-Casual Alien fan here-

I'll agree with the scary take- this felt more suspenseful than horror to me.

Really enjoyed the last cargo ship sequence. Human Alien was trippy as hell. When they finally revealed it's face, a woman very audibly said "WOAH" in this dead quiet theater. Affect achieved

Visuals of the station colliding into the ring belt were awesome.

Made me want to revisit the Alien lore again.

Was that me? Were you in the same theater we were? We just got home after watching it.

That last creatures tongue reminded me of some of the creatures on resident evil.

When that character stated she was pregnant early in the movie, everyone knew what the future held.

Not sure why they were still next to the planet rings when they were already getting ready to go in the cryotubes. One would think they would get out in open space first.

It was creepy as hell when that human/alien hybrid started smiling…

Truly awesome alien/monster. Best part of the movie, by far.

I about lost it in the theater when she said that so loudly. You could hear pin drop during that entire sequence.

Minor complaint now that I've slept on it: Not that he was an integral part of the story - but I could understand maybe ~10 lines of dialogue from that skinny kid. What the hell was that accent? He probably did have one of the coolest deaths, though.

I went this weekend and really enjoyed it. It's not on the level with Alien or Aliens, but it's firmly in the second tier with Prometheus and Covenant. It was definitely walking a line between homage and outright plagiarism at different points. I think this is a movie you can justify pretty much any opinion of. I went in just looking to have fun, and that's what happened. If you want to be critical about how it doesn't measure up, I can totally see that as well.

One thing I was thinking about this weekend is how I liked how they split up the station into Romulus and Remus, and the side you were on was reflective of whether you were mainly experiencing Alien or Aliens. When they're in the beginning of the movie they're on Romulus. They utlimately are being hunted by a single Alien while trapped on that side of the station. Once they escape Romulus and get into Remus, that's their action movie where they have to blast their way out while the entire hive is coming after them. Rain thinks she escapes, only to end up with a final confrontation before she is actually free. I thought that was a cool way to physically split up the story.

Not perfect but I enjoyed it for what it was.

My girls went out for a concert last night, so I had the evening to myself. Went to see Alien Romulus again. I enjoyed it at least as much as when I saw it opening night, and don't really have much to add that I have already said about it.

But I did wonder if there was an attempt at evoking memories of another famous critter movie with the line the lead actress said at the end: DIE MOTHER F******!? Probably not, but the use of MF made me think of Arnold telling the Predator - you're one ugly mother f*****.

I remain in the camp of not liking the human-alien hybrid, but damn was that thing nauseating to look at. Great design that made me think an Engineer from Prometheus had a baby with Voldermort. That entire sequence was done well (much better than the effort in Alien Resurrection), and fits in line with one of the earliest desired outcomes in these movies - to make people uncomfortable at the least. The idea of the chest-burster in a male character meaning the dude has "given birth" is not one most men (tu betas notwithstanding) will be comfortable with. This thing seeking its mother in AR, ewwwh.

I believe Hudson says the line in Aliens, but I could be wrong.

Side note: I really enjoyed the zero-gravity acid scene.

That was a cool scene.

I also liked when she's in her space suit in that sand/gravel pit and opens the airlock. Sound goes silent except for what she can hear hitting her suit. Thought that was a cool detail.

Yeah, it was. I noticed that at the beginning with the first ship we see as well. Very 2001-ish.

Is it true that the third act was ridiculous (that's Critical Drinker's summation)?

Aliens is my favorite movie. I saw it when I was 12 and have a flashbulb memory of the theater, where I was sitting, and someone saying "peekaboo" when Hicks pops his head above the ceiling grate.

It was as memorable as my very first movie, Star Wars.

Since then, I've since Aliens 3 (ugh) on release and Prometheus (I have not rewatched this, while probably watching Alien/Aliens once a year), with no interest for any of the other movies. In my mind there is Alien and Aliens and nothing else.

However, I have been following this thread (both threads actually) and see the general enjoyment with some sentiment similar to what the Critical Drinker has shared.

So, if I said the ending of Romulus as I'm hearing it would ruin the movie for me, my question is, again, was the third act that bad?

Anyone else think this would have made more sense taking place between 2&3? Sure the company knew way more than they were letting on in Aliens but the plan was for Burke to bring the xenomorph back so they could study them.

Also, has anyone else read Alien: Out of the Shadows written by Tim Lebbon? It takes place between 1&2 where a mining colony has discovered a nest of eggs and drones hatched from former non-humanoid inhabitants. At least that's what I remember. Thought it would have made a cool movie.

Yes

Exactly

They could have just went there and had a method to get the eggs that were in the ship.

But now with the way they did it, it messes up the storyline of Aliens. In Aliens everyone was in the dark besides Ripley. So all the events of Romulus were apparently unknown. Yeah, that makes sense.

I stated this earlier but they clearly made choices based on nostalgia and fan fare without the story making much sense with the previous movies.

It only messes up the Aliens storyline if you believe the Company executives would have shared this kind of information with the non-Ripley characters.

I saw this today. It was great.

I do agree they should have explained how there were face huggers a little bit better and also why the aliens gestation was so rapid.

The third act worked for me. I loved the twist.

The only thing that straight up didn't work for me was THE line. What a dumb decision to put that in.

So last night/this morning I rewatched Alien and Aliens. At the beginning of Aliens the company doesn't really believe Ripleys story. Then we later learn that Paul Risers character sent a message to the colonists to have them check out the supposed crash site on the chance it was true. Of course it was and you have to assume word was sent back to corporate. So when the colony went dark and the Marines were sent Paul Risers character would have been the only one on the ship who knew for sure the colonists had come into contact with the aliens.

I'd consider Burke to be a [lower-level] Company executive. But you are correct, Burke would have been the only one who knew the colonists had come into contact with the aliens. Ripley likely had her suspicions, but the rest of them thought they were going to liberate some juicy colonists' daughters from their virginity.

I actually liked the Ian Holms bit. Helped that I watched Alien again this morning.

The first sequence straight up felt out of the 80s. The pure silence in space was great and almost unnerving.

Fun movie, love the Fede wrote this while playing TLOU and made Kay inspired by Dina. He cast Isabella Merced and then a year later she got cast for Season 2. There were several callouts to TLOU2 including the name of the mining colony.

Really well done and suspenseful, really good cinematography. The hybrid was horrifyingly weird and almost out of place but it worked for me

So you are going with a company was able to cover up what a giant space station was doing and that nothing would even be exposed by any of those or their family? Or that same company who built a giant space station and committed it to the investigation. Would just let it be out in space and floating on its own.

And double down with that same company being totally clueless when Riley is found and nothing leaking to anyone higher up that clearly would have known about the Romulus events.

Great fun film. The way the story was done just does not match the timeline. And that is OK. It does not work there. So be it.

I've suggested that the lack of recorded evidence on any of these events throughout these movies is a big WTF for me? Even today, we have systems that will audit trail everything entered. Yet this is not the case for the Weyland-Yutani Corporation? I seriously doubt that. But a company with the power they apparently can wield would have the power to keep news of these events from ever seeing the light of day. Do you think that a company with the ability to send a starship to investigate a mysterious signal, with zero regard to the crew's safety, could not also prevent anyone on that outpost who might have observed the break-up of the space station, under threat of death, then I'm not sure what else to tell you. .

As for the Company being clueless when Ripley is found, obviously there would be some executives with full knowledge. That doesn't mean they disseminate that information down the line.

Am I making suppositions? Absolutely. There is nothing in any of the known stories of Alien or Aliens, Alien Isolation, and now Alien Romulus, that speaks to these suppositions. These suppositions just come from an understanding of how powerful entities can be known to operate.

Just finished it. Loved it in the beginning and the longer the movie played the more I disliked it.

Fit and feel was great, taking us back to the feel of Alien 1&2.

Then I just realized they remade Alien in a slightly different setting. The one thing I highly dislike is the growth rate of the Alien. It's insanely too fast. The hybrid at the end just made me laugh, it was so dumb.

I really enjoyed where Promethus and Covenant was going and am bummed it wasn't written as a trilogy. Why? Because it was original.

In the end, this is a remade Alien and so much was just lifted, including the ending. B+.

I'll watch it again at home for sure. Great parts was all the face huggers chasing them, the OG xenomorph. I liked it's metamorphosis pod. Didn't make a whole lot of sense there were multiple just sort of chilling if they were already there. All the updated visuals were great. And it was very suspenseful. Didn't love the plot the longer it went on.

I think I read that Weyland-Yutani was successful in getting Sarbanes Oxley repealed in the early 2100's right around the time of the events in Alien.

Lots of tap dancing there

Let's go with all that you said as a possibility.

Well you missed the big hole in everything that I also already mentioned. Why were they not sending teams to get those viles on their own and just leaving everything out there floating? I mean if they have all that power and means, they would be doing everything they could to get it. Not, well we tried, darn it, time to let all go.

Just saw today. Film was great except for the ending. We deserved better than a cookie cutter ripoff of the human/alien hybrid.

Felt like the force awakens being a total clone of a new hope.
