a column and yelling out the names of weapons. That seemed more like the type of coward he was the majority of the movie.

Ellen Page was a nothing burger. She sounded like a woman trying to do a guys' voice, but her part in the movie was fine. Not bad, not good...just a part.

A few minor complaints, but overall, I thought the movie was pretty dang good. It's not on the level of Braveheart or Gladiator, like some were making it out to be...but I hope Hollywood starts to put out more movies like this again.

Well...sort of.

Throughout the movie he disagrees vehemently with the idea he doesn't want to go home, and is fighting fate at every turn to save his men (even when he has to be their savior, again, against Circe). Yes, they're stopping there for provisions...but it's all supposedly for their journey home. So I dont really see the distinction.

I understand what's trying to be conveyed. But it all seems pretty played out before he reveals his regret at the end. To me, it seemed a bit anticlimactic of a 'twist'.

It was pretty funny.

A random guy was sitting next to me, and when they threw the last items down (I think the spears), he says, 'Get the Spears!'....right before Pattinson said it again. Made me chuckle, because I was thinking the same thing.

Loved:
The experience with the sound in this one made a huge difference. This was the first movie I've seen in theaters since Conclave (two years ago). This difference between watching this in a theater vs at home with my crappy setup is night and day. My seat was shaking. I loved it.

The visuals were fantastic. The fight scenes well done, IMO.

The scene with the Cyclops was phenomenal and had me intensely focused. Pacing and storytelling there was great IMO.

Hathaway, Theron, Patel, and Morton (Circe) were all excellent in their roles IMO.

Tolerated but question:
Tom Holland is getting stale and seems to play the same guy in every movie. His acting seemed wooden and dispassionate, especially in the opening scenes. His character just felt "off" a bit. It was like he was just reading his lines.

Loathed:
Out of all the casting controversy, the one guy who really felt miscast was Leguizamo. He was not believable. IMO this role needed an Oliver Reed-type who could play off the complexities of the old wise character while not sounding like he just got off the subway in Queens.

At times, the script was either wooden or over-modern and took away from the story. Telemachus referring Odysseus as "my dad" was annoying. Not sure why it frustrated me so much, but use the word "father" for crying out loud. The film I kept comparing this to in my mind was Gladiator and I think the script/dialogue in that one blew The Odyssey out of the proverbial water.

I thought I was watching Roger Rees as the Sherrif of Rottingham in Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

Just saw this at IMAX last night and I thought it was great!! It's not on the level of Inception (which is my favorite Nolan movie), but far and away the best movie I've seen in a looooong time.

The scene in the cave with the cyclops was INSANELY loud. I had to plug my ears at that scene and the scene on the water during the storm. But the scene in the cave was probably my favorite. The scene with Circe literally made me gag as it looked like the seafood was forcefully crawling down the mens' throats. I despise seafood, so that's partly why.

I went into this having never read the Odyssey or the Iliad, so pardon my ignorance if this has already been answered....was Helen of Troy the same person as Clytemnestra? I thought she or Menelaus said something about her having a twin sister, so I wasn't sure. It sounded like Helen of Troy was with Agamemnon first and when he came back from war she killed him as revenge for sacrificing their daughter. But then later she was with Menelaus which was Agamemnon's brother. So was it two different women (twin sisters), or did Menelaus marry her after she killed Agamemnon? I was thoroughly confused.

And where did the scar on her face come from? Had she always had that, or did she get it as some sort of punishment for killing Agamemnon?

It's complicated. Leda, Clytemnestra's mother, was impregnated by Zeus (in the form of a swan) and by her mortal husband Tyndareus separately on the same night. Some telling say that Leda then laid two eggs, with the Zeus egg hatching Helen and Pollux and the mortal egg hatching Clytemnestra and Castor. So kind of twins, kind of half-sisters, kind of clutch mates, and all sorts of mythological shenanigans.

As for the scar, I think that's a Nolan invention. Probably meant to have some meaning as to how wars leave scars, but I think it was in part so viewers could tell the two characters apart.

That's what I thought. But why would she have been punished for that since it was her sister that killed Agamemnon?

Nolan was trying to make an epic film out of one of the most famous works of all time. Nolan's movie tried to cover most of what happens in Homer's work. Not just to be an action packed film. As it was, much had to be left out.

He (and his men) spent a year living with Circe the witch in the poem, and that didn't happen in the film. And a lot of Odysseus' interaction with the Greek gods was also left out, as well as his stops at other islands.

I think it was a very well made movie myself, and did a mostly great job of retelling Homer's Odyssey.

I wonder if Nolan would now go and try to make a film of The Iliad, in which he could also use Damon as Odysseus. And Agamemnon and Helen of Troy.

I really wanted to watch The End of Oak Street and be home by 9pm and got talked into watching the Odyssey and getting home around 10pm.
That extra hour was haunting me throughout the movie. Very similar experience with Avatar 2 while the Ags were playing football.
