Today's the day.

And yes, for two reasons, this is a "spoiler thread" for the movie adaptation of a 3,000-year-old book...

1) Nolan's telling takes certain liberties in how the story is told, apparently jumping back-and-forth both in time and in plot-lines that are, surprise surprise, presented more elaborately than the book. Also, Nolan has added certain scenes, omitted others, etc. Thus, how Nolan tells the story can be considered just as much as, if not more of a spoiler, than the events of the book itself.

2) This thread is primarily for discussing the actual contents of the movie/plot itself, by people who have actually seen the movie, as opposed to culture war complaining/arguing. I'm sure the latter will inevitably come up, but there were multiple requests in the other thread for a fresh, movie-discussion-only thread, so here we are.

As for me, I'll see you guys back here Saturday night, after, at long last, I finally see this thing for myself...

Rating: A-

This movie is epic. Saw it in 1.85 and didn't feel like I missed out on anything, although it did make me curious to see the 70MM version. The casting issues to me are all way overblown and minor, although the Page stuff does harm the film. I'm not one who cares at all about the proper uniforms, sail boat structure, or dialect, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt if that's your cup of tea. I also didn't have any sound issues like are being reported

Loved:
- Performances of Holland, Hathaway, Pattinson, and Damon were great, as was the performance of Patel to a lesser extent. Pattinson especially. He weaved between charming and menacing throughout in an impressive way
- Cyclops scene - loved the way the tension was built and how dire it felt. I wish it was longer as it could have ratcheted up the tension even more
- Trojan Horse scene was intense
- the relationship between Holland and Leguizamos character was great, as was the dog
- Time hopping narrative - I personally enjoyed the peeling back of details through the different time hops and when it comes together, man does it hit. The ending scenes during the challenge are the best in the film IMO
- Cinematography - there are some beautiful shots in this film

Liked:
- The witch scene - overall this whole sequence was great, but I think it is being overblown. The acting has several bad parts mixed with great parts taking it down a notch for me. Still worked great and makes you squirm in your seat
- The whirlpool scene - loved the cinematography and the brutalness of the attacks, but felt it could have been longer. It all happened too quickly leaving me wanting more
- The Zendaya "reveal" at the end was clever and salvaged that character

Did not like:
- Elliot Page was a distraction every time on screen. Put another actor in that position and it elevates the movie. The final line with the closeup was eye rolling to me
- Zendaya is the weakest link acting wise, but it's sort of explained by who she ends up representing
- Hades scene was a little off to me

In short, go see the movie, it is excellent despite the flaws.

Did the American accents and modern dialogue take away from the weight or gravity of the scenes, in your opinion?

I just have a feeling hearing the "Let's goooooo!" and "**** off!" will take me out of the scene.

Not to me, but I see where some people would gripe on it. It's just such a minor thing in the grand scheme of the movie that it didn't bother me. The let's go scene plays way better in context than the clips shown.

Dropping in just to say no need to use spoiler tags here. The effort is appreciated, especially before most people have seen the movie, but it's not necessary.

The "Let's goooooo!!!" is completely out of context in the trailer, and was really stupid to put into the trailer. In the actual movie, it's a nothing line and you don't even notice it. Putting it into the trailer the way they did made it become a big controversy.

Going into the movie, I was most worried about the dialogue taking me out of the movie, but in the end, the American accents and modern dialogue did not bother me at all. In fact, I would rather they do it this way than have someone with a fake accent.

Agree on the dialogue/modern English. Was fine with me.

The epic scenes along his journey with his men were so well done. I could watch about 4 or 5 of those scenes 20 times over.

Things I loved:

1. The Trojan Horse scene. For what ever reason, I've never really thought about what it would have been like to be in the horse. Having to stay completely silent while they move the horse in. I also liked that they had the Trojan warrior shove his sword into it to check if anyone was inside. It makes the Trojans look less like dumbasses.

2. I thought Anne Hathaway and John Leguizamo were both great. Also the lady who played Circe. I wouldn't be surprised if any of them, or all three, get Oscar nods.

3. The soundtrack was fantastic, especially the drum beats during the Battle of Troy.

Things I didn't like:

1. Elliot Page. Not only was Page way too small next to all of the other soldiers, but I felt like Page was also a terrible actor in this. Really the only miscasting in the whole thing.

2. It should have been either half an hour shorter or an hour longer and split into two movies. I felt like they really drew out some scenes, and then last half of his journey (before he got home) was just bang, bang, bang. Sirens, Whirlpool and Scylla. They just flew right through those.

Overall, I loved the movie. I don't think it's going to be remembered as an all-time great, but it's really good and will probably end up making a billion dollars.

I didn't watch any trailers and just saw the movie and have no idea what you're talking about so I guess it's probably a non issue.

The movie is very intense from beginning to end. Loved how everything wraps up together when he gets back to Ithaca. My least favorite scene was the witch/pigs. Too much of a pans labrynth vibe for me. Overall for a Nolan Film I probably say B+

I'm not sure but definitely appeared to be a woke ethnic liberal canine.

And the way they wrote his character too... Laying around all day hoping for scraps. Getting in the way of others and causes fights, then at the end they give him some glorious send-off even though he just layed there the whole time.

Completely ruined the movie for me. SMH

But really, that dog scene killed me. Maybe the most emotional scene of the movie? Sure, many many many humans had died up to that point, but the dog dying was what was sad.

Accurate.

You can show a scene where a gazillion people get killed and its no big deal.

Let a dog die though, and the entire feeling of the movie changes.

I mean, it worked for John Wick.

The culmination of the dog and Telemachus realizing it was Odysseus was classic Nolan.

Also, I would say I'm a greek mythology/Odyssey novice and that's probably being generous.

That said, I can't help but wonder if some of the first act issues people seemed to have with not really knowing who all the characters were, what their roles were, and the general 'messiness' some have mentioned was intentional to mirror the effects Odysseus was going through as he tried to regain his memory of his men, his family, and his home. As the movie progressed, at least to me, all the various people began to make complete sense as to their spot in the story.

Maybe it was just coincidence but I wouldn't put it past Nolan to have made that an intentional decision.

I had seen the 90s mini series Oddyssey so I faintly remembered the gist of it.

I also watched Troy but that threw me off more than it helped because I always thought Menaleus died in battle and Helen ran off with Legolas.

my take:

for context - not a complete Nolan fanboy but respect him.

It was ....fine.
What I did not like:
first half very choppy. with that said, there is A LOT to cover. Saw 4 different people I know when I left. They all said the same thing - it was OK but too long. It's the freaking Odyssey. It's gonna be long.

Some of the set pieces seemed rushed to me - specifically Cyclops.
Giants was rushed but didnt care - very boring - at this point i was getting a rise of skywalker vibe (only in that they rushed from set piece to set piece - pretty bad analogy but it's how i felt in the moment.

lots of misses on casting - but knew that going in. Never would have bought Page as a greek soldier. T Scott - as distracting as Page.
Lupita? fine. simply marvelously out of place
honestly did not like Charlize as Calypso at all - maybe I kept wondering about what may have been with her as Helen.
Zendaya - just don't get the deal with her at all.

The good?
Once he hit Ithaca. A bit rushed at the beginning of his homecoming but it was excellent. When the siege of Troy was being told by Damon I was worried. Ugh, here we go again. Best part of the movie for me

Of course, the movie looks great. It also sounds good. First Nolan film in a while I did not have audio issues.music worked.

A lot of the cast was on point.
Was worries about Holland - he was pretty good
Liked Damon and Hathaway (who is hit or miss for me)
Really enjoyed Pattinson for most of it - maybe a bit too sniveling at the end.
Thought Patel was very good.

Glad I saw it. Don't have to see it again.

All the "masterpiece" talk? Nope.
All the woke trash talk? Nope.
It's fine.

I think its also because he is setting up the different planes of the story he is going to tell. Its not a straight narrative of the events (of course). Once you catch you bearings, and settle in, it starts to flow well. And its also just disjointed because....well the story of the Odyssey is a bunch of little vignettes. I think he ends up weaving them together so well with the rest of the story and also picking up the pace/stakes/urgency as each one occurs.

I get feeling Lupita is out of place, but when she is Clytemnestra killing Agamemnon....she nails the rage and its terrifying. I'm sure another actress could probably pull that off, but that image has stuck with me.

I felt the same. I think the 4 second image of her screaming as she plunged a knife into her husband's chest was so good, that it makes up for her as Helen.

Posted this in another thread, but for all the clamoring about the Eliot/Ellen Page character, I think a viewer coming in with no knowledge of the actor wouldn't even clock anything weird. We're not asked to take that character as a big, credible warrior, he's just this little guy who Odysseus was supposed to protect and didn't.

This is exactly how my wife felt. She had no idea who that was, and it didn't impact her view. I, on the other hand, felt it very off-putting. I still loved the film.

I mentioned this in the other thread, for the purposes of the character Page fit perfectly. And the idea that was ever supposed to be Achilles is nonsense, Sinon's character and why they went to war was pretty intrinsic to the main story.

I didn't mind Travis Scott, Nolan mentioned casting him because he wanted to draw parallels between traditional Greek storytelling and hip-hop which is at least a cool idea conceptually. Overall I thought the cast and performances were really good, I actually liked Lupita in her role(s) and Leguizamo was outstanding.

It was unavoidably long, but as a whole it felt pretty well paced for all the disparate pieces it had to bring together. I never felt like it really dragged at any point, and the third act was awesome.

Overall I really enjoyed it and the "controversies" are totally overblown.

I would also add that, at least in the case of Odysseus' crew, the colorblind casing at least made it easier to discern all of these bearded, sometimes helmeted soldiers from one another. His second-in-command is the Indian guy, got it. The ring belonged to the hefty Black guy who died in the cave. Oh no, the Asian guy fell for the sirens! This is in contrast to Dunkirk, where I remember really having a tough time keeping track of who was who. That's not to say that there should've been a multiracial group of soldiers in Dunkirk, but for this movie that's dealing in myth rather than historical fact, I don't see any any harm whatsoever.

I thought it was awesome. I know almost nothing about the story outside of watching the movie Troy a few times.

None of the casting really bothered me. I also tried to distance myself from the other thread a while back as it was getting to be a bit much. I thought for the most part everyone played their roles really well.

That said, I think the Elliot Page thing was hard to brace for because it was talked about so much. Even trying to avoid much about the movie going in, the discussion/jokes all over social media was hard to not to have top of mind. Didn't help the movie opens up how it does. I do think if you had no idea they were going to be in it, and then just showed up, they played the part well enough. The distraction from the outside was just too hard to overcome.

The scope and scale of the film was tremendous. Is it an all time great, no. Is it still awesome, yes.
