They don't make a joke of Christianity or the parishioners. Jesse, Judy, Kelvin, and Uncle Baby Billy are the jokes. I think they smartly made Eli very different than the rest of them, which is why the show works for me. It's a very different show if Eli is the same as his kids and Billy. I'm not a religious person, but if the head of the church is a scumbag like his kids I don't think I would have liked it nearly as much. Even when they show Eli making mistakes it's not due to the same kinds of motivations that his kids share.BassCowboy33 said:
Not rolling through this thread because SPOILERZ and all, but I stumbled across this show after years of it getting recommended to me.
Started watching it over the weekend and absolutely love it.
As a very religious dude, I was scared McBride would put Christianity in his crosshairs. I didn't find that to be the case at all. In fact, I've found it's probably even funnier who grew up in a mega church environment.
