What's hilarious about this is just how out of touch it all is.

The people that lost their minds about the Little Mermaid were mostly white, suburban, moms, that loved the film as little girls and didn't want the memory trampled on. My wife (although not white) was one of them. I had a lot of fun trolling her about it because frankly I couldn't give a sh** one way or the other.

That's a tweet, posted originally and linked here, to do nothing more than throw a tantrum. You're a racist if you voted Trump. LMAO.

But carry on by all means.

Ah, yes, people are just "noticing." Nothing more. They're definitely not having aneurysms on social media over it, heavily implying that a black woman can't possibly be more attractive than a white woman.

Are you sure about your assessment? I have loosely followed this thread for entertainment value but originally watched it because I want to see this film.

I haven't picked up on a vibe that anyone is stating black women can't be beautiful or as beautiful as white women. Can you back that up? And while I have heard the name, I didn't know anything about Lupita, so I looked her up. She is quite beautiful. She has amazing bone structure in her face which is often the catalyst for many to assess both female and male "beauty". I'm much less subjective myself but that is not germane here.

Could it simply be that throughout the entirety of western history, Helen of Troy was always believed to be of Greek descent and never a mention of her being sub-Saharan or Nubian? And therefore, this rankles the sensibilities of many from both a historical and cultural perspective? Further, it has absolutely nothing to do with some strawman argument comparing beauty among races and the inevitable accusation from the left that a black Helen could not be that attractive based purely on the color of her skin? Maybe.

Also, no one here said you're racist if you voted for Trump. It's simply humorous the consistency in which certain conservatives - most of them here men - get irrationally upset over the race of make believe fantasy characters in movies.

The person who wrote that tweet was responding to the author of that article and those on social media who share the author's POV. So, in response, I was referring to those on social media, on the other side of the isle, who are doing more than simply "noticing" the change - instead, they're being blatantly racist in their very vocal *****ing. I wasn't referring to anyone in this thread, nor am I saying anyone on social media who's against the casting is a racist. I'm merely pointing out the fact that the author of that tweet made one side out to be *******s and the other side out to be perfectly innocent. When, in reality, there are *******s on both side.

For me, it's simply context matters. In this context, having a girl play Achilles (unconfirmed) and a Kenyan play Helen of Troy (confirmed) is as out of context as it can possibly be. It's Netflix level race swapping on the latter and is completely nonsensical.

Conversely, I've always lamented that someone like Idris Elba did not get to play James Bond. He would have been awesome at it, I think. The only context there is that the character be a suave badass, secret agent. And its genesis was not based in ancient culture that looked wholly different than today.

Pretty simple, really.

Should Nolan only cast Greek actors and actresses in the pursuit of accuracy?
Cliff.Booth
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I doubt many are arguing that (outside of Greeks, which is understandable), but having actors who conceivably look like Mediterranean Europeans would be better.

If you directed a movie adaptation of a Vedic epic, who would you cast to play Lord Krishna? If you were making the live-action remake of Moana, who would you cast as Maui? If you directed a movie about Kintaro, would you find a Japanese actor or someone else? Would you find anyone upset by nontraditional casting irate or bigoted for their opinions?

I think they would argue for an Indian to play Vishnu rather than just someone who vaguely looks like what you think an Indian looks like.

I think every movie is different; and how it's presented matters. Having a black person playing a character in the Brad Pitt's Troy wouldn't have made sense. This doesn't seem to be that type of movie though. This movie feels more like a comic book movie than trying to portray any kind of historical accuracy. We have American actors using American accents with modern American-English. There's costuming that doesn't fit the time period at all. I think it's fine to be upset with how the movie is getting made, but it seems odd to watch the trailer, see how this movie is contained within its own universe and then complain about the race or genders of the actors. This movie is using a Greek story, but it doesn't feel like a Greek movie.
Cliff.Booth

Right, and both the Subcontinent and Greek lands were invaded and conquered in part multiple times by different groups on their periphery over millennia, so what looks "like a Greek" or "like an Indian" varies a decent bit.

So it's cool to have a guy with no Greek or Mediterranean ancestry play Odysseus because he's white but not someone who is African? Vague skin tones doesn't seem to meet the criteria you're laying out.

Not really, Damon wouldn't have been my pick for that part, either (for a few reasons), but I'm not making the picture. I get that you're trying to do appeal to extremes, but the position most dissenters have on this isn't an extreme one. Cast people that immerse you in the world of the traditional setting. That is very doable, and it would be better.

Matt Damon in a period film based in a foreign land always seems weird to me and he sticks out like a sore thumb. In The Great Wall it was laughably bad.

Same. The Last Duel was one of my favorite movies of the last several years, but if I could see a version with someone else in Damon's place, I feel it would be better. I think he plays a kind of American dude well, but beyond that, I feel like I'm watching Medieval Matt Damon or Classical Matt Damon.

Helen of Troy = The face that launched a thousand of ships

Lupita Nyong'o = The face that launched a thousand empty theaters.

There is no way she is even in the top 100 of most beautiful women actresses. I can go a week seeing dozens of more beautiful women in real life than Lupita. Even more beautiful black women in real life.

Lupita is a good actress, but she is very mid....5 or 6 out of a 10. However, the left gives her minority bonus points so ya'll see her as a 10. lol

Would you be okay if Nolan casted Matt Damon as Nelson Mandela in a movie? Why is it held up as amazing if you race swap a black person for a white person. But it is racist to do the other.

We all know that you would be going crazy if they put Sydney Sweeney as Helen of Troy.

I think Nolan did Lupita dirty. All this talk about her attractiveness i am sure isn't doing her mental health any good.

I am sure the movie will make a lot of money, but because of his casting choices with Lupita, Travis Scott, and Ellen Page they will be leaving a lot of money on the table.

Somehow I think most conservatives would be quite upset with what the "traditional setting" looked like in the ancient Mediterranean. What you want is a 19th century European Romantic picture.

Helen of Troy is a mythological figure whose race is in no way central or even peripheral to her story. Mandela is a bit different, wouldn't you agree? You keep making this about politics and race. Says something about where conservatives are.

Back to this comment.

This movie will clearly do really good (great?) numbers opening weekend. Which will no doubt be used to boast on Twitter, "Ha,ha, I told you dumb MAGA trolls that your racist whining wouldn't affect anything!" It'll have two weeks without real competition until the new SpiderMan movie drops. And lets's face it, unless it bombs in the extreme (not going to happen) there's no realistic way to determine how many people decided not to see it specifically because of the current controversy.

So, what does that leave?

Reviews? Ehhh, not really. I think it's clear the critical review system is broken. "Professional" critics are by and large full of ****, approaching filmgoing from a politically or socially biased stance. Hence why we see such a large critic vs public ratings discrepancy these days. So, unless this movie ends up unanimously (critics AND public) on one end of the spectrum, I don't think the RottenTomatoes/IMDB ratings wil settle the debate either.

So, that just leaves father time as judge. In 5, 10, or 15 years will this be a Nolan classic that people still revisit at home, like they do with The Dark Knight and Interstellar?

In summary, sorry folks but I think we just need to go ahead and have staff pin this thread at the top so TC and Cliff can add their daily thoughts on it for the next 5 or 10 years!

In 15 years, younger people will be like "THIS movie won some Oscars?" and you'll have to explain to them what the Academy's criteria became.

Yes the Odyssey is mythological, but it is part of Western Culture. Which is basically white culture. If I get dreadlocks it is called culture appropriation. These are the rules your belief system has come up with. Do you not see the hypocrisy?

It really isn't about her race to me. It is that she isn't that attractive. If it was Halle Berry from her younger days, I could see it. If this was Maria Carey in her younger days. If this was Whitney Houston. If this was a black woman at the level of those three ladies. There would be a lot less push back. Yes, there is going to be those that would flat out reject any black woman. Lupita is just mehhhh.... Her face couldn't launch one ship.

If you don't want it to be about race, don't create the stupid DEI rules. We all know that if Lupita was white, she wouldn't have gotten the role. We all know that Travis Scott wouldn't have gotten the role if he was white. We all know that Ellen Page wouldn't have gotten the role if she wasn't mentally ill. She more known for cutting off her breasts then her acting career.

We are just playing the game with the rules that the left and Hollywood has created. This is your DEI world.
