As a small child, the witch in Snow White scared me really bad, specifically the scene when the dwarves chased her to the cliff edge in the rainstorm.

There is a scene in Shogun where they boiled someone. It was awful and I had nightmares for a long time. I am not sure why I saw that movie as a kid.

There was something about the Running Man that really creeped me out but I cannot recall the scene.

That's a great one. Funny to watch as an adult and try to remember why it seemed scary.

I was 4 when my dad took me to see this:

Godzilla Versus Hedorah (released in this country as Godzilla Versus the Smog Monster). That squid thing with the big red eyes swimming right into the camera caused me many nightmares.

And maybe leaning too much toward horror, but this movie is probably my earliest movie memory.

It's called The Monster That Challenged the World. I was probably no more than 3 years old. I recall that we watched it on TV. The scene that would be burned into my memory I could not find online, but right before the above scene, the little girl had gone into the lab where there was a compression chamber. The critter had been decompressed in that chamber. She started pushing some random buttons on the thing, and lo and behold, it was recompressed (is that a word?). It broke out of the top of that chamber, looked like a jack-in-the-box monster on a spring. Scared me so bad that I refused to go into my bathroom alone because there was a window in there that I was convinced that monster would bust through to get me while I was dropping a deuce. The memory of that scene was with me my entire life. When Netflix came around with their system of sending you discs, I went through every monster movie they had - and went through a lot of crap - before I finally stumbled on this title.

Also

Pretty much the entirety of the Dark Crystal

My dad was working in Chile at the time for weeks and mom took me and my brothers (5, 9, 11) and boy did she regret it. Nightmare fuel.

Willy Wonka is a horror movie, so it doesn't qualify.

Being the inquisitive, sneaky child that I was I saw The Deer Hunter before I turned 10 and it was the first time I saw man being viciously cruel to man in ways that even a child understands to be realistic.

I was both mesmerized and terrified.

I don't know if it counts as a horror movie, but to this day, no movie has impacted me more than Jaws. I'd check for sharks at the lake, a river, and even a pool when I was younger after seeing it. Certainly every time I'm at a beach.

The underwater scenes got me the most...combo drowning and mauling and dying

Bad movie and it's comically a bad scene in reality , but that lady being turned into a robot in Superman III scared the crap out of me when I was a kid.

This. I still get creeped out by it, regardless of how stupid it actually looks.

I have the opposite feeling on a lot of these 70s movies. I saw Star Wars before I saw any of them (Black Hole, Flash Gordon, etc.) and that made me realize how cheesy all of those other movies look. It took all the fear away that i may have felt if I had seem them first.

I used to be a big fan of Air Wolf, and back in those days, Jan-Michael Vincent was a big star. Because of this, his previous movies were all over the TV. I watched one called "Shadow of the Hawk". I don't remember anything about it, and it's probably terrible. But I do remember that this freaking thing would jump scare over and over again:

To this day, decades later, it's the only thing I remember about it. I used to have nightmares about that thing.

The scene in Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan when Khan put those beetle things in their helmets, and the bugs subsequently burrowed into their ears. That messed my elementary school self up for a bit.

The previously mentioned Temple of Doom heart yanking scene.

Random one (think I have this one right): in one of the Chuck Norris, Missing in Action movies, there's a scene where they put a bag over the prisoner's head and put a rat in the bag. After a scuffle for a few seconds, this big patch of blood starts to appear on the bag, the bag is removed, and he's killed the rat by biting it. That almost made me throw up as a kid and I'm not sure I've ever seen the rest of the film.

Yeah. The ending of The Black Hole was unnerving for a Disney sci-fi movie.
So during Covid year the wife and I were making our boys watch old (mostly 80's) movies with us a couple times a week. For whatever reason I had some memory of a memory that The Black Hole was some sort of classic. Probably cause I thought the robots were cool when I was a little kid.

I am convinced my parents must have shut it off before the last ten minutes back when we saw it on VHS. That ending is some seriously tripped out, fever dream, nightmare fuel for kids. A bit unsettling for adults. Had no recollection of it. My kids just gave the WTF look and dad didn't get to pick the movie for awhile.

Lots of scenes from Chernobyl.

Yep, though in a way it does seem like they storyboard the series like a horror story.

So I consider Scream to be more of a comedy than horror.

But that first scene was something else. My wife was never the same after seeing that.

Everybody at school was depressed the next day. It wasn't so much the nukes as it was the horror of surviving.

Yep. I remember that day well. It was like everyone knew we were all either going to die or have to find a way to live as survivors. The Cold War may not have been a shooting war, but it sucked having the threat of nuclear destruction hanging over your head every day.
