Devoid of any thematic depth, it incorporates so many winks, nods, and moments of fan service it often feels more like a greatest hits entry than trying to provide anything new or profound.
I was worried about this.... hope it isn't as bad as this guy is making it out to be.

Hmmm. There is enough divergence in those opinions to make me wonder.

But, it has the word Alien in the title. I hope to enjoy it. Friday evening.

That said, now that actual reviews are dropping (as opposed to Twitter reactions, which were allowed to drop earlier), A) I'm also seeing more voices saying the movie isn't really about anything, and B) I'm getting more of a slight hint of what the third act entails, and it does sound pretty divisive. We shall see...

Previews seem to convey there's not a whole lot of a story, just a hunt-and-seek.

Somebody tell me, has there been a good Alien movie since Aliens? I tried with part 3 back in the day but just couldn't do it, and have been somewhat checked out since. I think I saw Prometheus, but couldn't tell you what it was actually about.

Yeah, that's the impression I'm getting. Which seems to be more than enough for most people. While for others it sounds like they were hoping for a bit more story, more thematic elements, etc, like in the first two.

Prometheus and Covenant certainly have their strengths, but they're both far more interested in David's story (the android played by Michael Fassbender) than being tried-and-true "haunted house" Alien movies.

I'm curious to give 3 a chance again, since it's from David Fincher (one of my favorite directors/it was his first movie), and I'm also seeing more and more people saying "Actually, it's pretty good" as of late, with everyone doing rewatches in the lead up to Romulus.

I always enjoyed 3. Charles Dutton was great. I feel like it mostly suffered from following one of the all time sequels ever. It was not near the level of 1 or 2, but that's a bar no one achieves

i've seen a lot of people defending it as well and that's foreign to me because it's awful from my memory.

agreed with loving Fincher, but from my understanding, he was handed a pile of poop.

Isn't there a rumored directors cut of 3 or the like? I thought I read somewhere it was actually a much more coherent story but got cut to *****

Yeah, even he hates the movie, was completely screwed over by Fox, etc. I mainly want to rewatch it for the visuals, but also without any pressure/expectations this go around.

I feel like it's just about time for me, Cinco Ranch and Spilner to rally and start defending Prometheus.

I do think one initial turnoff was how they handled Hicks and Newt after all the events of Aliens. It was a bit "Luke throwing the light saber over his shoulder"ish.

Defend it all you want. I'll give you that it looks incredible and has some great ideas/sequences, but none of it makes up for how objectively stupid the characters act, to the point of damn near ruining the entire thing.

I don't remember which one it was, but the "hey, all our friends just got murdered, let's F in the shower". It was like Alien meets Porky's

Ha, that was Covenant. Which I still maintain is better than Prometheus.

How do you get a movie like that as your first director job? Tv or something first?

He was a huge commercial and music video director in the late '80s/early '90s. Like, maybe the best ever to do both...

Prometheus is a good movie. And it's actually "about" something. Alien is a damn good movie, but it's not about much except a monster killing everyone.

Prometheus is cool but the characters are legitimately ******ed. How tf did those people become qualified to fly a space ship or operate any of the onboard machinery.

Alien 3 isn't that bad IMO, but when you have to follow Alien and Aliens it's an uphill battle. Charles S. Dutton and Charles Dance were good in their roles. The setting of a prison planet I thought was a good change as well. I saw it when I was a kid, not knowing anything about David Fincher. Watching it now as a David Fincher fan you can see a lot of him in there visually and appreciate that.

That being said, there's significant issues with the plot, but that is more likely on the writers and studio than Fincher. Newt and Hicks were just DOA when they landed. Ripley was impregnated by a face hugger at some unknown point in time. But Bishop who was torn apart somehow is aware that on the same pod that crashed there's a face hugger, and the company knows as well. Even though early in his career that seems way too sloppy for Fincher to have been on board with. Fincher doesn't even claim this movie because it didn't become what he believed he was going to be able to make, it got turned into something else.

I haven't seen Alien 3. But I've seen most of all the others. The first was great. The new releases have been good and frankly I enjoyed the Alien v Predator stuff. I also found Aliens to be a detour from the feel of the other movies. To me it was just 80s blockbuster action crap.
There was this one time at ban camp…

Prometheus tells probably the most interesting story of all of these movies. The idea of where humanity came from, outside of religious connotations, was its most compelling point. The movie - like all Ridley Scott movies - is designed, lighted, and shot to beautiful perfection. David the android is one of the most evil characters ever pit to film, especially when evaluating the character over the course of his two films. I sympathized with Shaw, and I liked Weyland even though the actor seemed wasted under all those prosthetics. I loved Idris Elba in this movie.

Many of the other characters were utter dumbasses. The geologist and biologist dudes - they were clowns, not scientists. Vickers was okay until she was running in a straight line under that crashing derelict.

One of the biggest problems is more with the audience expectations for the movie billed as an Alien prequel. People wanted a xenomorph or 30, and they didn't get that. They largely didn't give the story a chance.

It's not a perfect movie, but overall it is a better film than many suggest.

The part where the two scientists split from the rest of the crew and get lost and then find themselves in the room with all of the cylinders and decide to hangout there is insane. One of the dumbest things ever.

Prometheus's two biggest sins, IMO, were 1) hiring Guy Pearce for a prequel promo video and then slathering him with unconvincing old man makeup for the actual film, and 2) the scene where they finally come face to face with the big white Promethean, and he just… goes berserk and starts killing people.

What a letdown.
