half way through book 2. Loving it. Found it b/c of this thread, so thanks OP!
Excellent! Discovered it here as well. Both it and Dresden Files were home run recommendations.
Have you tried Monster Hunter International by Larry Correa? I enjoy them a great deal and they make me laugh out loud at times (especially the first 3 Memoirs). Columbus Day by Craig Alanson also can get a chuckle out of me.
Will check it out! Thnx

I'm about 3/4 through the first book and when it was revealed I was cracking up in the car. It's been a while since I've audibly laughed at a book

There are a lot of moments that made me laugh out loud while listening. I just finished book 6 and can't wait for book 7 to be released. Hopefully soon.

I envy you the ability to listen to it for the first time.

You will burn through the series way too fast.

When you get to the end of the series so far, look at "One more last time" first book of "The Good Guys" by Eric Ugland
He also has a set called "The Bad Guys" and they cross at about Good Guys book 10 so you may want to swap to the Bad Guys book 1-7 then you can alternate.

Other series you may enjoy:
Mayor of Noobtown
Primal Hunter
Ripple System

All have a lot of humor mixed in. I would say that DCC has more "substance" and these are more "candy" and you also may want to find the "jump forward 30 seconds" button in audible when they get to stats.

Have fun!

I found a reading of it on YouTube for the first 3 books. I'm assuming this will get taken down eventually but I listened to like 3 hours today while doing mindless stuff at work.

So far it's hilarious. I like the Awaken Online LitRPG series but haven't listened to anything like this in quite a few years.

Come on man, don't be that guy. Just download it on audible so the author can make money for his work. They already get screwed enough by Audible as it is.

Apologies - I missed this more for people like myself who had no idea what the series was to get a taste. As expected it's already been pulled down. I plan to buy all the books on audible and had made my mind up on that by about the end of the first hour. This is right up my alley.

I feel like that with people listening to the Dresden files for the first time. I don't know how many friends I've introduced to that series but I've only had a couple say it wasn't for them.

NEW ACHIEVEMENT: Look At Me Now, Dad!

You have decided to pay an author for his time and effort instead of being a freeloading little *****. Congratulations! Now you just need to move out of your parents basement and get a real job.

Dresden does start off slow. I had to bribe my kids (both adults) to get to book 3 because both wanted to quit halfway through the first book. Book 3 is when the depth of characters begins to pick up and by book 3 both were all in.

The other book I had to get involved with them was "Beware of Chicken". I told them they needed to get to the Farm before quitting. Now one of my kids has a cat named after the Chicken. Again, not going to say the name because of spoilers….

The production is by SoundBoothTheater and they have the beginning online as a sample:

https://soundbooththeater.com/webplayer/229783/?guest=1

Feel free to edit the original post and replace the YouTube with the link. I think it is great that more people get exposure to the series.

I listened before they added all of the "theater effects" and it was just Jeff Hayes. I wonder if the additions help or hurt the story telling.

I enjoyed He Who Fights and his humor is kinda his thing I just know the politics turns some off.

I check out Starter Villian when I finish Mark of the Fool

Thanks for the suggestion

In the middle of book four now. This is fun to read. Mainly because it subverts expectations. I am so tired of typical linear "this is what is supposed to happen" type of story building. Ya know, good guy struggles then beats bad guy and gets the girl and rides off. This is just more….chaotic. More true to life and I love it. I can't remember the last time I read a passage in a book and was like, "whoa, did that just happen?!"

Good stuff!

As an owner of a female cat and overall cat dude, I understand all the cat nuance in my soul but not going to lie, I adore Mongo. The sequence of him spinning and squealing in delight in a blood shower while everyone is screaming in horror and disgust legitimately made me laugh out loud. (Don't think spoiler tags are needed for that) And books don't make me laugh.

Book 7 officially announced:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0DJWKWV8W

Quote:

Audible preorder coming next week. Paperback (yes, there will be a paperback version) preorder coming soon as well.

They call it Faction Wars.

The ninth floor.

Nine armies, each led by rich and powerful aliens from across the galaxy. Each team has one objective: to capture and hold the castle at the very center of the battlefield. Strategy, alliances, pitched battles, and, of course, betrayal... It all makes for great fun and even greater television.

After all, none of these powerful aliens really die when they're playing war.

Except this time. This time, winner takes all. Those who fall, stay in the ground.

As the AI continues its rapid decline, Carl and company take advantage of the chaos. For the first time ever, the crawlers are fighting back. They are now one of the nine teams. And this season, there's a tenth army on the playing field. The NPCs, who are normally used as nothing but cannon fodder, have become fully self-aware and formed a team of their own.

For Donut and Katia, the stakes are even higher. Only one of them will be allowed to leave this level.

If they all want to survive, they're going to need a little help from a veteran or two.

This is it.
This is what they've been fighting toward.
This is war.

This inevitable ruin.
I just recently finished up B6 so super stoked for this. This is the big leadup we have been waiting for. Stuff is going to happen....can't wait!

November 11th for Kindle release.

I'm on chapter 8 of Book 1 and I started it on Audible due to the number of people on this and the book thread who were recommending it.

8 chapters in, I totally get it. It's hilarious and fun!

I am loving the Audible narrator for this book. He's pretty great. He does have a Patrick Warburton vibe, and it's pretty perfect for the tone of the book.

It's like Puddy from Seinfeld meets Dungeons and Dragons.

I recommend !

I try to push the audiobook every chance I get. Jeff Hayes is a full experience in himself. The range of voices and accents is unreal. There are several moments I can't believe it's not a full cast reading different characters. I'm not sure I could read it without reading it in the voices he does.

Edit: And not to spoil anything, but Patrick Warburton actually voices one of the characters in a later book.

I think it was when they were marketing the soundbooth version at the end of book one that I figured out it was just one person voicing all the characters. I was really surprised by it because I had assumed it was multiple people doing the voices when I first listened to it. I think he has to be the best audible narrator I've come across, and I can't think of anybody who I would consider a close second to him.

I signed up to Dinnaman's Patreon so I could read the working version of the chapters of book 7 before it was released (there are still a few chapters yet to go).

$3 a month and I had to know what happens in faction wars after burning through the first six books.

I know The Dresden Files come up often here and on the 2024 Books Read thread. Don't really see a need for it to have a dedicated thread so just leaving this here and there. Just finished watching the series. It is on Amazon Prime if anyone is interested. Thought it was decent enough as a stand alone show but does no justice to the books (much like I am Legend book versus Will Smith's version), can't figure out why they need to change everything so much. Oh well, just in case anyone hasn't seen it, I don't know how long it is on there but it is there now.
