Also, I get why Sheridan started the show in FW but Texas is kind of out of the way from TN to Oregon. Memphis->FW->Boseman is about 300 miles longer than Memphis ->St Louis->Boseman

Might just be the availability of land to stake a claim to. If you're living in post reconstruction Tennessee and don't own a big chunk of land to farm/ranch, the prospect of being able to lay claim to a large piece of land in a fertile western state for basically the cost of getting there would probably be fairly appealing. Probably mostly middle class (for the time) folks that don't have much going for them in Tennessee but have the resources to travel to try to find a better life for themselves.

I'll add that His sister called him a dreamer. I often think about the folks taking that risk as dreamers. You'd have to be a dreamer to go against the odds. Something better.

Did James actually have a location he was reaching out just a general direction? I thought he was vague on the where, just wanted the right spot.

i had that same thought but ignored it then. But I just looked into it a litte

I don't know how educated she was per se but it seems possible she knew.

Research i found shows they new about super novas as early as 185 AD. And in the 1500s there was written documentation of the birth of new stars.

When anyone understood that they had a life cycle is a bit unclear but before 1850 is entirely possible. Where she would learn of it is also unclear of course. But possible.

Loved the show. I had high expectations given the subject matter and I would say those were met and exceeded.

My only nitpick -- and it's a small one -- is that the timing of Elsa's love affairs with Ennis and Sam seemed unrealistic and turned the middle section of the show into more of a romance than an honest look at the journey. In fact, Elsa's whole romance with Sam seemed forced; a too-easy plot device to showcase the native way of life more and keep them from always being bad guys.

I realize she was the central figure in the show, but the focus on her love life turned attention away from the struggles of the wagon train and the immigrants -- which had made the first few episodes so powerful.

Agree completely. I thought that they actually did a good job with the first boyfriend… only to turn around and have her feel the same way about another dude shortly thereafter. I think it's a legit gripe. I also thought the show was pretty good overall despite some iffy stuff.
my wife and i both commented wow that was quick when she fell in love with Sam. i think they did a poor job giving us a timeline. maybe it got cut in editing. we'll never know.
I think this is the main problem. It took half the season for them to get out of Texas and then before you know it, they're in Wyoming. I get that it would be fairly boring to show them going through the plains without much going on, but I think they should've done a little better at conveying how much time had passed.
From Ft worth to Texline is 500 miles, from Texline to Denver is 300 miles, from Denver to Bozeman is 700 miles.

Getting started is infinitely harder, Traveling with 75 people is infinitely harder, crossing rivers is infinitely harder.

When your down to 3 wagons vs. 25, you tend to move 3X faster.

The only thing I didn't really like about the ending was that the voiceover didn't stop after Elsa passed.

It was my understanding or interpretation that she was reading from a journal or memoir. So to keep her voiceover going after she passed was a bit odd.

"Yes, I am dead now. As dead as the hopes and dreams of so many of us that embarked on this life's journey across this beautiful but cruel landscape. As eaten by the worms now as those unfortunate's whose graves we passed by in the unending desolation that is the prairie. As moldy as the crust of bread too long sequestered in the cook's pants during a long Wyoming rainstorm. No longer will I offer myself up almost indiscriminately to those I find along the trail for, as I said earlier, I am dead now."

Fabulous show and the amount of nitpicking and complaining is astounding to me.

For the fans of Isabell I recommend watching her performance in "Run Hide Fight" if you've ever spent time in a school it is absolutely gut wrenching. Great movie though and she does a very good job in it.

Thought this was going to be about him firing a gun in Ep 1 that wasn't invented until 1885 even though this is 1883.

Quote:

"Yellowstone" prequel "1883" has been renewed for additional episodes at Paramount Plus, and the ViacomCBS-owned streaming service has ordered another Taylor Sheridan-created origin-story show following the Dutton Family called "1932." Yes, you guessed it the show will follow a new generation of Duttons "during the time of western expansion, Prohibition and the Great Depression."

I eagerly await the announcement of "1972", which details the Dutton family war against the hippies and anti-war protesters in Montana.

Again, the show hasn't taken any sort of new "direction". The show has been about Elsa from the very beginning...

The last two episodes have been nearly 100% teenage girl fantasy romance. The tv show went from a Western to a young adult coming of age story where her coming of age is acting like a petulant child and sleeping with everything that moves. I guess this is what coming of age means in the Tik Tok and Instagram era where the only thing that is important is sexuality.

Typically coming of age stories involve someone has immense hardships where they learn how to take responsibility and act like an adult. These may involve romance but more often than not the romance is secondary in comparison to the teenager taking the lead on family issues and realizing their own greatness through action. This so far has been exactly the opposite of a coming of age story because she has regressed in responsibility and maturity and appears to only care about herself and her next sexual conquest.

It's now a major drain upon the story and is ruining the whole plot line of getting the Duttons to Montana.

I love this era of morality where sleeping with a total of two people is 'sleeping with everything that moves'. Some of y'all can control your propensity to judge others, even when you're watching a fictional series on television.

Margaret said she was 17 and pregnant with Elsa when James was off fighting, so she was born in 1848 and had Elsa in 1865. The family tree repeatedly posted on here is inaccurate.

James and Margaret are John III's great-grandmother and grandfather, so if John is the first generation, seven generations would be Tate's grandson.

John III makes a comment about "Yellowstone being in his family for seven generations" but 1) that is impossible because even if we count James as first it makes Tate sixth generation and 2) my working assumption is Spotted Eagle meant 'seven generations from now', which means the first generation is John and Tate is the fifth generation. Hence, Tate's son is the sixth and grandson is the seventh.

So "2153: Spotted Eagle's Prophecy" is when we see the land reclaimed.

You have to love how Sheridan says in Yellowstone "I want to be Sam Elliott when I grow up" and then features him in 1883.

I have very mixed feelings about this show. I saw the first two episodes while flying and absolutely loved them, deciding to purchase the season on Amazon when I got home.

As far as being a coming of age story with Elsa at the center, that is I think a good concept for the series. It was very satisfying to see Elsa shoot Ennis' killer, the sort of vengeful scene which I think is Sheridan's hallmark. However, the whole coming of age saga progressed too quickly. The series sort of lost me when she became Elsa, Cheyenne Princess Warrior.

And I probably enjoyed it a little too much when Claire shot herself. But again, that happening with a deliberately unlikable character is another Sheridan trademark. I almost think they should have treated her like Kenny from "South Park". Mysteriously bring her back to life each week, only to die yet another miserable frontier death.
