Think there's any chance the original script gets leaked so folks can judge it against the end product for themselves?

If I was the writer, I'd certainly be tempted to hand it to someone if I was being blasted for the final product and feared my career could be negatively impacted by the backlash.

It would also be cool to have a few hundred film students and random jabronis from around the country submit their versions and realize how easily they could have gotten one that could have helped them break even.

There is a long list of acclaimed and/or popular movies that came from first time screenwriters. Long list.

This has been a bizarre thread. I imagine there are many ways I could get mad at a movie, from the screenwriter choice to the personal views of the key grip to ..... on and on. I guess I generally, through my life, have seen movie's judged by what we pay for - what is on the screen. In these modern days, people seem to reach really hard to find ways to blast a movie.

It's funny to act like professional writers would care about my comment but NOT about getting passed up for that opportunity by this novice. Imagine being a DC freak working as a writer in Hollywood but with no connections and seeing this project gifted to some random chick.

Girl dad here.
Took said girl to see it this afternoon.
She loved it.

She's not much of a superhero person. But she does like to see representations of herself in various forms on screen, although I'm not sure she could articulate that. But misfits and female characters who go from outcast to hero, especially when they trend on the younger side or have some sort of physical impairment, are right in her wheelhouse.

There's really no mystery why this movie didn't do better now that I've seen it. It hoped to parlay butts in the seats off Superman's massive success, except that success didn't happen. Third in the US in 2025, but $354m would put it 20th among Marvel releases and didn't crack the top 75 all-time domestic.

So instead of some sort of slingshot effect because Superman is in this one too, you get what feels like a huge spinoff of last year's average Superman movie, but with a girl in it and nobody famous except for Jason Momoa, which probably confused a big chunk of everyday people who couldn't figure out why Aquaman was dressed goth and riding a space motorcycle.

This isn't in the 1960s, when Chubby Checker could put out a song called "Let's Twist Again (Like We Did Last Summer)", and have it be a huge hit by reminding everyone about the original "Twist". It's ultimately just poor choices by the franchise runner - which means Gunn.

Even though the Hulk, Thor, and Cap 1 didn't approach the box office success level of Iron Man 1, they were solid movies that told origin stories that had notable actors and actresses in them that were a natural progression of an overall plot line. I know he's said there's not some giant future story plan, but that feels like a mistake. Even having 2 different Batman films with different actors seems dumb and is going to confuse a lot of people.

Find some stars - known or unknown - to play the big roles - WW, Flash, Martian Manhunter, and throw in a few cool misfits that people will root for and get after it. Add in the Lantern Corps after the TV show and get it going or watch it all fade away faster than Henry Cavil's CGI non-mustache in Justice League.

There is zero evidence that this movie was "gifted" to her. Nor is she a "random chick." You keep saying degrading **** like that, with absolutely no proof, and without ever entertaining the alternative - that, as a professional writer, she earned the job with a great pitch, which, by all accounts, is what happened. But that doesn't fit your stubborn, pre-conceived narrative, so it's a no-go in your endless anti-woke crusade.

Also, give me non-fanboys/non-freaks all day long to adapt this stuff. I'll take the Tony Gilroys of the world over the Dave Filonis all day every day. In other words, passion doesn't automatically make one the right person for the job, seeing as *too much* passion for the source material can often lead to a loss of necessary objectivity these kinds of projects require in being adapted for the screen.

I wasn't talking about Filoni as head of Lucasfilm, I was clearly talking about Filoni as a showrunner/screenwriter (since that was obviously the point of comparison), which, IMO, he's not very good at. In other words, I was comparing the quality of Andor (Tony Gilory) to the quality of all the other Star Wars TV schlock.

But while we're here, as bad Kennedy was, we have no proof yet that Filoni will be any better, so I don't fully understand your point there either.

What we do know
- Nogueira hasn't done much
- Supergirl ended up being ass and is going to lose a lot of money

Your "trust me bro" claims that she probably just gave a great pitch and that the script is probably amazing but others messed up the finished product don't hold water. Because you don't know either of those things.

We *also* know...

- Nogueira hasn't done much *in film.* However, she was a veteran playwright and screen actor. Meaning she wrote drama for a living, read professional scripts for a living, and worked on professional productions of all kinds for 15 years.

- After writing Supergirl, Nogueira was awarded the writing gigs for both Teen Titans and Wonder Woman, two huge DC properties. And there's no world in which she was "gifted" those properties had she written a bad Supergirl script. Meaning she almost assuredly earned both gigs based on the strength of her work.

- Multiple people unassociated with the movie went on the record publicly to praise the script before it was filmed.

- The movie "being ass" and losing a lot of money could easily be due to countless other factors having nothing to do with Nogueira's gender or experience. Something failing and you insisting on that something being woke doesn't make woke the cause of its failure, especially when you have poster after poster in this thread, who have all seen the movie (a number of them conservatives), saying it's not woke in the least.

None of those are "trust me bro" claims. They're factual statements and circumstantial evidence that add up to more than your desperate, incessant, anti-woke narrative. Talk about unsourced nonsense, that's all you've got. Just a continued obsession - same as in every other thread - of clinging to the most unsubstantiated claims of "woke," then posting relentlessly for weeks on end about said claims in attempt to bury whatever given project, a project you usually haven't even seen yet for yourself. It's like clockwork.

This movie is bombing because it has no core target audience nor fan base.

Keep deluding yourself enough to think the young(er) female audience wanted this movie. They didn't.

Likewise, keep deluding yourself in to thinking the young(er) male audience wanted it. They don't. I swear sometimes I'm the only boy dad that kind of follows this forum.

Blockbusters have to have a core target audience. If they don't, they better be really good. I have seen nothing to indicate this movie is that good. The lead actress also seems like a bad choice. I only know of her from House of the Dragon. I thought she was fine in it. But she is kind of quirky and a little strange looking. She's not appealing to young men. Maybe dorks but that won't be enough.

It's time to stop the delusion. Gen X comic book loving dads, hoping their daughters will love it, and some may for certain, isn't going to cut it.

Just bad business decisions all the way around. If the goal is to make big profits, a lot of people need to get fired. And I won't even say to then start over. Start over on what?

Supergirl was a hard pass for most of America before they even knew the film was being released.

No one here seems to be deluding themselves, re: your points. Personally, I agree with everything you're saying. By now the writing is on the wall. "Girl power" superhero movies simply no longer perform. Last decade? Sure. Wonder Woman or Captain Marvel could make bank. But those were just about the only ones. MAYBE a new Wonder Woman movie could now, though I'm afraid even that would just end up feeling like reheated nachos at this point.

Regardless, that's not the conversation we're currently having. We're talking about whether this movie failed primarily due to the writer being a woman and a "novice" or not. I, of course, say no. I'm more in your camp, to the point of arguing that the greatest living male screenwriter probably couldn't have saved this thing either. Not in the year 2026, and not in James Gunn's fledgling, lukewarm DCU.

Then we are talking the same language.

It's just bad business. "Supergirl" needs a lot of "girls" to show up. Not happening apparently. Which should not be a surprise to anyone grounded in reality.

Also, I am not aiming my comments at you or any other poster. I will likely never see this movie because I just don't care at all and never will. But I am fascinated by the business side of things. That's how I make money.

I have posited this question before but don't think I ever got a great response. Furiosa, IMO, was an amazing film. Loved it. But it bombed. Why? My gut says girl power/girl boss fatigue. But then I am contradicting myself, when I say make a great movie and it won't matter. Did it just appeal to me? I don't know.

I love when Hollywood makes crazy, lower budget, films, that shock the world as to how great they are. Jo Jo Rabbit may be my example in the last decade. Y'all are much better arbiters of that than me.

But bombed out "block busters" with massive budgets just rankle me from the corporate view I have lived most of my adult life in.

I'm assuming this is being asked for the usual reason - that i'm not allowed to criticize any movie I haven't seen. If that's the case, then i'm assuming those posters who also haven't seen it but are arguing against us should have their arguments nullified as well?

Isn't that the whole point of movie trailers though? Precisely to "judge a book by its cover", in order to convince us to go see it.

I'll probably see it on streaming out of morbid curiosity at this point, but no I have not seen it, to answer your question.

Feel free to go through my posts on this thread to double check me, however I don't believe I have rendered a personal opinion on whether this movie sucks or not. Like many who post on its board I'm interested in entertainment business in general. And this movie has interested me because it's the second movie in Gunn's DC universe, Gunn has been making some very questionable choices in the lineup of his universe, Superman didn't do that well, I actually read and really liked the comic book this movie was based on, it's a huge bomb at the box office which is always of note, and finally, this movie may be the second to last nail in Gunn's coffin unless Man of tomorrow overperforms at the box office.

My comments in this thread have been geared towards how and why the majority of critics have panned this movie. Even those who gave it an overall favorable rating seem to have caveats about liking it. I've also commented about the apparent decision making process behind the movie (granted what we're privy to, of course). And no, I've never once said the script sucked because it was written by a woman.

I've even come out and said that I don't believe the whole christian conservative dad stuff really affected this movies box office returns that much. I tend to agree with Urban Ag up above - my seventeen year old son was raised on superhero movies and couldn't care less about the political christian dad argument, yet he had zero interest in going to see this movie. He should be the target audience! You take that plus the movie being crapped on by all the critics in the days right before it's released and voila!

I'm with yall, kind of a morbid curiosity and a "who was this for?". That's how I've felt about the whole DCU lineup.

Not meaning to repeat myself from the DCU thread, but the lineup is pretty wild. Reheated nachos is a great phrase btw. They either just repeat what we've very recently seen (a Wonder Woman film, a new Superman, etc) or they go super obscure (Creature Commandos, the Authority, Clayface). OR they trick things up that nobody really asked for except maybe super fans (a Batman film focusing on Batman and his son, who I think is the 4th Robin?).

Honestly, all 3 options sound like they're doomed to fail. There probably needed to be some breathing room between the DCEU and DCU, but instead we're oversaturating the market with films like Supergirl with no real fan base and no real audience (in the sense that it's not even appropriate for young girls, with its violence).

Wild stuff. ETA: and huge budgets! A bad mix of obscure character and star, low demand, crowded market and a huge budget. It'd be like making a $200 mil solo Iceman movie as the second film in a new franchise. Just don't!

I have seen the movie. My thoughts on it are a couple of pages back.

IT IS NOT WOKE. I have criticized big name movies such as The Rise of Skywalker, The Last Jedi, and one of Abrams' Star Trek flicks for even the briefest of woke crap. I have avoided movies that were obviously promoting "girl power". Had Supergirl featured anything like that, even briefly, I would have noticed and commented about it.

A couple of things I told my daughter on our drive to the theater last Friday to see the movie, note the word 'to' there, as in before we actually saw it. I told her I expected the movie to fail simply due to what I'd seen in word of mouth or reviews here. I explained this as unsurprising in that, as a comic book movie - the core audience of which is male - it was going to need a lot of girls to not only see the movie, but to see it repeatedly. (Does anyone believe Titanic makes all that money without repeated female viewings?) I told her I doubted that there was much demand for a movie about Supergirl at this stage in the DCU. I then told my daughter that releasing Supergirl as the second DCU film would be like the MCU following up Iron Man in 2008 with Black Widow in 2009. No one would have cared. So then back to the core audience problem, I asked her if she believed that little boys going to a store with their parents would clamor for a Supergirl action figure over any male character action figure. This movie had an uphill battle the moment Gunn decided to make it.

Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel were released before the comic book movie fatigue set in, but I have to wonder if either would do as well if released now.

Regarding Supergirl, I had no idea who wrote the movie. I could not tell that it was written by a woman while watching it. Did it need a female writer? Nope. There was nothing in the film that required any particular gender for the writer (and by that, I mean male or female). I would love to read the original script to see how the finished movie differed, but I'm not going out of my way to find it.

What the movie does pretty well is to depict a person dealing with grief. This didn't have to be Supergirl; it didn't even have to be a comic book movie. And I suspect that's what the female writer connected with the most.

76% is a good movie. Not great by any stretch but not a steaming pile of **** as some are making out. Poor marketing, misplaced target audience and critics are killing this movie. Not because it is woke, or a bad writer, or whatever.

No, might do so down the road when I can do so for free. I don't reward projects like this with my money, nor, as it seems, do a lot of others. As soon as an actor or director takes totally unnecessary shots at the half of the country they despise, whose viewership they're counting on, I'm out. As I said before though, even sans dumb lead, I'm probably not seeing this one in the theater unless a friend coerced me to. All of my reactions have been based on the marketing of the movie, critiques I've read on X, some YT commentaries, and of course, the predictable box office numbers.

The Spielbergs of today are directors like Curry Barker (Obsession) and Kane Parsons (Backrooms). Directors who have a unique exciting vision that they execute well with a small budget that go on to be super successful. Now they get more money for their next feature. Honestly most of the exciting directors are coming out of horror these days (those mentioned, Cregger, Eggers, Aster, etc.).
