A new "Christmas thriller" from Netflix that just released tonight.

One that I initially thought looked decent, if not a bit generic, but turns out is actually getting pretty rave reviews all of the sudden, from a number of critics I like. In fact, it's currently at 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is obviously better than most Netflix movies.

I haven't seen it yet myself, but just wanted to alert the board, considering it's somewhat under the radar, and see what y'all think...

Seen the previews and it's looks interesting and Bateman is enough reason to give it a try.

As a frequent flyer in the post 9/11 world, still trying to wrap my brain around the concept of young, good looking, fit, heroic, TSA agent with a smokin hot girlfriend. No worky.

I'm trying to understand if anyone at TSA would even know or care if a dangerous bag made it through. I once left a full sized pocket knife in my back pack and TSA didn't catch it at all. Hell I didn't even catch it till I got to my hotel and reached into the front zipper to pull out some business cards and found a knife instead.

I'm still looking forward to watching this.

Just finished it. Honestly a lot better than I expected. For a general action movie, I think there were plenty of twists and turns. Egerton did a good job but his American accent was a bit rough at times.

Just finished it. Meh - 5/10
A fair bit of the acting wasn't great. Several plot holes and unbelievable moments, but there were plenty of twists and turns that kept my attention.

Jason Bateman was good as always.

I don't know the actor who played the TSA agent, but I thought his acting was pretty awful.

By far not the worst movie I've seen, but I won't be recommending it to anyone.

Yeah ... I agree. Not really an action fan because the filmmakers always expect you to drop all pretense of reality -- i.e. two guys fighting both fall 50 feet on metal or concrete and get up to keep fighting -- but I went in with an open mind.

The whole thing was pretty far-fetched. I found myself saying over and over, "That would never happen."

Saw it last night. Not bad! Bateman does a good job playing the bad guy!

5/10 as a movie is pretty accurate.
If you grade on action movie scale it's more like 7.5 to 8 out of 10.

Yeah, I watched it last night with the following expectations:

1) its a straight to Netflix movie, and
2) its a typical one-man-saves-the-day action movie, not a realistic depiction of soldiers or policemen.

Therefore, I was completely entertained and would give it a 7-8 out of 10 on that scale.

He played Elton in that biopic from a couple years ago. And was the lead in the Apple mini series Blackbird.

Actually saw one in the San Diego airport that looked like a sharp ex marine or special forces guy and immediately started worrying that he was going to discover the edibles in my carry on. Then did a quick google search in line and realized it's legal to fly out of Cali with em.

Might take one tonight and watch this movie in his honor.

The 58% audience rating is much more accurate than the critic 86%. They must only let that critic group watch B movies and amputee porn.

My wife picked this one last night and I mostly agree with the above. Good entertainment when you're not expecting a top notch level film.

Agreed, the critics are IDIOTS and/or have biased views that most of the general population do not agree with. I'm interested in checking this one out, but I'm going in with low expectations.

It's over the top hate to think 86% vs 58% is really odd? I'd say the constant hollywood jocksniffing is over the top and weird. They clearly used a different measuring stick on this one.
TCTTS

There's a difference between finding that disparity "odd" vs the utter hatred constantly spewed on this board for critics, angrily calling them "IDIOTS," etc. It's just laughable and over-the-top, as if they're all a hive mind and go around pushing people's moms down stairs or something.

Also... everyone reacts to movies they like differently. Especially people who make a living out of watching them, and have to wade through so much **** day after day after day, who are often more elated when they come across something they enjoy. Which is perfectly okay.

Did I post that they were idiots? No, I didn't. And you literally just made the same point I did initially. They must be buried in crap and then looked on this favorably. Take the lecture elsewhere. We get enough of them from you out here

Watched this last night because I saw Jason Bateman was in it, and it was the #1 movie on Netflix. Halfway through the movie I thought to myself wow this is actually pretty good. I looked up the movie on Wikipedia and saw the good reviews and that Collet-Serra was the director.

Pretty solid Netflix movie, not going to win an Oscar or anything but a good way to spend a sunday night.

Don't get the hate, thought it's a fun way to spend an evening.

Spoilers for the end:

I did laugh that after the TSA Agent stopped an international terrorist attempt basically singlehanded, he only became an officer at LAPD. Like damn, man, surely the FBI would have taken you for that, right? Set your bar higher.

Has Taron Egerton really bulked up lately? I thought he was wearing a ballistics vest under his shirt the whole time. Like he was physically bigger but weirdly lumpy?

I enjoyed this movie and would recommend any to watch it. I thought Bateman was a great villain, and everything the TSA agent tried to do, he was there to knock him back a peg or two. There chess game was entertaining. GF not the best actress, but fine job.
The car chase scene, being CGI was awesome! That seemed pretty realistic and got my heart pumping.

There is a bit in the beginning that screams "TSA Agents are people too, damnit" but whatever, when you do so many cop, military, pilot hero movies, you're left with TSA Agents and Mailmen....

edit: I'd love to hear the defenders of Die Hard is a Christmas movie, how you would classify Carry-on. If you call DH a Christmas movie, I don't know how you don't call Carry-on a Christmas Movie. It is almost checking the box on DH's criteria and including it all in the movie.

If a movie has a high critic score and a low audience score I go in pretty skeptical. If it's reversed, I'm much more excited about watching it.

I've always assumed it's because critics notice little things and appreciate things the average movie goer doesn't.
