IMO, the worst snubs are…
  • No Sing Sing for Best Picture
  • No Denis Villeneuve for Best Director
  • No Challengers for Best Original Score

And the fact that Emilia Perez somehow garnered 13 nominations is utterly insane. No one in this town knows anyone who liked it - in fact, most people I know/have talked to absolutely hated it - yet a small but vocal contingent of assumingely far left weirdos somehow put it over the top (there's a big trans element in the movie).

Just embarrassing all the way around.

I recognized just two names in that entire post - Demi Moore and Elton John.

And only recognized one movie - 'Dune 2'. Can't believe it took them almost 40 years to make a sequel. I enjoyed Sting in the first one.

Didn't know Home Alone kid had a brother. Maybe that counts as another one.

I watched 'Succession', so if I saw a pic of Jeremy Strong, I'm sure I'd know who he is. One of the brothers, or the sister's husband, I assume.

So I guess I just went from only knowing TWO to knowing FOUR.
The rest of them, honestly no.

Maybe it's because there's just SO much content and platforms out there now, but I feel like the Academy Awards are nothing like they used to be. I don't think the condescending political lectures have helped drive viewership either.

Back in the day, I'd have known they were on tonight for WEEKS. Had I not seen this post, I bet the whole night would've come and gone without me realizing they were on.
Can't remember the last time I heard someone talk about "who won an Oscar last night" at work the next day - used to be such a big deal.

I'm not one on here to hound on Hollywood being overrun by progressives/libs/etc. And I don't let my conservative political beliefs rule my viewing habits. I recently watched My Old Ass and really liked it, and I can promise 90% of F16 would hate it.

But I can't say I'm surprised by Emilia Perez getting the run it's getting at the Oscar noms, exactly because of the trans element. There is without a doubt virtue signaling that has taken over the Hollywood awards circuit. And until they fix that the ratings will continue to sink.
TCTTS

I totally hear you. That said, I can't emphasize enough how much everyone I know in the industry mocks this movie, how much every movie podcast I've heard discuss the Oscars has reiterated that they don't know a single person in the industry who likes this movie, and how many tweets I've seen today from industry insiders who have expressed shock/rage/disappointment/embarrassment that this movie is somehow even in the race. I really do think it's a super-far-left/international voter thing from a loud minority, almost as a last-gasp death rattle in the face of Trump being re-elected, that is not at all representative of how most people in this industry/town actually view it.

Yeah, i just looked it up on rottentomatoes and truly don't understand how a movie with positive ratings by only 76% critics and only 31% of audiences gets this many nominations. What a "transparent" farce.

I haven't seen any of the nominees, but will be trying to watch all the nominated films in the best picture, director, and acting categories before the Oscars (with the probable exception of Dune 2, which obviously isn't going to win and doesn't interest me).

Of the films that are not exclusive to theaters at this point, are there any where I should make an effort to see them on the big screen instead of screening?

You would enjoy Dune 2 more than probably every film nominated. I promise. Yes the costumes are odd and there's some world building you have to understand, but man it's a fantastic story and film.

That's the other thing. Everyone this movie is supposed to appeal to in theory is actually detested by it. So many hispanic people say it's disrespectful, while so many trans people say it's insulting, tone-deaf, etc.

The whole thing seems to pander only to a small contingent of theater dorks and white, back-patting, bleeding heart liberals. I saw someone jokingly say the only people who actually like the movie are basically the white families from Get Out.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?

It really does sound like a small but effective contingent of theater dork actors, the most pompous of white liberals, and then white international voters with terrible taste. I guess there's just enough of those types sprinkled among the voting body to make a difference? Otherwise, literally everyone else not only hates it, but is incredulously asking the exact same question you are. Even a ton of white liberals I know and, once again, seemingly most hispanics and trans people as well. It's baffling.

To her credit, she's currently far-and-away the favorite to win Best Supporting Actress.

So she could either be...

Zoe Saldana, star of a wildly popular Taylor Sheridan series, along with three of the biggest sci-fi franchises of the last 20 years.

- or -

Oscar winner Zoe Saldana, star of a wildly popular Taylor Sheridan series, along with three of the biggest sci-fi franchises of the last 20 years.

In other words, come March, she'll be in the midst of one of the greatest runs in box office history, will be headlining a multi-season arc on a prominent, name-brand TV show, AND will likely/finally have prestige/awards bonafides, all of which only a handful of actors have ever achieved/would otherwise sell their souls for.

I think movies can get lost in the awards campaigns that get built around them when they weren't made for that to begin with. This is a movie made by a French director that premiered at Cannes. Not your typical Hollywood Oscar bait. It won awards and acclaim there (which often does not translate to US success or acclaim). Netflix saw it was successful there, bought it, and has been campaigning for it HARD ever since.

Look I'm not saying Emilia Prez is GOOD, but….but…it is compelling in a watching a train wreck kind of way. It's one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen and mashes up genres in a creative, if scattered, way.

The performances of Saldana and Gomez are actually really impressive. I think Saldana would be the front runner in the lead category if she had opted to go that route too, tbh.

I don't think it deserves ALL the awards chatter (as many noms as Titanic?), and it is baffling to me why it has this political element of support considering it's not really pro-trans in any way. It's just a story about a trans drug cartel leader and all the fall out from his choices, mostly bad.

BUT…if you watch the movie and try and drown out all that chatter and just take it at face value, it's entertaining in its own way. Like that clip from above…that moment is supposed to be absurd and weird in the movie. It's not like the tone of the movie is straight serious. It's very bizarre and that's kind of the point.
