I'd agree but I also remember the Crow Indian telling James that in 7 generations his people will come back for the land and James said "In 7 generations they can have it."

(1) Things change. (2) My guess is that passing comment never becomes part of the family's oral tradition. Be a little weird if four or five generations of Duttons compiled this enormous ranch, all the while reminding themselves that they will just give it back if the Indians who were there first ask for it because their great, great, great granddaddy said they would.
And I'll also add that I think the comment was more a reflection of the times. What happens 100+ years from now is the last thing he was worried about while trying to keep his family alive in the wilderness.
