I tip my cap to whoever in marketing came up with that idea. As a kid who grew up in the 80s seeing the Aliens VHS at the video store all the time, but being too young to see it, I totally appreciate the effort. The story was cool too, they turned this idea into a scavenger hunt. Someone had to put in the effort to get to see it, and I can only imagine how cool the payoff was when they got to watch.

One small criticism on the VHS box. Based on the trailers and some speculation I've read online, this movie will show an adult xenomorph emerging from a cocoon. If the VHS cover featured the cocoon, like the egg on the Aliens VHS box, it would have been next level.

Also, I finally saw the latest trailer on the big screen tonight, and it looked incredible.

Bought our tickets earlier today too.

Can't wait.
Bought my tickets yesterday. Ran the idea of the movie by my daughter to ensure she actually wanted to see it - she was lukewarm until I showed her the trailer. She lit up with the name of the director and his previous directorial credits. She loves modern horror movies. I told her that I've never considered the Alien movies as horror movies, but as science fiction movies with horror elements. Maybe an unnecessary distinction, but aside from the alien life, I don't see anything portrayed in these movies that I'd deem unlikely to ever be possible.

But I go into Alien Romulus with the expectation that I can never be surprised by a movie such as this again. I was 12 when the original movie came out; I recall knowing only that it was a monster movie, but my thinking at the time was a monster more akin to Godzilla than to The Thing (1951 movie). The movie was, and remains, the scariest movie I have ever seen. It has wreaked havoc on my dreams for years. It also led me to making one of the worst financial decisions I've ever made, purchasing a laser disc player just so I could buy the box set of this movie with all kinds of unreleased footage included. Had I waited just a few years, all of that footage was going to be available on a cheaper and better medium, the DVD. Now I'm sitting here with roughly $6000 worth of laser discs bought between 1994 and 1998 for, on average, $40 a pop. If only I could go back in time, I'd go back and kick younger me's ass.

Some thoughts on the trailer for this new movie - the actress Cailee Spaeny has stated the movie is set between Alien and Aliens. The trailer shows a couple of things that make me think this is far closer to Aliens, which if anyone recalls, was actually set 57 years after Alien. There is an atmosphere processor in the scene where they are leaving the planet. In the interrogation sequence of Aliens, Ripley appears to be unaware of the terraforming process when the CEO dude explains the process to her as to why no "hostile organisms" had been observed on LV-426. That makes me think the atmosphere processor was not known technology during the time of Alien but came about while Ripley was in hypersleep for all those years.

The planet they are leaving does bear a little resemblance to LV-426, but I doubt it's the same planet. I think Prometheus and Alien Covenant did a good job of putting the idea that the engineers seeded various planets with xenomorphs, so that could be an explanation for why there are xenomorphs on some other planet than what we originally saw in the first two movies.

In another scene there is someone carrying a pulse rifle. These certainly could have existed during the time frame of Alien (it's just a rifle with a grenade launcher installed).

Just in case people don't want to be spoiled by the exact timeline.

The film, which is the seventh main entry into the franchise, will take place between the events of Alien and Aliens. To be precise, Alien: Romulus is set 20 years after the first film, and 37 years before the James Cameron-directed sequel.

There are some wonderful and hilarious analysis videos about prometheus on YouTube and it will really step your hatred of that movie up a notch, I know it did for me.
As a kid that grew up on a ranch around guns, livestock, wild animals, heavy equipment, etc. Prometheus was like watching a group from the suburbs go on a 10 day hiking trip in the back country of Glacier National, and yes they fed the bears.

That's one of the potentially interesting things about the timeline. In Alien Ash is programmed to keep the xenomorph alive, all the humans are expendable. In Aliens Bishop is programmed to not harm human life. I'm guessing there's an android in this crew, and if that's the case when do we find out which kind of programming he has?

Well, she is an actress. In real life, she's a rabid anti-gun nut who didn't even want to do this movie due to the presence of guns.

Absolutely false.

Prometheus is much better.
In lieu of a pissing contest here, I will just say it is possible to consider both Prometheus and Alien Covenant to be entertaining and worthwhile entries to this series.

Alien Resurrection, on the other hand …

I just rewatched Alien Covenant on Hulu and enjoyed it more this time. Can't wait for the new one.

The black guy in the preview is clearly the android.

The only thing I don't like about that trailer is it seems to be giving away a number of characters' demise.

The original Alien showed nothing like that in any way, shape, or form. I figure most folks watching that one for the first time presumed Tom Skerritt's character, Dallas, would be the survivor but there was no hint of who might die given away through trailers.

When they show these types of movies on Alien planets the twist is that the human impregnates the face hugger.

This looks awesome but I will have to agree that we seem to see the demise of essentially 80% of the cast in the trailer.

That's usually not a good sign when the trailer gives too much away.

I'm not sure the trailer gave too much away. Going into this thing, I was already expecting most, if not all, of these characters to die.

Which Alien movie has less than 80% surviving anyway?

Sea Speed

Of course I expect them to die, I don't want to see how in the trailer. This will be a rare theatre watch for me regardless granted I'm not away at work.

None. But I'm thinking back to 1979 when I went into the theater in Sugar Land, TX, with nary a clue as to which of the characters in the original movie would die. To know that Ripley would ultimately emerge as the sole survivor would have all but ruined the movie. That's my complaint with this trailer. It's not surprising that the majority will die, but I'd just prefer to not know which will before seeing the movie.

I mean, based on the past two trailers, along with the casting in general, it's obvious that Cailee Spaeny is the lead. It's her story, her arc, she's the one looking for "a ticket out," etc. And a staple of the franchise, in movie after movie, is that damn everyone but the lead dies by the end. So, in that sense, I don't think they're showing too much at all. That's the conceit. It's a feature, not a bug.

Now what would really throw me for a loop is she dies.

My 45 year recollection on whatever night in June 1979 when I first saw Alien was that Tom Skerritt was the lead, and therefore would survive. So in a sense, it was a mis-direction when it was Sigourney Weaver who lived. She was a no-name at the time, with Alien either being her first or second movie, definitely her first where she was a major character. I can't say I know who this actress is, but I have heard of her from something else. Doesn't mean she has to be the one who lives, though.

And there could be a reason why the trailer is constructed like it is. Maybe there's something to the plot that renders the death reveals in the trailer as a non spoiler.

And I'd be fine with that.

It could certainly be a fun misdirect if she's killed. That said, it's clear she's still either the last one standing, or second (or so) to last, thus, given how these movies work, we already know everyone else is a goner. Unless there's some crazy surprise, of course.

As for Spaeny, she was most recently the junior photographer/one of three leads in Civil War a couple months back, and before that she played the title character in Priscilla, the Sofia Coppola Elvis movie from last December. She's also done some TV stuff here and there, but is a big star on the rise.

For those that are concerned that the trailers have given too much away I would recommend checking out Evil Dead or Don't Breathe from Fede Alvarez. The guy knows how to build an atmosphere of tension and dread as well as anyone out there. Something that none of the other films in the Alien franchise have done like the original. Aliens is my favorite of the series but it's a very different type of film than Alien, which is sci-fi horror. Trailers are meant to get you talking and in the door, all the trailers for this film have been solid, especially the last one. Even if this sticks with the standard final girl trope, which is what we're expecting, the ride on the way there will be a lot of fun. I would be willing to gamble that for everything that's in the trailer there's a lot more that's only going to be discovered in the theater.

That's where I know her from, Civil war.

I may be ragging on this trailer, but that is only because I consider the trailer for Alien to be the best ever crafted. Still, this movie has had some good trailers in its own right. I already have opening night tickets. And will probably see it a second time if my schedule allows for it.
