Not surprised there isn't a thread yet since this is apparently flopping hard. (Although doing well critically.)

I saw weekend showtimes were almost fully removed at my theater this weekend, so I went to watch it last night in an empty theater.

Gotta say though, other than the ape gimmick which I felt was completely unnecessary going in (and still do to some extent), I mostly enjoyed that.

I liked the focus on family, I liked most of the musical numbers, though I was not a fan of how "metaphorical" it got at times. Feels like way too much of the movie was just imagery of how RW was feeling rather than something that actually happened.

But that's really my only issue with it. I got choked up multiple times, especially at the end.

I would say if you're a fan of Robbie Williams, it's worth your time.

Never heard of Robbie Williams. When I first heard about it, I thought it was a biopic about Robin Williams and was kind of excited to see a chimp play him.

This is the first video I seen of his and didn't feel like watching any more...haha

I'm exactly the right age to know who Robbie Williams is. So when I first heard about the movie I remarked to my wife, "Huh, guess they've decided to do a biopic about every singer… wait, who the **** is Robbie Williams." The concept could be fun and work, but it really is a niche audience who would be immediately interested in it.

I'm aware of him broadly, but that's about it. Looks like he had a couple of top 100 hits in the late 90s/early 2000s ("Angels" peaked at 53 and "Millennium" at 72) and a few top 20 songs on the Dance charts, but his UK success didn't really carry over to the States.

I'm 53 years old and have never heard of him. And I tried to listen to his songs, and nope.

I remember that video and millenium got some airtime on mtv for a few months and then that was about it for Robbie Williams's impact on the American pop scene. I've been told he is huge in Europe and Australia and even there the movie is flopping. Perhaps this is a "The Producers" type scenario to launder some cash as that is more believable than someone thinking a movie about a British pop star as a chimp who is no longer on most of the world's radar would be a hit movie. I guess the American equivalent would be a Ricky Martin as a baboon biopic coming out next year.

I have seen the trailer in theaters half a dozen times now and I still don't get a sense of what the film is about.

Where did all of the orgasmic reviews they quoted in the trailer come from ? Do they just manufacture that stuff?

Reviews overall are really great and people I know that have seen it said it was excellent. It's just not generating a lot of box office for reasons we've discussed (mainly that he's pretty unknown here).

I mainly know Robbie Williams from watching Graham Norton Show clips on youtube

Did a speed read through his greatest hits album, he has a good voice but the songs are mostly schmaltz

Probably less than 10% know who Robbie Robertson is even though you could get it right by just guessing he was in the band.
