Not rolling through this thread because SPOILERZ and all, but I stumbled across this show after years of it getting recommended to me.

Started watching it over the weekend and absolutely love it.

As a very religious dude, I was scared McBride would put Christianity in his crosshairs. I didn't find that to be the case at all. In fact, I've found it's probably even funnier who grew up in a mega church environment.
They don't make a joke of Christianity or the parishioners. Jesse, Judy, Kelvin, and Uncle Baby Billy are the jokes. I think they smartly made Eli very different than the rest of them, which is why the show works for me. It's a very different show if Eli is the same as his kids and Billy. I'm not a religious person, but if the head of the church is a scumbag like his kids I don't think I would have liked it nearly as much. Even when they show Eli making mistakes it's not due to the same kinds of motivations that his kids share.

Agreed. I've always liked how sincere Eli and Amy Lee were about the church and preaching. It makes the kids that much funnier with how horrible they are. S3 has been so great in that regard

The Y2K thing? Hell they got caught up in government hype. I remember that scare. Worked but nothing burger…world wide. Something eventually would work.

I agree… but it would be comedy gold or jumping the shark if we had a scene of Eli play helicopter with his wife.

Confession time, I just started watching this show as of last week and I'm addicted. I know it's been around but for whatever reason I just never checked it out, I have no excuses.

I love the whole dynamic of the family, especially how Goodman is such a stark contrast to all three of his lunatic children. I don't know how anyone keeps it together on set with the three of them trying to out-crazy each other. But even the three of them can't get to the level of ridiculousness that is easily the best and most ridiculous character on the show, Baby Billy. I've enjoyed Walton Goggins since The Shield. It's really insane that the same man who portrayed Boyd Crowder is also responsible for Baby Billy, bravo to him. Baby Billy has worked his way into my pantheon of all-time favorite TV characters, he takes the show up a notch every time he's in a scene.

I just finished up season 2 and I'll get into season 3 tonight.

So far this is my favorite scene in the two seasons I've watched, I laughed so hard my wife didn't know what the hell I was watching.

FINALLY saw the entire season last weekend.

Walton Goggins is a MASSIVE TALENT who doesn't get the credit he deserves

he can play insane drama like in "Six" where he was a SEAL commander

and be funny as @#$@#$ in Vice Principals and Gemstones.

Oh.. never saw Justified. Or the Wire!

Even though I live only 30 miles from Baltimore

I just remember in SIX Goggins was being tortured and it was like "holy @#$@#$ that's really happening" it was the most intense thing I have seen on TV

Walton Goggins was the hidden gem of The Shield, overshadowed by Chiklis but a phenomenal combination of hilarious and tragic. Especially when stuff went south with Lemonhead and in the last season.

The scene where Baby Billy pushes the stroller under the stairs and tells his kid to stop crying because no one wants to kidnap him still slays me.

I actually liked Vice Principals more because of the cliffhanger nature of what was going to happen next

it was also amazing the relationship between Patterson/McBride/Goggins

I watched them out of order (RG first, Vice Principals concurrently after RG started, and then Eastbound and Down last month), so this may be a Citizen Kane type argument, but my ranking is:

1) Righteous Gemstones
2) Vice Principals
3) Eastbound and Down

Eastbound and gemstones in a tie for one. Vice principals at 3.

Eastbound & Down is just pure, uncut Danny McBride. While its great, and hilarious, Gemstones has a ton of fantastic characters and is just a better show all around imo. Haven't watched VP.

I wouldn't be at all surprised by anybody ranking Eastbound & Down above Righteous Gemstone though.

Either way... you can't go wrong.

We are rewatching Eastbound and Down as well as Vice Principals concurrently as we finished Gemstones. VP is holding up better, but E and D is still funny as hell.

I'd put the Gemstones neck and neck with Arrested Development as the greatest ensemble cast in a comedy in my lifetime.

EB&D falls off a cliff imo after a couple seasons. Virtually unwatchable at times. VP was wild. Fantastic 2 seasons of TV

I know I posted earlier... We just got to season 3 of EB&D... I'm laughing because I'm a new parent so his antics are funny with Toby... but otherwise it's just awful.

First two seasons were greatness.

My sister and her husband just landed in Charleston for vacation, and Skyler Gisondo, aka Gideon Gemstone, was on their flight. They chatted him up for a second, he told them he's there to film season four, and they said he could not have been nicer.

(Gisondo is also currently shooting the new Superman, in which he's playing Jimmy Olsen. Dude is busy.)

So, in your expert Hollywood opinion, if they're filming now then when should we expect Season 4? (Unless I'm an idiot and they've already announced it).

P.S. Hopefully Bidenomics or being woke doesn't doom it!

They haven't announced it yet, but it depends on when filming started/how far along they are. The latest any HBO series debuts in any given year is October, and I don't see it premiering by then, unless they're somehow almost done (given the fact that season three debuted roughly six months after filming was complete). I think they're relatively early into filming, though, so a January premiere feels more likely to me, if not next March/April.

Righteous Casting - As has been rumored on Reddit and by the local press down in South Carolina, I'm told that Bradley Cooper spent a portion of his summer filming Season 4 of HBO's The Righteous Gemstones. This tipster reached out in response to my theory that James Gunn would ask one of his Guardians of the Galaxy stars - either Chris Pratt or Cooper - to play Jor-El in Superman. They pointed out that Pratt was busy filming Timur Berkmambetov's AI thriller Mercy all summer, while The Hangover's Cooper got back to his comedy roots with a supporting turn on Gemstones. As a career move, it makes sense, as he probably needed to lighten up a bit after A Star Is Born, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, and Maestro. HBO had no comment regarding Cooper's casting, but if this turns out to be the final season of The Righteous Gemstones a show I adore, and which has only improved from one season to the next - it makes sense that Danny McBride and Co. would want to go out with a bang. Side note… if you haven't seen Cooper in the goofy 2012 comedy Hit & Run, you should. It's one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies.
