Never understood the love for No Country for Old Men. Good movie, but the fact it's in the final 4 shows how high some people regard it, which I don't get. I personally think O Brother Where Art Thou and True Grit are better movies, in this century.
One of my buddies and I saw NCFOM when it came out because I had heard it was so great. Neither one of us liked it much at all.

I think Hell or High Water is better than all of them.
I specifically mentioned Coen Brothers movies in the 2000's.

Man it's amazing how much better trailers are than they used to be. That Gladiator trailer was awful. Could have used some Kanye or something…

The best character tournament could definitely highlight some of the early-round knockouts of this tournament.
And possibly give us a tournament where the Final 2/4 isn't an automatic known.

I'm leaning toward the format of ACTOR NAME as CHARACTER NAME and then take every nominee that comes out.
To avoid superpower early matchups, I think I might do what we once did for best soundtrack and have some seeding prelims - groups of 4-8 where you vote for your favorites or potentially rank all 4, then really seed the thing. Would be a lot more work, but could be really rewarding as well.

Having people vote on Waltz from IB vs. Bardem from NCFOM vs. RDJ as Iron Man vs. Ledger as the Joker all seem like unchartered territory we should be diving into,

I was thinking when I watched them that I don't think for Tolkien book fans you could have done any better than that teaser.

Deservedly so. It's a really good movie, but best of the last quarter century? Come on.

I mean that's gotta be our Final Four right?

Though for fanboys like me I'd love to have McKellan in the mix as Gandalf.

Edit: Actually I might have Phoenix as Commodus in there over RDJ.

Edit #2: On further thought I'd put Depp as Jack Sparrow over RDJ as well.

I'm going to do everything I can to get Dom Toretto to the quarterfinals because family

But that's the real debate, isn't it? Everyone's criteria for "best" is going to be a little different. Is Gladiator the "best" from an artistic perspective, meaning strength of performances, direction, and script? Not many would say so, including yourself presumably. It's certainly well made enough, especially when compared with other historical epics like Troy or Napoleon (shudder.) But was it the "best" from a spectacle and entertainment perspective? It's much harder to dismiss Gladiator on that level. For proof, just consider how quotable Gladiator is. It's become part of the cultural reference lexicon. Few movies can claim the same. NCFOM definitely can't, regardless of its other excellent qualities.

A best characters tourney could have Brian Earl Spilner as an entry and a voter. Same with Duncan Idaho.

If we did an all-time movie character tournament, Jack Burton would win with 3 million percent of the vote

The semifinal results are in and someone finally took the Joker's advice on how to get to the tournament final.

That's right, boys, perennial favorite The Dark Knight was stopped one step short of the finale by 4 young hobbits, an elf, a dwarf, a stormcrow, a guy destined to die in every movie he's ever been in, and the second choice to play Isildur's Heir, sending Fellowship of the Ring off in a bold new direction - the title round.

Where it will take on the only version of Gladiator that ever should have been produced - Russell Crowe's version without CGI baboons that look liked I drew them on an Apple 2E computer or sharks that will swim 400 miles an hour to eat someone who has been bleeding in the water for half a second.

Because at the end of the day, you don't bring a compressed air gun to a sword fight.

Semifinal Results

Gladiator def. No Country for Old Men: 60.4%-39.6%

LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring def. The Dark Knight 55.2%-44.8%

Fifth through Eight place Results
5. Return of the King 39.6%
6. Inglorious Basterds 24%
7. Inception 19.8%
8. Inception 16.7%

Character Tournament Interest: I'm excited to report that almost 59% of you are too lazy to help doing it, but want it to happen. That's why the Aggies can't win a damn thing in football.

Definitely blew that one. I think the success of The Batman might be the reason that Dark Knight has slipped. Definitely look forward to including characters from both in the Best Character tourney to come.

Does it include animated characters or is that something completely separate?

I'm going to start a new thread later today where we can all discuss. I'd rather hash out some parameters in advance and try to get the best ideas from a groupthink then do it all myself.

Yes, every time I think about it, it seems like a very long term project, but it can't be worse than the soundtrack one.

After 103 votes cast in 8 hours, we have our winner.

After falling behind 11 votes to 5 early on, the Fellowship of the Ring roared back to take a decisive 64-39 victory over Gladiator and win the title of best movies 2000-2024.

The consolation round was not won by the hero TexAgs deserves, but the one it needs right now. The Dark Knight cruised to a 70-33 victory over No Country for Old Men.

Thanks for playing along!

Not mashed or mayo/mustard salad. But every other kind.

Hashbrowns are my jam
