And it was dark, and incredibly violent. Do not take your young daughters to this.

Seen this posted a few times, and it seems like a giant mis-step for DC/Gunn.

Your target audience is (or should be), young girls. Why make it extremely violent, preventing a lot of parents from taking young girls? That seems counter-intuitive.

I think Urban's entire post sums it up perfectly:

I wasn't talking about Filoni as head of Lucasfilm, I was clearly talking about Filoni as a showrunner/screenwriter (since that was obviously the point of comparison), which, IMO, he's not very good at. In other words, I was comparing the quality of Andor (Tony Gilory) to the quality of all the other Star Wars TV schlock.

But while we're here, as bad Kennedy was, we have no proof yet that Filoni will be any better, so I don't fully understand your point there either.

He's not a woman. So he's automatically better.

The Spielbergs of today are directors like Curry Barker (Obsession) and Kane Parsons (Backrooms). Directors who have a unique exciting vision that they execute well with a small budget that go on to be super successful. Now they get more money for their next feature. Honestly most of the exciting directors are coming out of horror these days (those mentioned, Cregger, Eggers, Aster, etc.).

But would any of those filmmakers be able to take that bigger budget and make something like ET or Schindler's List?

Its hard to compare to that, because we don't really have a monoculture anymore. Those movies are seminal in filmmaking because of their originality, their singularity, and because they were at the center of an American monoculture that doesn't really exist anymore. So I do think they will make movies every bit as good as those mentioned and others, but they may not HIT the same way because we are all siloed off into our own entertainment preferences, etc.

But Spielberg earned his clout from Jaws, which was a risk at the time. We all just think of Jaws as made by the legend that is Spielberg, but at the time he was just a kid with no experience. That was a huge gamble that ended up paying off.

Indie filmmakers seem to be in a harder place than they were in the '90s. But we still see situations like Denis Villeneuve. He didn't get the big budget movies, off the bat. He proved his prowess with smaller budgets by making fantastic movies. Prisoners earned him projects like Sicario and Arrival. Those projects earned him the bigger budget projects like Bladerunner 2049 and Dune. All of which demonstrated his ability to take a budget and put EVERY dollar of that budget on the screen.

I doubt any studio is worried about budgets with guys like Nolan or Denis.

Good lord, you are OBSESSED.

For all the **** I get about defending movies, you are just as pathological in your need to relentlessly mock anything you perceive as even POSSIBLY being the slightest bit woke, despite having ZERO evidence to back up your claims.

Despite next to no complaints of woke from those who have seen the movie.

Despite most people in this very thread, who have seen the movie, actually enjoying the movie for the most part.

Despite its 76% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite playwrights making the leap from stage to screen all the damn time.

Yet, in this particular instance, hiring a female writer to write a female-led superhero movie must be DEI!!! She couldn't possibly have given a good pitch or written a good script, that then got mangled in the filmmaking process, as so many good script do. Nope! It's DEI! Also... what nepotism? She's related to no one in the industry, save for her husband, who's basically a "nobody." Rather, she earned a Fine Arts in Theater degree from the Boston Conservatory, was an actor and playwright for 15 years, then... made the leap to films. That an INCREDIBLY normal trajectory.

I swear, you give me so much crap for trusting certain Hollywood types, but anyone who appears to "confirm" your worldview, you'll use as "evidence" just as much, no matter if it's complete bull**** or not.

I hope they keep using her

I think a lot of people also have superhero movie fatigue. After all those Marvel movies, DC movies and whatever else since Iron Man 1 basically, a lot of people are fatigued enough by it to not actually go to the movies to see it. You have a certain amount of people that will always go see all of that like me lol but as far as the average moviegoer that doesn't go to the movies much anyway PLUS probably doesn't know much about comic books or care about them, they don't want to see it in the theater and that makes it hard to make a ton of money on a superhero movie.

You used to could count on a Superman/Batman/Spiderman movie to make a lot of $$$ no matter what but now it's just not a sure thing. Spidey movies still do well so far but it just seems like it's trended that way to me. It's a shame too because when there is a good movie like I think Supergirl was, it doesn't matter because it didn't make enough money to recoup it's costs. Word of mouth could maybe help after people see it but it probably won't change enough minds to make a big difference. And more and more people have the "I'll just watch it at home when it streams" mentality. I don't know if those reasons are why some of these movies are failing in the box office even when they seem to be a good film but that's my opinion. Hope it changes in the future.

RE: superhero movie fatigue, I don't agree with this. I'm excited to see Avengers: Doomsday and will make an effort to view in theater (rare for me at this point).

I DO believe, as is typical, Hollywood saw a successful franchise and tried to reproduce it ad infinitum with IP that no one really cared about. WGAS about Blue Beetle? But as long as it was seen as marketable IP, it gets green-lit.

I actually wanted to see where Justice League/Darkseid/Black Adam went but maybe I'm in the minority. In any case, if the "fatigue" means a return to smaller budget films with better scripts that are now perceived as studio risk, moviegoers will all be better for it.

I never had super-hero fatigue until Marvel started ****ting out phase 4 and onward.

I think Into the Spiderverse and Across the Spiderverse are the two best Spiderman movies we've ever gotten and I can't wait for the third.

I absolutely loved the Batman and can't wait for the Batman Part II.

It's funny how the box office "superhero fatigue" didn't rear it's ugly head until the movies got away from what made phases 1-3 so great. Also, i'm tired of Captain Marvel being cited as a success because of box-office. The box office for Captain Marvel was great because it was released in between Infinity War and End Game. Audiences were conditioned to expect fantastic movies from the MCU, so we all bought tickets for Captain Marvel with those expectations. We were then given the "female hero's journey" that no one likes. She always had the power and was only being held back by men, and she has nothing to prove to men. Literally an exact opposite journey as Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America.

That's a much better thought; although technically she was introduced in Superman. But have her come in 11th hour as an ally in the fight against Brainiac and give her different incarnations of Superman's powers, then judge audience reaction to her and see if she's a worthy inclusion in a future film where she's a bigger part.

As flawed as Bats vs Supes was, there's no denying that Wonder Woman's entrance in the final fight was all-time bad ass.

Her conduct during interviews convinced a lot of girl dads not to bring their girls for a fun dad and daughter movie date, which I'm thankful for. Just because you're oblivious to/don't care about stuff doesn't mean everyone is.

Good Lord, could you clutch your pearls any harder?

Here's exactly what she said…

Quote:

"When discussing the intense online scrutiny female actors face in major fan spaces, Alcock stated: "It's from a lot of people whose profiles have no photo, who are burner accounts. Or someone's name and then 'Dad of four, Christian,' which is hilarious to me."

In no way was she calling out Christians. She was citing the hypocrisy of *******s online, who, when you click on their bio, often pose/virtue signal as the opposite of how they actually act online. Which is definitely a thing. It doesn't mean she thinks Christians are bad or anything of the sort.

Should she have been more careful with her words? Of course. But it's not at all the transgression you're making it out to be, or something tons of dad's all across the country are up in arms about.

I'm with Complete Idiot, Madmartiggan, and Bruce Almighty all the way.

No one cares about this **** but people like you, who are constantly looking for "woke" nonsense to ***** and moan about on the internet.

Hollywood seems to not realize that superhero movies overwhelmingly appeal to men. If you can't get men to a superhero movie your not going to make a profit. But Hollywood is utterly convinced that the "modern audience" is out there somewhere.

That's not entirely true though. It's the historical thinking, and it's why the old Marvel head vetoed Black Widow movies and things like that ("girls don't buy toys"), but it's kind of been disproven.

I gave it a quick google and saw this, for example: https://www.reddit.com/r/boxoffice/comments/brtqzp/na_the_gender_split_of_mcu_and_dceu_movie_opening/

I think of it like the four quadrants thing. Endgame was a four quadrant film. Masters of the Universe and Supergirl are like a 0.5 quadrants. Spending $200mil on that kind of thing is just insane unless you've got a huge fanbase ready to go ( la Minecraft).

What probably should have happened is they stop making these movies after avengers: End Game.

Or instead of trying to immediately replicate the process of 10-15 movies telling one giant overarching story, pivot to 4-5 self contained story lines. Make it feel very different from what we just watched for a decade

My 12 year old daughter and I saw it today. We both really liked it. I don't see why it's getting **** on. It's a fun summer popcorn movie. There were 20-30 people in the theater that all seemed to be enjoying it.

Just saw it with the fam. It was perfectly fine. Not great, but entertaining. I didn't find there to be anything remotely controversial.

It's a good background and setup for super girl to be a more meaningful character in the next Superman (i assume)

The Seth Rogen cameo was amusing.

No idea if that was a good Lobo or not but it wasn't bad in general.

Bonus points for having a Wet Leg song.

In one of the round table reviews I watched on Youtube, the consensus seemed to be that the script had issues but the movie was undercut even further by horrible post production cuts.

And apparently the scapegoating has begun between Gunn and Gillespie, with Gillespie making it clear that Gunn chose the song that accompanied the final fight which everybody is bagging on.

Gunn continues to look more and more like a perfect example of the Peter Principle.

So I was with a youngster relative that wanted to see this movie. So I was one of the few apparently that did that over this holiday weekend.

Boy, was that bad. What exactly was the point of having Lobo in this movie? I really can't think of one reason that he was in this movie. Taking him out wouldn't change anything at all. And why did the poison almost kill the kryptonian dog but all she needed to do was drink milk and puke?

Very bad movie but at least it wasn't solely because of Hollywood leftism, I guess. Just a terrible story.
