I liked the first three episodes. The Sauron flashback was really good. His black spaghetti mode was supposed to take centuries to reform. It shows how many storylines they have going that it took three episodes to catch back up with Numenor, Isuldur, Sauron, the elves, and the Stranger.

I thought they captured Tom Bombadil really well.

I know people will always nitpick and complain, but it is fun to be back in Middle Earth. They have really nailed the look and feel of this show. Even if some of the small details may go against lore or people's perceptions of Tolkien's work.

Finished ep3, lots of great stuff!

Seeing the make up orcs vs CGI of the Hobbit makes me disappointed at the Hobbit once again.

Liked the Tom character more than the actual book character.

Great point you and a couple others have made. This is visually a pretty good show, especially when you compare it to the Hobbit.

That bar is so low it's not even a trip hazard

OK. Just finished episode 4, so I'm all caught up now. The start of football season and the attendant fantasy football drafts, etc., delayed this process a bit.

I'm actually enjoying it more than i expected to! It is visually pretty well done, and the acting of the principle characters seems to be a bit better. If you squint a bit, most of the story arcs align a bit better with the books, or at least seem headed that way.

I guess I'd - consciously or not - lowered the bar for this season, but it's exceeded whatever expectations I'd had. Can't wait to see the next 4 episodes!

One thing I've got to nitpick, though, is the continuation and sometimes escalation of the Elrond/Galadriel beef. From my recollection, there isn't a HINT of this in any of the books, and I'm wondering why so much time is wasted on it here.

Seeing how in the book canon, Galadriel is his M-I-L (and also great-great-aunt), I'll give him some grace on things. Have they touched on the convoluted Noldoran family tree in this series?

Narvi the Delve Master is such a cool title. His name is on Durin's Door from Fellowship. The full inscription Gandalf reads is "The Doors of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak, friend, and enter. I, Narvi, made them. Celebrimbor of Hollin drew these signs."

How are they doing the dwarves in this show? is it forced perspective? They look great, way better than some CGI dwarves in other movies.

I love how they give Numenor the look of Gondor. It has the long overhang like Gondor's design, and of course the white tree at the top of Numenor like Gondor. The tree in Gondor was grown from seeds and a sapling from the Numenor tree by Isildur.

Is there a hint of romance between the Numenor former queen and Elendil?

It's really fun to watch Sauron/Annatar seduce and manipulate Celebrimbor and the other elves. The actor is doing very well in that role.

Definitely some hints of romance, there. I imagine the show feels it needs some.

Yeah I was hoping Alister would slice him.

I thought lore was that dwarves were resistant to the rings? Am I remembering incorrectly as he sure is all in on the rings now!

I think in Appendix F there is something about the Dwarves being generally hard to turn fully evil, and that very few actually served Sauron, but that the rings did make them extremely greedy.

The show is playing fast and lost with the passage of time. We see that a lot with travel time between locations and the dwarves being seduced by the power of the rings taking decades in lore vs much faster in the show.

Just watched this week's episode and thoroughly enjoyed it. Show may be hitting its stride? Haven't had any stupid artsy slow mo montages so that's a plus over last season.

My one knock against this episode was what you brought up, the passage of time. Durin was basically teleporting in this episode it felt like. Even though with implied travel this episode spanned a lot longer time, it still felt a little off.

That seems like a leap based on the current dialogue and impetuous delving.

There's something under the mines. Disa heard it herself. A nameless evil, ancient and powerful. You mustn't dig.

I'm thinking one or more of the sackville bagginses.

Sauron is a lot more charismatic as an attractive elf than a flaming evil eye.

"It began with the forging of the Great Rings. Three were given to the Elves, immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Seven to the Dwarf-Lords, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls. And nine, nine rings were gifted to the race of Men, who above all else desire power. For within these ring was bound the strength and the will to govern each race. But they were all of them deceived,"

After 23+ years of hearing this, it's nice to see it in live action. I think Amazon is doing a great job depicting how Sauron did all this. I applaud them.

I suppose it could still be Saruman, especially if he decides "f- these hobbits" to go tree shopping. I don't know how I feel about 1) Bombadil using that famous line about life and death, or 2) this wizard not being Gandalf after it's all said and done.

I am quite bored with Galadriel at the moment.

Yeah, I guess the show has set it up that Sauron is the ultimate evil, bad for everyone... but the orcs were already killing/torturing all the humans they found in season 1. So it's just another instance of them only motivated for their own desires. They don't give a crap about anyone else.

On the flip side, it's unlikely they would have ever gone against Sauron's wishes, other than desertion in the face of certain death.
